Never Forget
9/11/01

I was in DC that day 23rd and M NW. The terrorism expert we had just hired, Jerry Paul Bremer, was all over the local news that day. He was the person who handed Iraq back to the Iraqis a few years later.

They handed us all water since they didn't know if the reservoirs were poisoned. We could only go out of DC. Only military, doctors and police were let in. Metro was shut down.

Remember finally making it home, seeing the wife, ordering UNO's pizza, picking it up and sitting and watching the coverage the rest of the night.

I worked for Marsh and a lot of my friends were in NY that day for a conference. Some were late and that saved their lives.

Some worked in the 95th floor, the one that was hit first. They didn't make it.

God bless all who run into danger and not from it.

16 years later, seems like yesterday.

What are your stories?

Just started my first job out of grad school. Didn't do much work after the news hit.

I was in 9th grade. First period was gym class and we were outside, so I didn't know anything about it until second period. I walked into my english class and the TV was on. I walked into that class just a few minutes after the second tower was hit.

We sat around the rest of the day watching the news, speculating who it was and whether our city might be a target. It seemed very surreal that day and it still does today when I think back on it.

My girlfriend's sister worked in a building across from the WTC. She was late to work that morning. Her building didn't collapse, but it was completely destroyed by the collapse of the towers.

RE: Never Forget
I remember talking to my grandmother when I was little and thinking that, after all the years that had passed, how amazing it was that she could remember exactly where she was and what she was doing when she got the news of the Pearl Harbor attack. I couldn't comprehend how something could become so engrained in one's memory.

I was in the 10th grade in Memphis and in 2nd period English when we got the news. We had just finished grading a pop quiz when the teacher's husband called her cell and told her to turn on the tv. School was cancelled and I spent the rest of the day and well into the night glued to the tv with my family. It was such a surreal experience and I can't believe it's been so long now since it happened.

I couldn't tell you much of anything else about the rest of my 10th grade year, but I can see those 1st few moments after we found out as clear as if it just happened.

I was getting ready for work when my wife told me a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. My initial thought was of a guy in a Cessna who got to close and the winds pushed him into the building. When I got to a TV I realized it was much worse. Then when the second plane hit I knew it was War.

Saudi Arabia government ‘funded dry run' for 9/11, legal documents claim
Two Saudi nationals and government employees tested flight deck security on internal flight.

The Saudi Arabian embassy in Washington DC may have funded a “dry run” of the 9/11 attacks, according to evidence submitted to an ongoing lawsuit against the Saudi government.

The famous actor James Woods claimed publicly that he was on a flight that he later determined was a dry run for a terrorist attack.

According to him, he reported it to the FBI and they dismissed the event.

About the same for me. I was in 9th grad also.

I was @ zero hour for marching band practice, when the planes hit the towers. 1st period was another band class. Our band director kept the TV off (After 9/11 he had it on from then on). During that time was when The Pentagon and plane crash in Pennsylvania occurred. In 2nd period I finally heard what had happened. Periods two through five were spent watching the news. Only my 6th period math teacher had us doing classwork. No homework that day.

My dad came and picked me up after school. I usually rode the bus. When we got home he put our American Flag out immediately. It would be washed several times over the following months, as it was flown daily.

RE: Never Forget
Is your flag out? I know that presenting our flag today is not official but who needs official for this occasion.

I remember that I was getting ready to head out to the city personnel for paperwork to retire. No one would answer the phone until I got this lady that was mad at me for not knowing what had happened. She said, "don't you know that we have been attacked?" and honestly I didn't. I turned on the tv and realized the horrendous act those camel jockeys perpetrated on our nation. I wanted to join the military that day but at 53 that was far fetched. Needless to say I had to wait for my retirement papers until days later.

Similar.

I was sitting at my desk, tv probably on Mike and Mike back when that was watchable/listenable. Wife was either on her way to work or had just gotten to her office when she called me and told me to turn on the news.

I flipped it over and was watching rather intently, within a few minutes plane two zooms into the picture and then this horrible sinking feeling. Then hearing the demise of Barbara Olsen who had been on TV as a commentator for years at that point, almost like someone you knew.

I grew up in NoVa., and one constant was the air traffic, we were in one of the flight paths for Reagan National. Weirdest thing was heading up there in the days or a week or two after to go to Mom's house. Not a plane in the sky. Was VERY noticeable as you headed up 95, was always a handful of jets overhead. This time, not a one. Really odd.

Never forget.

My Mother in law drove a few days later to have my wife help her in a paper she had for her degree.

We went to Monticello and Mt. Vernon the next few days. No planes overhead. Strange to experience those places as though we were in the 18th Century.

One plane flew overhead and people freaked out since there was a ground stop on all traffic.

RE: Never Forget
I was in my sophomore year of college in a history course when someone ran into the room, literally busted through the door and yelled "World Trade Center just got hit by a plane!"

Everyone scrambled to pack their notes and books and ran out of the class with the professor. We all gathered in a nearby large study room and watched in horror as the second plane hit. At that point the students from NYC were frantically trying to call relatives in NY, tears on many faces, anger setting in.

At that point, nobody cared who was conservative, liberal, black, asian, white, hispanic. We were all American and we were all angry. Inside all of us, we knew there would be a military response for this and nobody opposed it.

I agree, it feels like yesterday. Watching the small shadows fall from the towers from floors just above the smoke. Then watching the towers fall and people running through the streets.

Is this how people felt in 1957? Still wondering what causes a human to hate another so much to do something like this?

RE: Never Forget
I was getting ready to go on a guy's trip that afternoon with my Father, Brother-in-law and Nephew. Needless to say, the flight didn't take off. My wife was getting ready to go to work and had the Today show on when it happened. One of my best friends lived and worked very close to the twin towers. I tried to get ahold of him, but it was busy. Finally got ahold of his brother-in-law who had talked to him. He was at home in a conference call when the first plane flew so low over his building that it temporarily knocked out power and shook the building.

I was telling his brother-in-law my friend needed to get out of there. Before anyone was talking about the building falling, I was worried the buildings might fall and hit his place. I didn't know they pancaked. He said he needed to stay in place because there might be ground level terror. When he was in Vietnam, they would set off a bomb in a building and with everyone milling about outside, they would set off a bigger one outside where people had gathered.

Don't know if his building was one of the ones torn down or not, but it could not be occupied at least for months and he had to move elsewhere.

What happened in 1957 that you're referring to Coast Guard?

RE: Never Forget
I was driving into work in downtown Houston with my pregnant wife when we heard a live radio report of the 2nd plane crashing into the WTC. My wife works for a pretty prominent downtown Houston law firm (as a secretary) and they quickly dismissed her office because one of their clients is a member of the Bin Laden family and they had fears of an attack in downtown Houston.

Later that week, my company actually had a meeting in our New York offices just a few blocks from the WTC and we were on among the first flights that were flying when the air travel ban was lifted. Seeing the still smoldering wreckage along with all the signs looking for lost (and dead) friends and relatives was surreal. Our company's President killed himself a year after 9/11 - he was on the NYC streets when the planes struck and he was never the same. Neither was the company.

I was a 1st year in Ireland.

I remember finding out when we left school and got in my friend's mom's car. She was listening to it on the radio.

I'll never forget it.

That was 16 years after Pearl Harbor.

I was on a land surveying crew, staking out Brookhannah Court in Fuquay-Varina, NC. I remember my crew chief talking to the developer (a veteran) about what was going on. We were just in a state of shock thinking it was a bad accident until the 2nd plane hit.

It seems like this board has gotten "younger".
