Tarman - though still alive - has had dementia since the late 2000s.
Yeah, there's an article about him being honored back in 2012, and he couldn't be there due to the affliction. Looking back, it looks like yet another bad gesture by the school.

I tried watching parts of Saturday's game, but, yeah...it doesn't feel right. Not even PSU-Pitt (in their throwbacks, no less...a look to the game I haven't seen since I was a kid!) could keep me too interested.
It's not the same. It was built on a lie. No evidence the school really wants to do anything really different...it's still clutching its books and privacy like it did before. No class.

The allegations from the 70s didn't come out until 2015/2016 (prior to 2012). Calling it a "bad gesture" should be looked at in that context.
The honoring was a plaque in the press box. Nice, but not some tremendous production either. Anyway, it was done more for Tarman's family vs. Tarman himself (who, unfortunately, wouldn't know what was going on). Whatever sins Tarman may have on his ledger, they aren't his family's sins.
I'm not a Paterno/Spanier/Schultz/Curley supporter. I also think anyone, like you, who is criticizing PSU for a Tarman gesture in 2012 is making a mountain out of a molehill.

Absolutely right. Christ does through the Apostles and their successors. John 20 and John 21. Good day.

What do you tell yourself if you're an alum? It's not your fault that the old ball coach was corrupt, but you're always going to have it held against you.

If I'm an alum of Penn State, I would still support the football program. It was never the fans fault, the boosters fault, etc. I think Sandusky, McQueeney, Paterno and any other coach/administrator that knew AT LEAST ONE INCIDENT and didn't report it are the only people that should be held liable. Well, except Paterno.

I couldn't do it. If I was an alumni I wouldn't support any of it. Do you know how many Catholics left the church after the child abuse scandal came out? Personally, I would see my support for the program as a tacit disregard of what happened.

Of course this is true.
I enjoy college football and attending PSU games is a great way for me to continue to connect with my college friends.
I see no reason for the failures of other Penn Staters to change either of the above.
Many of the "screw Penn State" folk you see posting in threads like this are virtue signalers. They say stuff like: "I don't support children being raped, or rape being covered up." Wow. Bold stance they're taking there. They say this as if 99.99% of PSU folk don't think the exact same thing.

The school should have hit the reset button on the football program.
Now, the program will be tainted with that for a very long time, perhaps forever.
If I was a Penn. State fan that is what I would be mad about. They let this happen in the first place and then they made sure the brand stuck.

I do think that the best way for Penn State to successfully put this behind them (in the long-term) would have been to self-sanction in the wake of the Freeh Report.
However, Mark Emmert --- in a move that was highly popular amongst most folk, including here --- inserted himself into the situation within hours (almost within minutes) of the Freeh Report being released.
The Freeh Report was released at 10 AM on 12-July-2012. The NCAA and Emmert had a statement out before lunch-time. E.g., before most folk could even read the thing (it was a multi-hundred page document, after all).
So, Emmert commandeered the bus. And did so rather immediately. Which, fair enough. But it did prevent PSU from having the opportunity to do as I suggest in my first paragraph.
On a tangent --- for all the sanctions there were, there was NOT a "show cause" penalty against Tim Curley. Which should have been a rather OBVIOUS given, based on all he was guilty of. Right?
So why was there not a "show cause" penalty? I'd like to hear yours and others theory on such.

My moral compass doesn't point the other way just cause I like football. Good for you though. Good luck in the future realizing how internet message boards work.

I know how internet message boards work. For instance, "virtue signaling" is something that occurs a lot on message boards.
And your post, particularly given your usage of the phrase "moral compass", is the DEFINITION of virtue signaling.

Good job sir. You've made the world a better place today by lecturing me about your superior "moral compass."

And you've shown what kind of person you are by continuing to support a school that turned a blind on to a serial pedophile over the course of decades. So there's that.

Pedos operating in Protestant denominations is just as common as Catholic churches, and yes a lot of it gets covered up. The Protestant churches are a lot more decentralized and the media does not cover it much.

Could be talking about person to person forgiveness. Where is any evidence that the apostles had to intercede for man? It's nowhere to be found in the New Testament.

You might want to paint me like any other PSU-hater, but, from the beginning, I was against any NCAA involvement without proper discussion and detail about why they belonged there and how any penalties were tied to a specific root problem. To me, their involvement was always a bad and unjustified one because they failed to do any heavy lifting of their own. And, this is just another component that comes from that big mishap. If you're going to say this warranted "show cause," you're saying this really was an athletic department issue. But...was it?
Who knows the logic. I kind of think, if the NCAA has to go after PSU, and it involves a coach, AD, security administrator, and president, this is totally administrative. Shut down ALL of PSU athletics. Don't scapegoat the football program because of Paterno. And, yet, that's what happened. And, that's why people have sympathy for the team and still find reason to support them. I challenge anyone who wanted to see the football program roast to they themselves man up, and tell a player from any of those impacted teams they deserved the punishment they got.
But, the NCAA went with the easy lift for every part of this.

Yeah, I know that type of Catholic. They seem to forget the parable of the wheat and the tares. Again, you hold the culprits responsible.
