RE: ODU Beat Writer on CUSA Possible Regreats Regarding Liberty
Texas State and UTSA were added by the WAC, so even if C-USA took Louisiana, Arkansas State, and WKU a year sooner instead of Old Dominion, Charlotte, and UTSA - and Troy instead of Louisiana Tech - then the Sun Belt would have basically been left with ULM and South Alabama (who immediately filed to move to FBS upon expiration of the moratorium).

If the WAC were left with all three of UTSA, Texas State, and Lousiana Tech, then it probably would recast itself as a southeastern conference by taking in ULM and South Alabama. New Mexico State would be a full member, Idaho perhaps tolerates the setup instead of moving to the Big Sky, and then the invites for Georgia State (2013), Georgia Southern (2014) and Appalachian State (2014) are for the WAC, not the Sun Belt. Denver and UT-Arlington likely stay as well, and the WAC probably picks up UALR just to close down the Sun Belt:

Idaho
New Mexico State
Denver*
Seattle*
Texas State
UTSA
Texas Arlington*
South Alabama
Lousiana Tech
Louisiana Monroe
Little Rock*
Georgia State
Georgia Southern
Appalachian State (or Charlotte)

If Idaho still bows out, then likely the other of Appalachian State/Charlotte is next in line. If Seattle follows them out the door, then that opens up the spot for Old Dominion or Coastal Carolina.

All of the Great West schools would still be homeless, and Grand Canyon and Cal Baptist would be stuck in Division II. Even NJIT might be left in the Great West if the CAA and/or Big South had one fewer school to replace.

ODU signaled their intent to go FBS before Appalachian State or Georgia Southern. In fact, and some of you GaSo types can verify or dispute, wasn't Southern slow-boiling their FBS aspirations for a while? I remember their AD talking about a long game in that regard a few years ago, then the winds shifted and they moved.

So my guess, based on ODU's accelerated FBS ambitions with the CAA becoming destabilized, and Benson's broad expansion hopes, is that ODU would have joined the Sun Belt had CUSA not come calling, and probably done so before Appalachian and GaSo.

You left out Troy which is mainly an online school.

I think it was a huge mistake.

It's quite obvious it was out of fear of Liberty very quickly overshadowing them.

At the end of the day, they don't want to be associated with a school whose enrollment is 85% online. Same reason that Grand Canyon will struggle to find a real conference.

Liberty might end up overshadowing them in football, but this decision was not a football decision.

I've said the same thing about having concern over the online enrollment figures.

The only thing is that as a whole the institution is roughly on par with those in CUSA.

Academically??? I'm honestly insulted. It's a shiny diploma mill.

US NEws, whose entire business model is now ranking colleges, has Liberty as "NAtioinal Universities, Tier 2, Rank Not Published."

Gonna compare to a semi-random sample of CUSA--ODU, FIU, UAB, UNT, UTSA.

ODU #210 (tie)
FIU. RNP, Tier 2.
UAB. #159
UNT. RNP, Tier 2.
UTSA. RNP, Tier 2.

Checking to see what the bottom of the scale is, Chicago STate is "Regional Universities Midwest Tier 2.

If you want to check what SAT/ACT scores you need to get into Liberty vs others, you can do that. US News gives their acceptance rate as 21%, which was way more selective than I'd expected. Compare to Old Dominion with an 83% acceptance rate.

Who in the world are the 4 in 5 Liberty University applicants who get rejected?

Jax State idiot. There are more prestigious community colleges than the mediocre high school that is Jax State. Troy is Harvard compared to jax state. I cant believe jsu hasn't been shut down.

Minorities, atheists, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Buddhists, Democrats, Independents, self-hating Republicans, commies, socialists, Malaccans, Russian bots, and Teletubbies. Unless they have cash, then they can attend online.

I'm fairly surprised that they're applying.

That ranking only means they award enough terminal degrees to meet the national criteria, unranked means not especially well regarded.

Me too. BYU even takes other non-LDS for those sports, as a I have a family member who isn't a white Mormon who played there. The honor code is what they care about, and said relative signed that and complied and made it through 2 years at BYU before finally getting a degree at New Mexico.--I think.
