So it used to be his overall record that was always the go to when defending him, now it's his big ten record. Sad.
It cracks me up, NIU loses and the Carey supporters are flying the players have to execute flag, they win and boy oh boy is that rod Carey one heck of a coach!

And it's not the same for all of the Carey haters?? I remember reading a lot of threads about firing Carey after last seasons record...not saying he is the greatest coach in the world but give him and his staff some credit for today. Almost every person on this board made predictions that NIU would not even come CLOSE to winning this game today. Feel free to reference the NIU vs. Nebraska predictions thread if you think I'm off base

My point was if you use the record or just purely results as the measuring stick then you have to stick with it. Regardless of what camp you are in when it comes to Roderick.
I absolutely loved the win today and was energized about niu football for the first time in quite a while.
But in the same breath I still think Carey made some bone headed decisions. Not running huff more, not using the whole play clock when trying to ice a win, throwing on 3-5 and essentially giving them an extra timeout.

Everytime there was a timeout and the team was in a huddle on the sidelines, was Rod in the middle of them trying to inspire or coach or gameplan or anything?? NOPE, he was as far away as possible and walking farther. EVERY TIME.
The only time he did anything with the players was when he felt like chewing someone out. He comes across as a total a$$h0le who likes to show up when things are going good but when anything bad happens he runs away from the team. It felt like he wanted to take credit for all the good and run and hide for all the bad. Total Chode

Gotcha. I think we can all agree some of Carey's decisions have us scratching our heads some times. Like you, I am proud and energized by the way our boys played today. It may not have been pretty, but they fought hard.

Look, I've started "Fire Carey" threads in the past (mostly last season). But I think it's been extremely noticeable how much he has improved in regards to his sideline demeanor and the overall play of the team. This team is ready to play every week. They play hard for him. He just took our beloved Huskies into Nebraska and beat them at Memorial Stadium.
I'll call him out, but he deserves praise when it's due. And i believe this team is truly behind him and he has improved a ton as a head coach...
go Huskies!

I agree with this. It looks like Coach Carey has improved his press relations, his sideline demeanor, his staff, recruiting, you name it. Coaches can develop and grow just like players and to his credit he seems to be doing just that. For those who have suggested in the past that he's lost his team check out the players hugging him right after Saturday's win. That was great to see.

RE: Rod Carey
I'm not a huge fan or detractor of the guy, but I have stood up for him in the past because I think NIU could do worse.
I have to say, any questions about if the team is against him have to be removed. They always give 100%. Some of that is competitive nature, and some is rallying around a group and guys.
I also thought I should note, a good friend of mine that played on the Orange Bowl team tweeted something along the lines of "I f*ck with my guy Rod, I don't care what the haters say."
That stood out to me as the guys from the past are behind him ask well.
Just something to note since I know there was a lot of talk on the board about players and alum not liking him.

RE: Rod Carey
For all the talk of NIU's record in their last x games in the offseason, NIU is 7-4 in their last 11 games now and have outscored opponents 343-256. Losses were to 13 win WMU, 9 win Toledo by 7, CMU in double OT, and BC by 3.
And that's with all the QB injuries. Unless NIU bombs the rest of the year and misses a bowl (ain't happening) Carey is going nowhere.

I got pissed at Pat Forde, Yahoo columnist in his article and tweet. He was saying losing to NIU used to be okay but it's not anymore. He stated they lost 11 of last 18. He didn't mention that included 5 quarterbacks, most of which were played by freshman or sophomore.
Yeah losing that many sucks, but god the injuries mounted up, and if you didn't follow the program it's easy to cherry pick stats. 6-2 over last eight and could have easily won the last nine games going back to the WMU loss.

Should they have had a better record than 7-4? Yes
But you will not admit that.

They should have? WMU and Toledo were two games they were massively out manned in and still were competitive in. You could make an argument for the CMU game, but they really should have lost the EMU game. Those wash. You could make an argument they should have beat BC, but unless you're going to tell me NIU should waltz into Nebraska with their backup QB and win, those wash as well.
All things considered, 7-4 is about right, and how well they played against WMU and Toledo means Carey's done an overall solid job since the disaster that was OOC last year.

He has done a good job.
8-3, CMU should have been a win and I disagree about EMU because we have more talent.

The EMU game was a road game against a bowl team where they were down 14-0 with their 4th string freshman QB getting his first action. They had no business coming back to win that game.

RE: Rod Carey
Graham was the main QB in 5 of the last 7 NIU losses. I know it's on Carey for putting him in there, but I'm sure there would be a few less L's if there was another choice. I'm not sure what the last game Graham has even won is.

Just some overwhelming defense from the Huskies to put them in that hole.

RE: Rod Carey
How about NC State pushing around FSU 17-7 @ FSU. Could be a landmark today for Coach Doeren

NC State up 17-10 at the half. Landmark day for Coach Doeren? Rod Carey does not want to hear that!

Carey is a dope. Terrible in front of the cameras. No way a mid major will have long term success with a goof like that running the program. The program has gone down under him and he was brutal during the BC game.
