NFL Opening Game (Patriots/Chiefs) down 12% from last year
http://deadline.com/2017/09/patriots-chi...202163914/

Fans turning off the NFL with players continuing to disrespect the fans and the flag during the national anthem.

It going to another ugly year for the NFL if the players keep this up. Turning their fans away will mean multi-million dollar paydays will be no more.

All we can say is that ratings are down. We have no idea why ratings might be down, although I sincerely doubt the reason you posit is playing too big a role.

Look at the comments. Fans are upset at the players......That is what started the big decline last year with Kapernick leading the way and why it is continuing to decline.

I don't disagree with your reason but it is likely only one of several reasons. I would say it would be because we are tired of watching the Cheatriots.

People are boycotting the NFL because Kap hasn't been signed. I spent last night watching PVA&M lose to Sam Houston state. If you watch football because of a damn flag, you're an idiot.

There have been a few reasons talked about.

One reason is fan reaction to the CK flag protest.

Another reason mentioned is the current cord cutting phenomenon. People are ditching cable/satellite in record numbers.

The third reason I've seen is that part of the decline in sports is due to the fact that Millennials are not as interested in sports as previous generations.

I imagine the declining numbers are due to a combination of these with a few other reasons tossed in.

The Top 5 Reasons ESPN's Ratings Are in Freefall

  1. Cutting the cord - The phenomenon of television consumers refusing to pay cable giants for original content is real, and it's growing.
  2. Bad programming - ESPN has struggled for many years to find new, compelling content to draw in new viewers while keeping their existing viewers engaged.
  3. Agenda-driven programming - The brass at ESPN has taken a decidedly leftward tack in its programming. [G]one are the days when ESPN kept politics out of its programming and deliberately avoided alienating half of its audience.
  4. Overpayment for rights fees - ESPN has grossly overpaid for rights fees for the NFL and NBA, and is locked into those deals for several years. Sunday Night Football -- available for free on NBC -- has eclipsed Monday Night Football on ESPN (for an expensive subscription) in importance and viewership.
  5. Ratings for live sporting events are down - Ratings for Monday Night Football dropped 24% in 2016. The blame for this is shared equally by the NFL and its corporate media partners.

Even with dropping rates, live sports will always be Mecca for ADs. Nothing on TV equals it. I don't see values going low in the next TV contracts negotiations.

Reason #2 has nothing to do with that as the game was on OTA on NBC not on cable.

And a lot less kids are playing football and are playing other sports (or not playing sports at all). Anecdotal, but my kids and my kids friends just aren't as interested in football as me and my friends were. There are a lot of entertainment options out there, and most aren't 3 1/2 hours long.

Football had to hit a peak sometime. It will still be popular entertainment, just not as popular.

How about we get real?

Ratings are down because the NFL has been putting out a crap product and 99% of the drama happens off the field.

Whats going on actually on the gridiron is boring.

ESPN Lost More Than A Million Subscribers In The Last Two Months
12/01/2016 11:56 am ET
By Travis Waldron

Quote:The end of November brought another round of bad news to ESPN: the self-proclaimed Worldwide Leader in Sports lost 555,000 cable subscribers during the month, according to Nielsen. It’s a big dip in the network’s customer base that followed a record-loss of 621,000 subscribers in October.

Quote:ESPN, like the broader cable industry, has been losing subscribers at a fairly regular rate ― about 300,000 per month ― over the last two years, and in a quarterly earnings report released a year ago, it admitted to losing 7 million subscribers between 2011 and 2015.

ESPN Now Costs $7.21 Per Month, Five Times More Than Any Other National Cable Channel
August 29th, 2016, 10:22 pm
By Joe DePaolo

Quote:The Chicago Tribune reports that ESPN is now charging distributors $7.21 per month per subscriber. That’s more than five times the next highest national channel, Fox News, which charges carriers a monthly rate of $1.41 per subscriber.

The first article says ESPN has been losing about 300,000 subscribers per month. That's a revenue decrease of $2,163,000 every month.

That's not a net loss of 2,163,000 each month. That an additional $2,163,000 each month.

The article said they lost a total of 7 million subscribers by the end of 2015. At $7.21 a head, they're monthly revenue was taking a $50,470,000 monthly hit. That's $605,640,000 annually.

And those numbers were 2015. If they kept losing 300,000 per month over 2016 and through 2017...

2016: 300,000 x 12 = 3,600,000
2017: 300,000 x 8 = 2,400,000

That's another 6 million lost subscribers added to the 7 million they had lost through 2015.

13,000,000 fewer subscribers at $7.21 each is $93,730,000 PER MONTH they've lost since their heydays prior to 2011.

That's an annual revenue loss of $1,124,760,000.

It's tough for practically any company to eat $1B per year.

No wonder they've been laying off staff.

And maybe that's why Disney is pulling their products from Netflix et al and starting their own streaming service.

I wonder how much they'll charge for a monthly subscription. $7.50? More?

It's more than that. I honestly think fans could tolerate the anthem sitters just fine. But they are the straw that breaks the camels back. Too much SJW-ness, too little sport.

Football ratings are down across the board, not just the NFL. I think blaming the decrease on the anthem bru-haha is a red herring. There are more important reasons to ascribe the decrease.

Still, it should be noted that NFL (and college football) ratings are still very strong compared to other sports. We've just probably seen the peak.

The Chiefs owner stated that anyone who sat or kneeled during the anthem would be kicked off the team. No. 22 was sitting down and later he was on the field. I didn't see him for too long so I'm wondering if the owner kept his word. Anyone know for sure?

Yep, that's why I stopped watching virtually all non panther games. Even those games are of much less interest to me these days.

blah blah blah blah

If the Cowboys and Giants had been the opener, you probably would have had record ratings.

The Patriots have always been unpopular and boring and the chiefs are more of a regional fan base.
