Quote:The thing that scared me the most for UAB coming into this season came to reality on Saturday as the offensive line struggled to protect A.J. Erdely.

He was sacked three times, and it felt like he was under duress most of the game.

Yep. That's my main concern.

Ball State has arguably the best defensive lineman in the MAC. We better have a come to God this week.

The offensive line is always the most challenging unit for every team. Those teams who have good OLs have the Heisman Trophy candidate QBs and RBs -- it is not just a coincidence. No player does his best throwing or running from a prone position. UAB is going to get a reality check test against a good MAC team, and we all hope to see the team emerge successfully from this test. Ball State may be the best opponent in the first half of our schedule.

You don't see a lot of 6'2 left tackles in D1 Football, for good reason.

That said, the thing that concerned me the most about the pressure that A&M got on us was that they weren't really doing a good job disguising it. Once we saw it was coming, why were we not checking out of plays?

That was probably by design. We physically overmatched AAMU and the staff probably felt they still had things in hand even when it seemed close. They didn't want to show their checks on film for BSU to see. Same on defense. They stayed very basic throughout the entire game

I'd buy that. Clark is a chess master. I just hope we can buy enough time to take advantage of Ubosi and Turner's size.

Though I didn't see many (if any) Saturday, it looks like quick passes and slant plays will be our friends this season...oh yeah, and three productive running backs.

Watching us pound the left side again and again late in the game Saturday was a thing of beauty.

If it does come down to special teams, it seems we're solid. We just need a solid return man.

I think all our backs can be productive behind this line. When the holes opened up, they were huge. I was a little impressed by A&Ms defense. They were bringing pressure from everywhere, and the stunts helped too. They should be solid for their level of play.

One thing I didn't like about the punt returner was the constant spinning and not getting up field. Sure he could break one with a spin, but it's only a matter of time before he loses sight of the defenders and they come in for a strip or he fumbles due to a tackle hitting the ball.

I think we played one of the Best Linebackers we will see all season and the running back was very good, He just happened to play against our Dline. I don't think Ball state has the speed we do. I know they played lights out against the fighting Illini. Which is for some reason one of my favorite teams. I think we will find out how good A&M is, when the green play Ball State on Saturday. Nobody likes to lose to the Blazers. and The Blazers have a chip on the shoulders Ball State should be good and motivated to play their home game and the green should be equally motivated to play on the road look for a good game to take all 3 quarters to shape the game in the fourth, Hopefully know one gets put away early. Watch the bomb pass from them early sure they would like put us away early and have fun.

Everyone talks about how well Ball State played against Illinois, but has anyone considered that Illinois may have also been playing a vanilla game because they have the high-scoring, pre-season CUSA champion WKU team coming to town this week?

Illinois just isn't a good team. Won't be surprised if they go 2-10 or 3-9 again this year.

Really hope our offense does a better job Saturday

I watched the Illinois / Ball State game closely and I don't believe they played 24 freshman by design to keep things vanilla. They are in rebuild mode.

Ball State's offense was very straight forward but effective. Two tightend sets and power running, quick outs and bubble screens, etc. They maintained possession and should have won if they didn't botch a punt return coverage late in the game. They also had a receiver get stripped of the ball deep in Illinois territory and they got 7 from it early.
