I was perusing Dandy Don's site and noticed a paragraph on the recent rankings by Baseball America; Tulane #1 and LSU #2. It as gratifying to read Dandy Don advocate for both Tulane and LSU to make it to Omaha. I really enjoy the rivalry when we can show deserved mutual respect. The antagonism stirred by some fans has all but killed the enjoyment of the rivalry.

I agree. I find that the distaste I have for what's left of the rivalry can be traced to one thing. There are two different kinds of LSU fans.

When the #1 ranking in BA came out, a colleague of mine who is an LSU alumnus, former LSU baseball player, and former professional baseball player (made it to the bigs) came by my office to bring it up and talk about it. He asked about the team and how various players were doing. He also said he couldn't see how LSU rated a #2. He thought that they were not that good. Classy guy and very knowledgable about the game. He'll enjoy it if they beat us for sure as he should. He's a Tiger fan.

Then there are the other turds in the office. Not my colleagues. The tigah fans. No college at all. Never set foot on LSU's campus other than to go to a tigah football game. Break their necks to stop by my office when we lose, just to ask how the game went. Never hear a word from them when we win. If they were ranked ahead of us in the preseason polls, I would have definitely received a few visits. Not to run smack mind you, (I'm an officer of the company which might keep them a bit subdued) but to simply talk baseball from their perch above us. Rolls reversed in the polls? It's like they don't even know baseball season is upon us.

It's these guys, and there are many of them, that give LSU a bad name and the rivalry a bad taste. These are not college sports fans. These guys are not 'sports' in the true sense of the word at all. They have no passion for the school they pull for because they never studied there, lived and learned there. They never chased tail there and made friendships there. They have no link. They're just a bunch of schmoes who live vicariously through a college team. These are the "bleeding purple and gold" tigah fans that boo their own team and leave early if they don't like what's going on in the game.

LSU get's, what, 80k to 90k to the football games on a Saturday? Maybe 30% are real Tiger fans. The other 70% give them a bad name.

The rank and file LSU "fan" these days is not worth being around. I'm past the point where I want to spend the night in jail for clocking a loudmouth. It's not worth being around those jerks. If we never played them again, in any sport (including baseball), that would be ok with me.[QUOTE][QUOTE]

1ndabag - if you subbed in "Rice & UT" for "Tulane & LSU", you'd be singing my song!

They've got some good fans (and speaking of LSU, there's a guy on Owlzone who stopped by during the 2002 LSU-Rice supers and never left -- great guy, very well respected, and he has laid the righteous smack down on some trolls.) These are the ones we don't hear enough from.

But the rest of 'em, the "parking-lot alumni"? Uggh.

Yep I bet it's probably the same with most grande state schools. You've got your fans, then you've got those "other guys". Whuddya gonna do?

Welcome to our humble TU board by the way Lmac. It's usually a little quiet in here which works out well if you like to read. :)

Yeah, looks like y'all have some activity in here lately! 04-cheers Glad the board is taking off. The Rice board is hardly used at all, so it's cool to be able to check other folks' boards out.

I couldn't agree more with the post about Tigah fans. The ones that really get to me are the ones that graduated from places like Nicholls, SLU, Northwestern, yet have season tickets to every LSU baseball and football games (no basketball because they aren't winners), members of TAF, and give more to athletics than academics. They talk all high and mighty about how great LSU is, but they never even went there. It's really pathetic.

Also, we have clowns that wear LSU hats, shirts, etc. everyday on campus here. When people ask why they wear the LSU gear, they respond because they love LSU. Yet, if they love LSU, why don't they go there? I've heard Tulane has the same problem we do.

Yes we do. Case in point. I was on campus TODAY working out and this douche was in there with his Natl Champ t-shirt on. I took the opportunity to correct him that they were BCS champs, not natl champs and USC proved who the real #1 team in the country was BOTH years. Anyway, we have that problem as well.

I try to convince those clowns beating OU didn't make them national champs, it made them BCS Champs. The National Championship has always been crowned with the AP poll.

Well, my drinking buddies and I conducted a poll and determined that last year's nationla champ was Miami of Ohio. This year's poll resulted in a tie between Utah and USC. BTW, LSU was disqualified both years for playing ineligible players.

Have to second L-Mac on this one. I'd clarify though that there is a certain element at tu (that's the school in Austin, not the one in Nahlins!) that is/was in the student population at tu that is downright vulgar and obnoxious. From what I've observed from games against ut and against the Baton Rouge bunch, both have their "parking-lot alumni", but the tigers can't hold a candle to ut for the sheer abuse and drunken stupidity dished out by their students. A lot of that is that the ut fans generally just look the other way while LSU has enough good fans that will call 'em out when they are spewing too much swamp gas.

Just my two cents worth - valued at about what you paid for it!

Respectfully disagree. We had a great time at the TU/TU game. But, I guess we would have been treated differently if we were an in-state rival. Not for nothing, there is no group worse than those up the river from us.

I agree with GreenMenace on that one. You get the worst from the Texas guys because you are Rice. When Texas fans visited N.O., I could practically see halos atop their heads.

I often hear fans of other schools who visit Baton Rouge say how "classy" and "nice" LSU's fans are. To them I say, show up wearing a Tulane shirt and then talk to me. It won't be pretty.
