Yes, free speech should be squashed whenever possible.

Free speech is not absolute. Just as you can't scream fire in a theater, you cannot express your political leaning at school if it infringes of the learning of others.

ONLY if that is policy in this school district. Doesn't seem that it is.

Exactly. I'm almost sure it is.

Wrong...

Well if it isn't then that is one stupid school district because they would be in violation of a federal ruling.

Yup.

Seems the only violation of policy was the teacher violating the bullying and harassment policies.

Yeah, I believe that one.

Just this afternoon my daughter called me. She was distraught.

Background: She's a homeschooled high school senior and is taking Dual Enrollment classes at the University of Memphis.

Knowing she would soon be heading to college I've been preparing her for the coming assault on her conservative beliefs.

Classes started last week. This past Monday was a holiday, so today was her 3rd time in a college classroom.

After class today (General Psychology and English Comp) she called me. Her English professor talked about their first writing assignment. It's on Malcolm X. That took him to a lengthy rant about his disdain for white Christians and for Trump.

She was livid. She even said it's not about his personal beliefs, but that he's ranting when she's there -- paying tuition -- to actually learn something.

I told her how proud of her I am. We talked about ways to approach the issue and will talk further about it.

But her anger in reaction to his rantings made my day.

So, what were you saying about not being able to "express your political leaning at school if it infringes of the learning of others?"

Next class day the whole class should come to her room wearing MAGA shirts. It should make her head explode.

College is a whole other can of worms. It's not public school and she is paying for those classes. If she doesn't like it, she should go to the dean and get another class.

College is about challenging your beliefs. If you want your little girl to remain the way she is and believe only what you want her to believe then you should encourage her to quit college.

If you want her to see the world from a different perspective however and become educated enough to make her own decisions about society then be prepared for her to become something you may not have hoped for. In the end remember that she is your daughter and her politics shouldn't be an issue.

Technically, state schools are public schools. They receive tax-payer funding.

Also, please stop implying my intentions.

As I stated, I've been preparing her for what she will face. And I'm incredibly proud of how she's faced her first challenge.

I've told her there will be many more with varying levels of intensity.

But let me ask you this: if college is about challenging the student's beliefs, should they challenge every belief? By challenging only conservative beliefs aren't they failing those students by not challenging their liberal beliefs?

The rationalization for a liberal mindset in the university system is to challenge beliefs. But in practice they tend to challenge beliefs opposed to their own.

I reject the claim that college is intended to challenge beliefs. The rationale should be restated accurately.

Quote:Technically, state schools are public schools. They receive tax-payer funding.

Technically true but unlike public school, you have a choice of which college you want to attend and which classes you want to take. Not the case in High School.

Quote:As I stated, I've been preparing her for what she will face. And I'm incredibly proud of how she's faced her first challenge.

What exactly have you been preparing her to face? Partying and drugs? Questioning religion or God? Having to read the Koran? What exactly are you talking about?

Quote:But let me ask you this: if college is about challenging the student's beliefs, should they challenge every belief? By challenging only conservative beliefs aren't they failing those students by not challenging their liberal beliefs?

Conservative beliefs are predominately taught at home because they are the most mundane. Family values, moral stories are taught to every child at home. Therefore, it's not until a high education comes into the picture that a young adult is ready to be challenged and think differently about the world they grew up in. I

Quote:The rationalization for a liberal mindset in the university system is to challenge beliefs. But in practice they tend to challenge beliefs opposed to their own.

That is a generalization but not entirely untrue. What college tried to do is make student think about how the world has been and challenge them to see the world how it can be. Whereas conservative value systems by definition see the world as it used to be and long to go back to those times. Liberal beliefs by definition frees the human to look to the future and how it can be made better.

Quote:I reject the claim that college is intended to challenge beliefs. The rationale should be restated accurately.

You can reject it if you want to. As I said before, if you don't want your daughter to change, don't send her to college.

I think you are doing her a disservice however if you"preparing " her to be close minded to whatever is being taught there.

I think it was in Iowa. The kids names were Turner or Tanner or something like that.

The court on the issue:

Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District

The court's 7–2 decision held that the First Amendment applied to public schools, and that administrators would have to demonstrate constitutionally valid reasons for any specific regulation of speech in the classroom. The court observed, "It can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate."

So do you want to retract that "she was following a federal ruling"?
