Look it up. It isn't hard to find examples of other countries on this continent referring to themselves as American.

There is even a soccer club in Mexico simply called "America" in fact, their mascot is an eagle.

Imagine that? Mexicans cheering an "American Eagle"

People in other American countries call themselves by their country. Examples: Mexican, Canadian, Peruvian, Brazilian, Colombian, Costa Rican, and so on. Get it?
