Did NMSU just steal a commitment from Grand Canyon?
Early this month, it was announced that Utah guard, Jojo Zamora would transfer from Utah to GCU.

Jojo Zamora Commits to GCU

Well.... it's been 15 days since that report, and it looks like Jojo Zamora is enrolled at New Mexico State.

Nothing official, but looks like Jan's pulled a fast one on Majerle.

Verbal commits says he was only a walk on at GCU too. Weird. If true this would be hysterical. The rivalry grows!

Why would anyone leave Grand Nirvana University and Dan Dan Majerle the Messiah of basketball to go to NMSU?

From Mark Rudi:

Mark Rudi @mrudi19

NMSU men's hoops has added Utah transfer Jojo Zamora, who had committed to Grand Canyon. Zamora will sit one year and then play one year.

Jojo Zamora is enrolled at NMSU and was in Utah's rotation most of last season. Seems like another solid pickup for Chris Jans.

I wonder what changed Zamora's mind about GCU and sent him to NMSU? Well this should be a shot across GCU's bow that Jans is here to compete. Jans is a tough recruiter.

I watched some film on JoJo and he looked to be an athletic finisher around the rim. I was excited to have him on board as a lope but props to NMSU for pulling this one from under us.

Jojo is a nice player who I think resembles a Royce Woolridge type of player. Anytime someone offers you a scholarship you should take it.

Yeah, I think a scholarship verses a walk on was the difference. Not sure why GCU only offered a walk on spot through. Hope he plays well for Jans just not against us!!

B/c he had to sit out a year and they have didn't have an open scholarship spot. Would you rather have a player walk on and then give him a scholarship for 1 year as opposed to 2 years on scholarship for 1 year of playing?

I think NMSU has the same deal with Zamora. NMSU doesn't have a scholarship available for him this school year. In fact, we have 18 players playing or sitting out right now.

1. AJ Harris, SO. (scholarship)
2. Sidy Ndir, SO. (scholarship)
3. Shunn Buchanan, SO. (scholarship)
4. Keyon Jones, JR. (walk-on)
5. Joe Garza, SR (walk-on)
6. Kortrijk Miles, FR (scholarship)
7. Gabe Hadley, FR (scholarship)
8. Zach Lofton, SR (scholarship)
9. Wayne Stewart, JR (scholarship)
10. Jemerrio Jones, SR (scholarship)
11 Johnny McCants, FR (scholarship)
12. Eli Chuha, JR (scholarship)
13. Leston Gordon, JR (scholarship)
14. Jonathon Wilkins, SR (scholarship)
15. CJ Bobbitt, JR (RS transfer)
16. Jabari Rice, FR (red-shirt)
17. Robert Brown, FR (red-shirt)
18. Jojo Zamora, SR (RS transfer)
19. Drake Spence, JR (possible walk-on)

Likely didn't want to push Kenzo off scholarship. That is the move that I would likely end up making if we were adding Jojo on scholarship.

NMSU has no available scholarships but I do know tuition at NMSU is probably cheaper than GCU.

NMSU has two good transfers sitting out this season.

GCUs out of state is roughly 2,000 cheaper than NMSUs. There had to have been something else that got him to go there.

Again I was told by ppl who are in the know that Jojo left GCU as a walk on to nmsu for a scholarship for this year.

GCU tuition is $17,500
NMSU in state $6,729, out of state 21,234

NMSU has 0 scholarships so maybe just the fact playing for a good program like NMSU who has a history of playing in the NCAA Tournament.

People in the know or propaganda to save face? Not trying to be antagonist here, just wondering what the real deal is.

RE: Did NMSU just steal a commitment from Grand Canyon?
Well, obviously Jans gave Zamora a better deal than what he would have received at GCU. He might be on scholarship (if someone is willing to relinquish theirs) or he might be receiving financial aid which makes it cheaper at NMSU. Who knows? All we know is he is enrolled at NMSU now. I am sure Majerle is upset to find out a player who he thought he had locked up (on Aug 11th) before he left for Spain (Aug 14th thru 21st) is now an Aggie (by Aug 25th).
