OT: Where Were You on This Day 16 Years Ago
First, God Bless America and keep it and it's people, all it's people, safe!

On this day, and ironically, I was in a Continuity Planning/Disaster Recovery security meeting in down town Harrisburg, Pa. when I first heard of the terrorist attack. Walking through the normally vibrant Capitol city parking garage, but then empty at the time, gave an strange feeling to what was happening at that moment.

Finally getting to my car in the parking garage on the other end of the town, I spent 3 hours waiting to be able to get out of the garage to go home and find out more details what happened.

Any other stories to share?

At work. I went to the kitchen area to get some water and saw a lot of people watching the news of the plane crashing into the first tower.

Of course I stayed and watched from that point and I remember saying "There's another one" when the second plane was about to hit.

Jury duty. 'Evacuated' the Durham County courthouse around 9 or so.

I was very young. I was outside playing with my two corgis while my mom was gardening and my mom heard the news and we just kind of stood out there together in pure shock and silence, and sadness. my dad worked In NYC at the time. Luckily he wasn't harmed. I lived in CT at the time.

Freshman Level Chemistry in High School. Our teacher heard the announcement and looked at all of us and said words I'll always remember:

"Guys, the administration here just told us not to show you what's going on, but you deserve to, since this will change your lives forever." We stayed in that classroom until about noon that day...then they let us all out of school. Little did I know that two of my teachers had family in the towers (both ended up safe thankfully).

Sophomore year at Morehouse College. I was still sleeping when the first plane hit. When I woke up and turned on the TV it was all they were showing. I was watching live when the second plane hit. It was the most surreal day I can remember. All classes where cancelled but I took the drive to campus and it was the most somber and downbeat I'd ever seen it. All the NYC kids were in a near state of shock. God bless the victims and their families and God bless America.

I was on a land surveying crew, staking out Brookhannah Court in Fuquay-Varina, NC. I remember my crew chief talking to the developer (a veteran) about what was going on. We were just in a state of shock thinking it was a bad accident until the 2nd plane hit.

About a year before it happened, the office expanded the large break room with one TV, Headline News going 24/7. That was back when Headline News was "around the world in 30 minutes" *

Needless to say, nothing got done that day as large groups of people were huddled around the screen. Yes, I was one of them.

* Does anyone know when did Headline News ended that original format? I never ever watch it now as a result.

I was shaving, getting ready to go to school. This day changed the world for all of us. It caused me to join the military, and serve. My life would be significantly different had I not done that.

My freshman year at UH. Biology lab. TA dismissed us early without explanation. Walked back to the dorm and turned on the TV.

RE: OT: Where Were You on This Day 16 Years Ago
I was a senior in High School and part of the "AV Club". Being early in the year still, there were a bunch of students in the studio that wanted to be class president/secretary/etc. We were gonna do a practice run for all their 'speeches' ahead of the real thing later that week. As we got started, a classmate said that we needed some "fake news" so that we could practice the transition to the speeches. Just then the teacher walks in and says "the World Trade Center just blew up". As I recall it, my response was, "I guess that'll work".

It was unbelievable. We turned on the news in time to see the 2nd tower get hit. School didn't dismiss (small town north of Memphis, TN), but all we did was change classes and watch the news with a different classmates.

I was in band and we still had practice that day after school. We were near a Naval Air Station and while airliners were forced down, the occasional military aircraft flying over really got to some of us.

Running large work crew near a busy airport. All air travel ceased other than the occasional fighter jet. Very eeery.
About 4 hrs from DC. We heard it on a radio. Thought it was an accident until the second one hit. Project was shut down for 2 days because we were near a potential high value target. People were in shock.

Living in New York (Westchester).

Sitting in Ms. Maimone's 7th grade class, front left of the classroom. Teacher ran out of the room crying, more than half of my small Catholic grammar school was pulled out of class immediately.

That day and next few months are burned into my memory forever.

At home enjoying days off following duty weekend. Not long after it was realized what was occurring the phone started ringing and I would be in NYC 2 days later soon followed by GTMO. I can still smell ground zero if I think about it. My neighbor in Fredericksburg was killed in the Pentagon and left a wife and two little boys. My prayers remain with those touched by these horrific events.

RE: OT: Where Were You on This Day 16 Years Ago
First year of grad school. Professor walked in and asked if we heard "some idiot flew a plane into the WTC." When I got out of class and walked by the student union on the way to my apartment there were about 500 kids watching TV through the windows. Walked back into my apartment just in time to see the second plane hit the towers. Roommate handed me a beer and said we were going to war. Spent the rest of the day watching the TV pretty much in silence.

I've got an original 4x6 copy of this photo given to me by a good friend who was a NY firefighter. His guys were in one of the towers when they collapsed. Not many survived.

He also gave me a picture of the funeral procession for the firefighters from his station. Very eerie. In the years I knew him after, he would only speak about it briefly from time to time.

Was at work glued to the TV. Small town Texas. The mayor told everyone other than essential services to go home. Released school. A lot of fighters flying over. We later learned that the President had been flown to Bossier, LA not that far away. Mayor had a prayer vigil that afternoon, most of the town was there.

Was at my office in Boston. Watched the second tower get hit live and freaked realizing how many friends from Cornell worked in those buildings. Within a few hours, central Boston was insane as rumors spread that the terror cells were still in Copley Plaza hotels. Swat teams and fighter jets were the only noise for days as basically everyone sheltered in place.

Lost several friends that worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. Later lost another one when she developed cancer. She was a first responder.

Prayers to all.

Was in 4th grade and was actually staying with my grandmother that day. My thumb was swollen from a bee sting at recess the day before and I couldn't write. I was in the car with my mom taking my sister to school when they announced it over the radio what had happened.

I later learned that people in the Williams Tower (now BOK tower) in downtown Tulsa were communicating with people in the Trade Centers during the attacks. The BOK tower is the "little sister" to the World Trade Center towers. It's kind of a special connection Tulsa has to the event and NYC. When you add in the OKC bombing connection it makes Oklahoma seem not so far away from New York.

I was in 4th grade. Teacher explained everything that happened plus Principal made an announcement. I'm glad that none of the teachers or my mother ever hid what happened from me.
