CCU should be above App. They won and APP didn't come close.

You're correct, Umass and Georgia are similar football teams.

This. Strength of competition is an important factor.
App State, Georgia Southern and USA had the most difficult opponents, IMO.

It's pretty obvious. Nebraska isn't better than even Boise State it would appear after watching both games.Georiga brought back 10 starters from a defense that was one of the best in the country last season, and Auburn is due for their bounceback season.

How you got Coastal behind ULM??? You say best showing against a G5, and the very next line is a win against a G5 indy. I'd switch 3&4 and say you got it right.

The reason I had ULM's loss to Memphis by 8 being over Coastal after defeating UMASS, is I'm a homer, and UMASS is horrid. Memphis is thought to be one of, if not the best, G5 team. Hats off to Coastal though. Winning your first game of the year against any FBS team your first year in FBS is awesome. They will win some games this year.

Both ULM and NMSU were much further out if the game than the score indicates. Coastal pulled away and showed that they can run the ball in a way I haven't seen. I'm intrigued to see how their handoffs and misdirection plays work against a more athletic defense; we will get that chance as they have the most difficult Sun Belt schedule this year with games against Southern, App, Arkansas State, and Troy. Each of which have formidable defenses

People will say this week was a referendum on the Sun Belt but the conference had, by far, the most difficult schedule of the G5 conferences.

ULL barley won against FCS. That QB could have ran it in. How is that "met"? They didn't look good.

Thought they would suck this year but not suck so bad that they would lose to an FCS team. Expectation met.

Wasn't ULM getting beat 37-14 before you scored 15 unanswered points in the 4th quarter? Either Memphis put in their back ups or let off the gas?

Disclaimer: I don't do "blank slate" power rankings, and that's why NMSU, App, and GS are where they are.

Fine, you don't do blank slate power rankings. We've won 6 games in a row, tied for the 6th-longest winning streak in FBS.

Flip them if you want -- I didn't watch either game -- but UMass isn't actually a G5 team.

I don't think Memphis put in backups or let off the gas. I think we started playing better and quit shooting ourself in the foot with turnovers. We moved the ball all game and then would fumble. Hopefully the weather was the turnover problem, but we definitely need to work on that. Memphis didn't turn it over like us.

ULM first downs 25 / Memphis 16
ULM total yards 425 / Memphis 415

Memphis was the better team and will be good. We are definitely better, have lots of talent, but have a very tough schedule. Viator's biggest challenge this year is teaching them
how to win. I also think we need to name Garrett Smith the starter until Evans proves himself in game. We would have had a lot better chance Thursday night with Smith in the whole game. Evans is All-American in practice and acrimmage, but hasn't learned to translate it in a game. Smith is way better in game than practice.

I agree with a lot of this, by the way. We made some mistakes in pass protection that never should have happened and might have really cost us against a better team. If someone wants to put Arkansas State or even Troy (damn it Troy!) ahead of us based on performance, or Coastal based on beating a better team this week I wouldn't really squawk. But I've never understood how going out and getting shellacked makes you "powerful." So App, GS and USA have to wait a week.

RE: Week 1 SBC Power Ranking
The biggest question on these power rankings is always is it just based on one week, all games of season, or even preseason expectations. I believe we decided that there are no set rules in these, but helps if you also add to your post how you determine the rankings.

1. Troy- looked good on D
2. Idaho- will get better each week
3. Astate- hung around with a p5
4. App- not impressed at all, still think Troy is better all around
5. Coastal- got the W
6. Sbama- looked ok
7. Nmst-hung around p5
The rest... not very impressed. Losing to fcs underdogs or nearly losing and a couple other beat downs. You could actually throw app st in here too they looked horrible on offense and even worse on d but I think will improve.

Blowing my mind to see people put Troy at 2 for losing by double digits to an unranked G5. Their offense was really bad yesterday.

stAte is the only team that looked reasonably complete yesterday. Everyone else had issues.

Troy losing to Boise is still losing a G5. At least we played well against a P5 and ULM played a good G5 close. Right now everyone is in love with Troy and App.

Hung around with a P5?

We were two drops away from scoring a TD to tie or go for two and a win at Nebraska.

Nice downplay though.

4.App
5. NMSU
6.CCU
7.GS

ULM 10th and below ULL? Really? Explain this one to me. Losing by 8 to maybe the best G5 team compared to should have lost or almost lost to a non ranked FCS team? Than makes sense.
