I can personally attest to our local Mormon church in humble saving my aunt $15k in repairs/clean up of her home from hurricane Harvey.

She literally had human poop in her home that had come from the sewers backing up and they cleaned it up for free no questions asked.

They even removed all her furniture, damaged carpet and wood floors, as well as the sheet rock.

Then when they found out she forgot to get flood insurance on the new house, because she was taking care of my 91 year old grandmother, who recently had a stroke, they offered to donate to the go fund me page i was setting up for her.

They were really some of the greatest and most amazing people i have ever met.

There's a few. I'm sure there are more. You can also put in personal experiences I've had with my churches and communities following natural disasters and other tragedies.

Take note, I said "often times", not "always" in my original post. The stupid meme implies that thoughts and prayers are useless and tries to suggest that supplies and relief efforts are more needed even though the storm is ongoing in some places and direct physical help and supply shipments aren't necessarily possible yet.

Praying doesn't hurt, but action is required when appropriate. Just seems hypocritical to want someone's time and or money, but ridicule that same person's prayers and thoughts.

Just looking at those sources around 5-10% more religious people give than non-religious people. I wouldn't say that makes them the most generous or even a majority since you're probably looking at 55-45 or 60-40 at most. I agree though the meme really has no place here

Pull up a list of non-religious charitable organizations and compare to religious ones doing relief work around the world. Not even close.

I'm not a bible thumper but I have done relief work (disaster and persistent) around the world (Liberia, Haiti, Nigeria, Mali, Iraq, Afghanistan). Religious NGOs are there before, during and after and are honestly the best folks to work with from a humanitarian aid stand point. Your fly-by-night feel good folks who are normally non-religious pop-in, get a photo op and pop out, never to be seen again and are completely worthless on the ground as they have no history or situational awareness of true need in the area.

Just personnel, on the ground experience....
