Every school has its own mission. This is an outstanding conference academically.
And I've posted this before, but a few years ago I tallied up the competitive federal research dollars from AAC schools, and they exceeded that of the Big 12 (just slightly behind on a per-school basis).

houston is harder to get into than 90 schools in front of them, has bigger endowment than 70 in front of them
a higher Carnegie classification than 70 schools in front of them (the leading college classifier)

i get that Houston has a shittty 4year and 6 year graduation rate but how can you weight it that much in a college ranking

not saying this is houston.. but if you had the best professor in the nation but he is hard and 30% of the students drop out because of that.. and you had the worst teacher in the nation but easy and 100% graduate is the second a better college/professor

i will never understand why that is weighed so heavily
That graduation rate over 6 years always will kill city schools. Dual missions as access schools and research universitiies. We feel the pain.

Didn't Florida's president once vote them on equal footing with the Ivies, and the rest of the Florida schools as "marginal"? USNWR's methodology certainly isn't perfect.
It's about audience. We forget that the audience for USNWR rankings is 17 year olds and gheir parents. Very different than Carnegie.

The rates are low because of the large part-time student population and the fact that UH provides an enormous service; providing many first generation college students access to a high quality degree. However, that means many drop in and out due to things like cost, lack of scholarship/grant money, and familial issues.

I went to Cornell for undergrad and UH for grad school. The only real differences between the two schools was the Cornell had tons of money to throw at kids and my UH classmates were MUCH more diverse and I am not just talking about race/ethnicity. In my second year of grad school, I found out one of my classmates was living in a women's shelter and was in her 6th year of a 2 year program because that is the only way she could do it. She was smarter than anyone I met at Cornell and 185 times smarter than I am.
We had a football player live in his car for a year as a walkon before finally getting a scholarship. He is now a GA and a double degreed be grad. His little brother just earned a scholly this Aug. It's a different and wide variety of student experiences than Emory or Tufts.

USNews has consistently ranked Texas Tech higher than UH while is is not as good academically. This occurs because "Peer Review" accounts for 22.5% of USNews National Universities ranking and TT has taken advantage. TT claims 27 AAU schools are its peers. TT is not an AAU school. Quick, what does TT have in common with Cal-Berkeley, University of Michigan, and University of Virginia? And what does that say about USNews?

It is one thing if you are a UCLA, where local students have other options close by to fulfill their academic needs, but for a Houston or even UCF, locals depend on those schools to provide them an education either part time or for those students who are battling to reach their dream of a diploma. If those schools become too selective, then they will be turning away locals who could gain an education and contribute to the local economy and push their children to pursue higher education. It's a tough deal as many think these rankings are the end all, but these rankings have become so screwed to private schools and flagships.

This same at argument was made when Cincinnati instituted minimum entrance standards. Instead of the main campus, less qualified were directed to the 2 2-year, open admissions branch campuses as well as Cincinnati State, where they could prove themselves worthy of the main campus. I see nothing wrong with that model.

The B12 is grossly skewed by UT. Take away them and it's mostly dismal.

Most major American cities have multiple options for college education. I'm sure Houston is no different.

I think that's what the majority of the urban metropolitan schools in the conference will eventually do.

Memphis probably isn't going to put minimum standards right now, but the free community college (Tennessee promise) should move a large number of underpreforming students into our community college (Southwest).

The problem is that the community college is already getting killed by the funding formula the state uses to determine budgets. Basically, your budget is set base on metrics like graduation rates, etc. Memphis only response is to up admission standards, otherwise they will lose money in 6 years. Southwest has no control over that, therefore there budget is getting cut every year no matter what.

I hope this Amazon relocation news gets city and state governments really thinking about infrastructure spending. There's a lot of major cites that need to look in the mirror and figure out that they need to invest in their metropolitan research universities. West Tennessee won't get a new Car plant or a big corporate relocation until the UofM hits Tier One status.

Memphis will start pushing hard for in the state legislature for funding to get to Tier 1 Carnegie status. The presentations have already be given to our board of directors, our new board is mostly members of our corporate community. It will be interesting on how that goes since FedEx is by far the biggest lobbyist in the State.
