Baseball doesn't have a conference problem, but it will be funded by community efforts, not by Akron U.
Kent St, C Mich, Cleveland St, and Detroit have women's lax, so a new conference might not be far off.

They all play in the Atlantic Sun which, if Akron joined, would have 13 members along with the planned addition of Kent St in 2018-2019. The MAC should sponsor women's lacrosse.

MAC: Akron, Kent St, Central Michigan, Old Dominion, Detroit Mercy, Howard, Delaware St

A-Sun: Jacksonville, Coastal Carolina, Mercer, Furman, Stetson, Kennesaw St

Outstanding approach to funding mostly non revenue sports. Perhaps it can be applied by other universities to sports that have either been contracted or those like LaCrosse that could be added cost effectively

Guess the SoCon women's lax conference has already been announced, as Wofford has added women's lax.

SoCon: Furman, Mercer, Wofford, C Mich, Delaware St, Detroit

That league will probably add Akron as an affiliate, although Kent St will join the A SUN.

Didn't realize Cleveland St only added men's lax

ASUN and SoCon have a lacrosse alliance. SoCon sponsors the men and ASUN sponsors the women. This is similar to the ASUN - Big South football agreement.

How about some context....

Quote:Director of Athletics Larry Williams today announced their intention to recommend a novel, community support-backed effort...

"Intention to recommend" isn't anywhere close to the same thing as "will be funded".

Both don’t exist right now, and both may never start. Zero money has been raised as right now. There is a lot of talk for baseball in a conference that really doesn’t care about it.

The MAC used to require baseball, but that stipulation was dropped before Akron dropped it.

A school wouldn't put out a press release like they did unless it had reasonable assurances that the money will be there.

Buffalo had to pour money into a baseball facilities and start a team as a condition of getting in.

It’s obvious you’ve never been to Akron.

Even the guys on zipsnation.org believe this won’t happen. You can also send out a wordy press release to dig up money too.

Their trying to crowdfund both of these programs.

It's not implausible that the President mostly wants to shut up people hassling him about restarting baseball. "Yes, we have a plan in place for that, based on a community supported model. How much can I put you down for?"

Isn't Cleveland State wrestling on the same "community funded" model?

Many of the Kent State programs are on that model, but it was rather raising scholarship endowments for existing programs than starting a new team and restarting a canceled team on Kickstarter.

Here is more background on Akron's plans, as each sport with costs an estimated $200 to 300 k.
