USM visit wins over top Louisiana recruit

By Tim Doherty

Three years ago, Ryan Hebert was an underwhelming sophomore defensive tackle who had some physical tools but wasn't sure what to do with them.

For the past two seasons, however, Hebert has been an overwhelming offensive tackle at H.L. Bourgeois High School in Houma, La.

He performed well enough to attract scholarship offers from the likes of Arkansas, Nebraska and South Carolina.

But after paying an early-December trip to Southern Miss, Hebert picked up the telephone and politely informed the others that he would not be taking the rest of his scheduled campus visits.

"It was just everything, about how comfortable I felt there," Hebert said. "You could tell people cared. The people up there were outstanding."

Hebert, a 6-foot-6, 305-pound Gary, La., native, orally committed to USM before he left Hattiesburg on Dec. 4. He said he intends to sign with the Golden Eagles on National Signing Day on Feb.2.
