Had a MS State player recovered the ball, would that player have been credited with an 89 yard fumble return in the stats?
No supposed to be from point of recovery.

Impressive to average 3 yards per rush after -89

It wasn't a good night by any means, but without that fumble we avg around 6 yrds which is pretty good.

But by all means, lay it on - we deserve it after that game.

Didn't think I was laying anything on with that post.

You weren't, just an expression.

It happens every now and then. In a bowl game (Coincidentally against Tech) a couple years ago, One of our wide receivers caught a TD pass and immediately started to taunt. Unfortunately, he got called for OPI, and the Unsportsmanlike conduct foul added on meant we had a 3rd and goal from the 40.

I can't remember if we punted or tried a long field goal after that.

Truthfully...speaking as a ULM fan with no love for Tech...this could have happened to anybody. You don't even need a snap over the QB's head. A fumble could have the same result. All those guys are going for the ball and several were just trying to fall on it, not scoop it up. But the ball is bouncing funny, a foot happens to kick it a couple of times, and suddenly we have the Benny Hill Show's ending sequence.

In a way I'm glad it happened to Tech and in a way I wished it hadn't. The internet is forever and this play will be there forever. These guys weren't trying to lose 87 yards but bad luck and crazy physics got in the way. Who knows...Tech might actually gain some notoriety from this play and it turns into a positive for them.

If you start on the 10 at first snd goal, it wouldn't only take a couple of bad plays/penalties to find yourself facing fourth and goal from the 35 yard line or further, not a ton of college kickers are lining up from much further than that.

My guess is 4th and goal punts are nowhere near as rare as you imagine.

I agree with you that it could have happened to anybody, but let's not downplay the sheer magnitude of this achievement. As far as I was able to dig up on the internet, the previous worst 3rd and long in recorded college football history was a mere 3rd and 57 by Georgia vs.Tennessee -- and those guys took several downs and penalties to loose that many yards - La Tech almost doubled that production in just one play.
