Fans turning off the NFL with players continuing to disrespect the fans and the flag during the national anthem.
It going to another ugly year for the NFL if the players keep this up. Turning their fans away will mean multi-million dollar paydays will be no more.
All we can say is that ratings are down. We have no idea why ratings might be down, although I sincerely doubt the reason you posit is playing too big a role.
And you'd be spectacularly wrong.
It's played a direct role and there have been surveys/polls that say exactly that. Look at the Cheerleaders channel msespn, how them ratings going?
People are disgusted by the disrespect and arrogance/entitlement of a bunch of million dollar crybabies. Who do they think are paying those salaries? The owners?

Doesn't really explain how football ratings are down across the board.
I think it is a head fake. There are more systematic issues in play. There's the whole changing the way we are entertained away from broadcasts (or any kind), and the fact that football in general just isn't as popular a sport as it was at its peak.

That was actually a myth. Hunt never said that.

Amazing, for all the complaints about "fake news", how many Facebook posts, Twitter memes, and spam emails I see reposted as fact on here.

Winner.
Broadcast/cable ratings are down everywhere. Sports, tv shows, all of it. NFL Ratings aren't down 9% because some Cleveland Browns sat during a preseason game. People aren't canceling their cable (you can't just cancel ESPN with most cable plans) because of the "liberal bias" of ESPN.
I'm sure SOME people are doing that. I've yet to see any proof that it's enough to hurt the NFL.
The NFL is going to be fine. They have sucked at streaming games for a long time, but they are getting better. For all of these conservative wet dreams about the NFL failing and the money drying up , they still had 10 of the top 25 watched broadcasts of 2016. They are the number 1 sport, and sports are the only DVR proof thing left on TV. The numbers might not be what they once were, but that's true for everything on broadcast networks and cable.

Kap was in the Raven's office ready to sign when his girlfriend tweeted that theRavens owner was like a slave owner.

The NFL has a simple solution to the knuckleheads kneeling for the National Anthem. Keep all the players in the locket room like the colleges do. If they want to kneel there, only the team sees them.

America was founded with money on the mind. No need to stop now.
Patriotism itself is used as a moneymaking tool.

- Cutting the cord - The phenomenon of television consumers refusing to pay cable giants for original content is real, and it's growing.

- Agenda-driven programming - The brass at ESPN has taken a decidedly leftward tack in its programming. [G]one are the days when ESPN kept politics out of its programming and deliberately avoided alienating half of its audience.
- Overpayment for rights fees - ESPN has grossly overpaid for rights fees for the NFL and NBA, and is locked into those deals for several years. Sunday Night Football -- available for free on NBC -- has eclipsed Monday Night Football on ESPN (for an expensive subscription) in importance and viewership.
- Ratings for live sporting events are down - Ratings for Monday Night Football dropped 24% in 2016. The blame for this is shared equally by the NFL and its corporate media partners.
May I present Exhibit A for Agenda Driven Programming - Jemele Hill
Jemele Hill yesterday tweeted that Donald Trump is a white supremacist. ESPN apologizes for her and nothing comes of it. Now, I remember Curt Shilling being fired for espousing his political views. The hypocrisy is apparent a reason folks are fed up with and disconnecting from ESPN.

Schilling had a long history of posting inflammatory things against liberals, muslims, transgender people, etc. There were many Curt Schilling twitter controversies, ESPN apologies, and second chances before he was fired.
Having said that, it was a dumb thing to post, I don't ageee with it, and I think she should face some repercussions.
It's just a little early to be screaming hypocrisy. Schilling didn't tweet one controversial thing and then get fired; he had a long history of controversial tweets and second chances from ESPN before he was canned.

Linda Cohn was suspended. The Adler thing was just Twitter justice warriors getting their way and ESPN should pay for that one.

If the Cowboys and Giants had been the opener, you probably would have had record ratings.
The Patriots have always been unpopular and boring and the chiefs are more of a regional fan base.
Ummm That was the Sunday night game and it Got fewer viewers than the Thursday night game.

ESPN doesn't get the rating that it used to in my opinion because there are just way too many choices now. Shoot, there must be like 5 or 6 ESPN channels, two or three Fox channels, NBC sports, CBS sports. BEIN sports, even the conferences have their own channels now.
I think it has nothing at all to do with politics.

The reason you noted above no undoubtedly has some impact on viewership; however, to think politics plays no part is naive. Anyway, if someone has stopped watching for another reason, the political nonsense just gives him/her another reason to not return. Personally, I don't watch ESPN because I can't stand all the talk shows. I'll watch a live sporting event, but that's all, at least on ESPN.

I only watch the live sporting events as well. I used to watch a lot more when the original guys were on there too.
I don't hardly recognize anyone on that channel anymore
