On the way down I was talking to my son and listening to S. Miss vs uk. I said what kind of ******* stupid AD hires someone that plays a control offense that looks like it was made for 1990s after you turn the program around with a fun wide open offense.

Little did I know that is exactly what Western was doing.

So Coach either lied when he gave his vision of the offense he was going to run. Or Todd never asked him...or Todd is a f'ing idiot for hiring someone that is going to run a offense that would make last years Marshall's offense look good.

I personally never been as high on Todd as most Western fans but not in a million years did I believe he would hire a football coach that didn't play a style close to what Western played for 4 years.

As for the offensive line they had to learn a totally different system than the last 3 years...control your man for the short quick passes. Now they have to control and hold the block for a couple more seconds because there's no release...everything is down field 8+ yards.

No release passes to a back
no release passes to a tight end
no release passes on a slot
No screens
No hitting the hot receiver who's man shot the gap

I noticed it the few practices I went to and the spring game...everything was down field and 3 vanilla routes. PREDICABLE. EKU saw that and tee'd off on White.

Don't even want to think about this defense. Western looked like the smaller team. with 5 DP's that looked 5'6 and 140 pounds . Is there another college program running a 4-2-5? When you take out that middle linebacker and bring in a 5th DB on EVERY PLAY....

you are going to give up the middle and 3 yard runs turns into 6 and the same with passes. But if you are going to play that style.....

you better play press coverage with your corners. You should have a safety to cover if you get beat.

The sad thing is our coach seem to be happy with where the defense and offense was heading into this game. So I'm hoping this is one game and a game he thought Western wins easy. And really the game never was in doubt. And he did not want to show Ill the offense he wants to run.

If not Todd made a mistake and one that should get his ass fired if this turns out like it feels it's going to.
Put this into the "Predictable early season overreaction" folder

Did anyone in CUSA look good this week? Short answer, no, this is a wide open race this season....Let's give the staff a few games, if after Sept offense looks like ****, then yes maybe time to be concerned at least for this season...I mean MTSU looked looked like dogshit with almost entire offense back and same staff for years....What's their excuse?

You need an excuse for Middle? How about Vandy has a lot better defense than FCS EKU.

I don't need half a season to see TERRIBLE play calling from the booth. How many times did we throw on first down during the entire game? This was the most conservative predictable play calling since Jimmy Feix ran an offense that consisted of run, run, draw play, punt. Even Elson was more wide open.

In his post game he said something to the effect that to beat a P5 you have to go toe to toe with them. Well that's okay if you have P5 players but I kinda doubt we're loaded with them. Next week will tell a lot. We're facing a terrible Illinois squad and I'm expecting us to get our assses handed to us after watching last night.

Sanford was full of excuses in the post game. Building Eastern up saying a team with an entire new coaching staff makes their biggest jump from year one to year two. We didn't hire him to rebuild anything. He's not inheriting Elson's squad. Sounded like he wanted us to wait for year two with him while blowing Eastern.

I was the first person to ever talk about Xavier Lane last year when I saw him at practice. Sanford went on about how big a loss it was not having him. I love what Lane can bring but he won't be blocking the dee line and he won't be playing defense.

We looked soft and scared. There was ZERO energy on our sideline. You have to be at the game to see that. Not watching on tv. Our coach looked 34 going on 65 with his play calling. No balls at all. I'll still be at all the home games. But I'm gearing up for a very likely no bowl season.

I hope the WKU defense reads this...... powder puff defense was the first thing that comes to mind, half arse tackling and scared to lay a hit. Maybe he told them to not risk injury, put its hard to play at 70% speed if thats the case...... it turns into 40% results. Better the a big jump to week 2. Illinois is not very good...... but neither are we from what i saw..

Side note...... I was impressed with EKU, looked like a very solid FCS team

Souther Miss runs a 4-2-5. Even stayed in it late in the game when KY had a 2 TE set running the wildcat.

Many people thought last season would be the rebuilding year for EKU after losing the longtime QB. But you had almost everyone else back... OL, WR, RB, and Brohm. I was expecting WKU to take a step back this year even if Brohm was still there.

However, with the loss of your coach, who is one of the best that I've seen in CUSA, it wouldn't surprise me if WKU took a little bit bigger step back than I initially thought. You should still have more talent than much of CUSA, but this Southern Miss fans knows all too well what can happen when a new coach comes in and tries to fix what ain't broke. Best of luck!

I think most Western fans were thinking this would be a step back year but with that 9 wins or the very least 8. To tell the true after the opening weekend CUSA had that's still possible. But last night felt like a team that would be fighting for 6-6 the last week. If they are that lucky.

I don't know why freaking ADs don't understand talent in one system does not mean that talent carries over to a whole different type system. It usually doesn't. Any coach Western hired after back to back conference championships and 23 wins was fighting a uphill battle....

but you don't change a system that worked into a boring style of play. I knew it was going to happen when the coach came in and did not try to retain any of the coaches. I knew it was going to happen when he closed all but a couple practices. I knew it was going to happen after seeing a few of those practices and the spring game. I just didn't believe it was going to be Marshall offense predicable/boring (last year). And I let the hype of the excitement from things our coach said all summer...

fooled me into believe different than what my head was telling me.

Now I hope like hell my eyes are playing tricks on me. If not Western is looking at a 2 year roster turnover before talent begins to matches style of play.

SYSTEM.....is the freaking #1 important thing in college football. Every winning programs plays a system and hires to that system. If they don't most rebuild for 2+ years. This is not basketball where "talent" is talent" and you can plug and play and match styles

You know what you can eat? Yeah.

Wtf does Harper have to do with football? You're an idiot for even making the comparison. Sanford is not taking over what Harper was left with. He's taking over what was an offensive machine. Loaded with red shirts. I know what we lost.

I'm just reporting what I SAW last night and my opinion on it. I know you probably weren't at the game were you? Did you even pay and watch it? If you didn't do one of those things then you have zero right to even comment on it. If you weren't there you didn't see the lack of fire on both sides of the ball and the lack of fire on the sideline.

I'm not saying fire the guy. That's not in the discussion. I'm just saying we looked bad in several facets of the game. That's on him and his staff. I know what I saw play calling wise and it was the most conservative offense Western has had in decades.

If he was just hiding his playbook from Illinois I'll be the first to come back and congratulate him. But right now he looks way in over his head. His offensive coordinator was terrible last night. If he continues this way Sanford needs to yank the headset from him and call his own plays. Maybe that is his style though. A good friend of mine is huge Notre Dame fan and he said watching us reminded him of how boring ND has been.

How about you come to a game before commenting.

Agreed it was not good but first game out of the gate no telling how teams will look...Heading to Vegas in morning so no was not at game but will be at at least 3 or 4 this season! One thing concerns me is our OL not our coaching one game in....

You are the classic "water cooler fan" loves to brag about recruiting but never shows up to the actual game to support those players.

One f'ing excuse after another...I got kids. My kids has actives on Saturdays. My dad buy season tickets and pays HAF donation so that counts for me also. The only time you do make it to a game....

if you can work in a NFL or Hockey game in Nashville with it or heading to a Braves game. Not just for the Western game. But you are the very first one to mouth off about others not being there. You think you are the only one that has kids?

Unless your ass in sitting in the seats at a game you don't get "the feel"

If you ever make it to a Western game stop by and tell me any problem you might have with anything I've said. I'm not one of these punk ass people that hide behind a screen. I list where my football and basketball seats are. stop by and say hi and tell me what you think of me or anything I said.

edit: I see from your post above this one "Heading to Vegas" EXCUSE!....you do know there are well over 24 hours between the time Western's game ended and you "Heading to Vegas" on Monday morning. Hell probably like 36 hours. Always a excuse

Funny the 2 guys saying after 1 game our coaches are horrible are same guys who both wanted Harper to remain our bball coach for decades...Before jumping off a cliff maybe we can give them 1 more game.....EKU had UK beat two seasons ago....

He also lives in Lexington. That's a loooong drive. I did it for 5 years. So am I a water cooler fan cause my excuse is that my work schedule has me working every weekend?

edit: I see from your post above this one "Heading to Vegas" EXCUSE!....you do know there are well over 24 hours between the time Western's game ended and you "Heading to Vegas" on Monday morning. Hell probably like 36 hours. Always a excuse

Blah blah blah, yes I am sure you have never missed a WKU game in your life....I am sure when your sons were young you also never had an activity to attend for them instead of a game...Yes no one can drive as far away as you almighty one and be a super fan like you...You are biggest hypocrite on here by far....Sorry with two young kids and a wife I cannot drive roundtrip 5 hours for your liking sweetie...Also none of your damn business what WKu fans do with time, how about spend half of your energy lecturing on the countless UK/UofL fans who are WKU alum who live next door to stadium, that would be better then lecturing a die hard WKUFan like me..

Don't you know no excuses living here, everyone else ignores this loser, guess I need to too...Maybe he will disappear again to jail like a few years ago.......Doesn't matter if you have young kids in several activities...

I'm not ready to call the season a bust. But, I did walk away underwhelmed. EKU certainly was playing with more energy and juice. Their sideline was active, the guys were having fun. We walked off after each time out and quarter with our heads down... no energy.

As they say, biggest improvement comes between game one and game two. We'll need it!

RE: WKU--EKU thread
Step back from the ledge guys. It was quite obvious we called a vanilla game on purpose. I have been to WKU practices this season and they didn't run half of the plays that I have seen them running in practice. If you look up the numbers in S&P, Sanford offenses have always been pretty high up there in near the top of college football.

It was simply us trying to work in the freshman and underclassman to game experience and not give anything away with regards to Illinois next week. Hell Sanford is the same coach who wouldn't tell people our starting kicker from last season Simcox was no longer on the roster this past week because he didn't want EKU to know before the game. If he does that about a kicker against an FCS opponent...don't you think he would do the same to schemes for a Big 10 opponent next week knowing we would still have the talent to beat EKU running basic plays. A friend of mine caught a coach in the hallway after the game heading to the elevator and even that coach said this was just a basic offense game.

Now if things don't improve for next week then you can spit all the fire you want. But maybe until then you should use your heads a bit. Just a thought.

Finally a normal post. Some people on here need take a deep breath or a shot of bourbon. A few FCS teams won over the weekend and many played FBS teams very close. Totally normal, especially with new coaches and conservative play calling. Hide the main offense from future, more important opponents. Heck, we're already listed as an 8 point favorite over Ill.

Y'all sound like us Tech fans after our game vs an instate FCS opponent. I am going to withhold judgement some until after this week. WKU has a very winnable game vs Illinois and Tech has a SEC team at home that certainly can be beaten. This this week will be more telling for both squads. I am of the thought, or at least hopeful, that Tech was being very vanilla with play calling. Maybe the same can be said about WKU.

What do you two jokers mean finally a normal post? On page 2, I said "I don't see that making sense unless we weren't showcasing our true potential to Illinois on purpose. Blowing out EKU does no good if Illinois gets to counter our big calls the next week. So I don't think Sanford (or rather I hope) is going to be vanilla. This guy isn't green, and he's experienced in good offense." So disrespectful.
