We have nowhere to go but up! Even Cleveland State is ranked ahead of us.

I was shocked to see Kyle Conel was back on the roster. Hmmmm...

Looks as though the Northern Illinois program is struggling. In addition to losing a stud, I read there are 10 other wrestlers that have left the program.

Central Michigan's starters at 125 and 133 have left the Chips for North Dakota State and Penn State.

RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
The KSU Wrestling team should be much more competitive this season (Lambert58 is right, there is only 1 way to go but up).

125lbs - much better @ this weight with Will Bardezbain (5th yr transfer from Boise State) & Jake Ferri (transfer from Notre Dame College of Ohio) as well Colin Schuster (redshirt candidate)
133lbs - should be better @ this weight as well, with Tutolo back to 100%, with Cory Simpson & Raphael Rodriguez (redshirt candidate) backing him up
141lbs - Chance Driscoll returns for his 5th yr as the incumbent, challenged by Tim Rooney & Nick Henneman
149lbs - Freshmen Jake Martinez, Nick Monico, Jake Hinkson, & Kody Komara competing for this starting spot
157lbs - Casey Sparkman returns for his 4th year (RS JR) as the starter and should be primed for an even better year than last year, backed up by Richard Jackson, Ben Heyob, & Jacob Spino
165lbs - Isaac Bast returns as the incumbent and will be challenged by Lane Hinkle & Richard Jackson
174lbs - Lane Hinkle, Dylan Barreiro, & Colin McCracken will battle it out for the starting spot
184lbs - Shane Mast returns as the incumbent and will be challenged by Colin McCracken, Josh Barr (redshirt candidate), & possibly Kyle Conel
197lbs - Stephen Suglio returns as the incumbent for his 5th year @ KSU and will be challenged by Kyle Conel and Floyd Rogers (redshirt candidate)
HWT - Devin Nye returns as the incumbent for his 4th year (RS JR) and will be challenged by true freshmen Billy Bolia & Spencer Berthold

The updated roster is on http://www.kentstatesports.com

Lambert58, any insight into who is winning the battles @ the 125lbs, 149lbs, 165lbs, & 174lbs thus far?

The following didn't return to KSU from last season: 141lbs Collin Adkins, 184lbs/197lbs Andrew Jones, 165lbs Jared Walker

I just don't understand. We were a powerhouse for so long. Not as a team on the National scene, but with individuals every single year capable of earning All-American status. Now we are at the bottom of the conference?

Did Jimmy not recruit well? Did we have everyone transfer out at once?

RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
I would say multiple years of poor recruiting is the issue. Only Tutolo and Conel (even he left the team last year and apparently has just returned) have had any success. I have no idea why but for some reason the train came off the tracks.

They're a top 5 squad, again. Here are rankings as of 9/9/17:

133 Erneste #8
141 Elerman #4
157 Lavallee #2
174 Lewis #5
197 Miklus #3

No one in the MAC will be competitive against them. Unfortunately, Northern Iowa left the conference as they were very capable of challenging Mizzou.

141 Alber #12
149 Thomsen #3
165 Steiert #6
174 Lujan #10
184 Foster #4

RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
WIN Magazine (W) and Flo Wrestling (F) rankings are refenced below. With UNI out of the conference, and Missouri being dominant, the race is for 2nd place. My money is on CMU with Buffalo being the dark horse contender.

125
As a true freshman last year, Simpson wasn’t ready for the collegiate grind. Although he was a very good high school wrestler, he didn’t have a hs career that would allow him to jump straight into D1 competition. The transfers will do better but 125 is a brutal weight class in the MAC. I’ve never seen either Bardezbain or Feueri wrestle but I suspect Bardezbain may end up being the starter given his D1 experience. Regardless, we will probably be near the bottom at 125 even with the CMU wrestler’s transfer out of the conference.

Akins Buffalo #10 W
Hudkins Northern Illinois #14 F / #12 W
Laney Ohio #16 F / #11 W
Gonser Eastern Michigan #18 W
McGhee Missouri #19 W – he won the MAC tournament last season and was 5-1 in duals. Sometimes the “experts” don’t know what they’re talking about.

133
I just hope Tutolo stays healthy. His collegiate career hasn’t gone smoothly; he’s either been injured or at the wrong weight. Hopefully we get to see him at 100%, but this is another deep weight in the MAC. The CMU transfer to Penn State is ranked #16.

Lantry Buffalo #6 F / #5 W
Erneste Missouri #8 F / #9 W
Kelly Ohio #15 F
Tutolo KSU #19 F / #18 W

141
Unlike 125 and 133, this class is thin. Being Driscoll’s last year, hopefully he can put together a good season.

Eierman Missouri #4 F / #4 W

149
We have some depth here. Although young, Monico and Komara have strong high school resumes. I give the edge to Monico because he has a season of collegiate wrestling. Missouri doesn’t have a ranked wrestler at this weight only because he was injured last year. He won 3 Missouri state titles in high school so don’t think we will finish better than 3rd.

Oliver CMU #6 F / #7 W

157
As with Tutolo, Sparkman has been injured more than once so I don’t think we’ve seen him at his best. With Lavallee here, 2nd is the goal.

Lavallee Missouri #2 F / #2 W
Heffernan CMU #12 F / #9 W

165
The MAC has no ranked wrestlers at this weight class in either ranking authority. Bast has the varsity experience but Hinkle had a very strong redshirt year. I have no idea whether one has the edge over the other. We will have to wait and see but this is a great opportunity for us as a team. Missouri’s representative at this weight is a transfer from West Virginia. Before that, he was undefeated his junior and senior years of high school so the goal is 2nd.

174
If he can’t unseat Bast, Hinkle will be up against Barreiro at this weight class. In addition to Monico, KSU is expecting big things from Barreiro. He and Monico were highly regarded recruits with very strong high school careers.

Lewis Missouri #5 F / #5 W
Brucki CMU #12 F / #10 W

184
Mast is the returning starter and had a decent season at 15-15. With a year of experience, he has a better opportunity to win some of the matches that he gave away last year. With only 1 ranked wrestler at 184, this is an opportunity to help the team win some duals that we lost last year. Missouri’s 3 wresters at 184 all won state titles in high school. I’m not kidding…

Ellingwood CMU #8 F / #8 W

197
Suglio is the starter as he, unlike Conel, knows that he wants to wrestle. That being said, I believe Conel is clearly the better of the 2. If Conel disappears again, Suglio will represent us well at this weight. I’ve read that Miklus is injured so I’m not sure he will wrestle. This weight is a great opportunity for KSU to score points.

Miklus Missouri #5 F / #5 W
Conel KSU #19 F

285
Another weight class with depth, but without any studs in the conference. Will Nye reach his potential and get over his middle of the pack placements for the past 2 years? You guessed it, Missouri has multiple wrestlers at 285 that won state titles in high school including a 4-time champion from Kentucky. Although a weaker state when it comes to wrestling, he went 189-0. Even with this stable, they landed a St Ed recruit that was ranked as the 5th best nationally at 220 lbs.

Hutchison Eastern Michigan #19 F
Smerchek CMU #19 W
Gunning Buffalo #20 W

Coach Moore was the primary recruiter and had 2 average classes before he left for Cleveland State. Josh should have been hired as a head coach, and when that didn't happen, it created an awkward situation on the recruiting trail. It was known that he was looking so recruits were gun shy to come here. In his first year, Hill did ok, but last year's class was disastrous. On paper, it was a great class but there was a huge disconnect somewhere. The roster was gutted and this year could be considered a re-set. On the heels of our best season since the 80s, there was bound to be a let down, but we went full rock bottom. There's a lot of talent on the roster and hopefully the instability and inexperience of the coaching staff (it's very young) doesn't continue to harm us.

2/3 years of poor recruiting definitely contributed to last season's debacle. What's interesting is that the recent classes have been very comparable on paper to those that produced our best seasons. The only difference has been the absence of a Kilgore or Miller, but keep in mind that even they didn't have the high school resumes like the recruits that sign with programs such as PSU and OSU. So on paper, we aren't that far off of the mark. Although talented, however, there was a disconnect between the recruits and expectations of the program given the exodus of so many wrestlers. There's no doubt that the 2/3 years of coaching staff inconsistency had a much more pronounced effect than anticipated. What remains to be seen is whether Coach A has made the correct moves to get us back to what we've seen in prior seasons.

RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
http://www.kentstatesports.com/news/2017...-mode.aspx

125 - Whenever a true freshman beats a 5th year senior, I automatically assume there is an issue with the older wrestler (sick or injured), or maybe he's just not very good. However, in this case, it may be that the freshman is really good as Ferri beat both transfers - Feuer and Bardezbain - the other night. In March, Ferri placed second at the NHSCA High School Wrestling Championships and he did win 2 New England titles as a junior and a senior. Given the presence of 2 transfers, I imagine Ferri will be redshirted. We seem to be in good shape at this weight but Bardezbain and Feuer will need to step it up.

133 - Tutolo is solid.

141 - Simpson (starter last year at 125) moved up and lost 2 matches. I imagine he will drop to 133 and serve as a backup to Tutolo or take a redshirt as there's depth at 141 in Driscoll, Rooney, and Henneman. Rooney went 2-0, while Driscoll and Henneman went 1-1. Despite the depth, this weight is a big question mark.

149 - Monico looked good against a very talented freshman in Kody Komara, who is from Coach Hill's high school. Both wrestlers had sold high school careers and we should be good here.

157 - This is another weight class with depth. Jackson gave Sparkman all he could handle, and Heyob only lost by 1 to Sparkman. We are solid here. As with 125 and 141, will the depth produce a starter that will contend in the MAC?

165 - Byland was close with Bast through 2 periods, but Bast dominated the 3rd. If he can stay healthy, he should be able to improve over last year. Still a question mark, however, until mid-November / December.

174 - Hinkle and Barreiro had the most entertaining bout with Hinkle chasing Barreiro for almost all 7 minutes. However, Barreiro showed patience, wrestled his match, and won 8-3. Barreiro is another New England product with great high school credentials. Barreiro could be our second best wrestler after Tutolo.

184 - The true freshman (McCracken) beat Mast in OT. Unlike 125, we have very little depth at this weight and it may be a struggle this season with either a true freshman or Mast (only a sophomore and 15-15 last year) being the starter. Mast showed signs of being a good wrestler last year, but his inexperience hurt him.

197 - Although no one wrestled at this weight, I did see Conel with the team. I think the coaching staff is going to let this class work itself out during tournaments and in the room. It ought to be "interesting".

285 - Like 125, I hope this was a case of a very good true freshman showing he's ready for college wrestling and not a sign that Nye is no better than his 5-3 MAC finish last year. Bolia is a tank and had a great high school career so I hope it is the former.

I'm guardedly optimistic. There's decent talent in the room and the transition BS should be over so this season will be all about the coaching and the staff's ability to get the most out of this still very young squad.

A bit more optimistic than I anticipated. Let’s see how it turns out. I suppose it could not be any worse than last year.

They will be better than last year. That’s not an ambitious prediction on my part. lol. There is more depth but that was also the case at the beginning of last year too.

Decided to see the team first hand today. First time on campus since last March and what a mess. Summit street is under major construction and only open going south. The main parking lot is smaller and full. Parked about 0.5 mile away. It’s going to be fun this year. I assume there will be shuttles during the men’s games but for the women’s team, wrestling and gymnastics it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Good to see that KSU’s parking “services” still sucks. lol I attempted to park in the student center lot because I saw open spots. Of course, the lot was “full” and I was turned away. Fortunately, I knew to go across the street but for anyone not familiar with the area, it’s confusing as hell. Throw in the construction equipment and students and it’s an even bigger mess. Imagine how bad it will be at night, in the rain / snow.
