RE: ECU game weather
ECU appears to be a more pass heavy offense based on last year. I would think rainy conditions play into JMU's hands more. More potential for turnovers too. It would also hurt ecu fan turnout, making it not as loud.

Are these storms the remnants of Harvey making its way east?

No. Harvey is heading north through Kentucky. These are just normal passing showers and t-storms.

Rainy conditions certainly helped at VT. However, there was a lot of other factors there AND...I don't want it to be THAT rainy on Saturday.

RE: ECU game weather
Side note, Terry Bradshaw always said he preferred playing in rainy/icy conditions (and he did a lot during his career in Pittsburgh) because his theory was that those conditions gave an advantage to his passing game. Meaning, his receivers knew where they were going while defenders did not...which (at least according to him) led to defenders slipping around more and opening up his receivers. Take that FWIW.

I hope the game is played in as dry conditions as possible. Yes, for selfish reasons as a fan in the stadium. But equally important, we are the favorites. I believe we have the better team. I prefer ECU not get any equalizing factors to help them in any way. I assume Houston in prep has had his QB's and receivers throwing/catching some wet balls this week just in case.

Bring on the rain, at least then it won't be 100 degrees in the stands (I realize it's not going to be that hot anyway). As long as everything passes by Sunday as I check into my OBX cottage.

RE: ECU game weather
it's always common to think that rain hurts passing games, but it's really not true. sure, the ball is slippier, but it also really hurts the defense. hard for D-linemen to get explode out of their stance to rush the passer, and hard for DBs to make cuts since they don't know where the WRs are going.

edit: just saw Wear Purple made the same point about the WRs.

exactly what I was thinking. rain doesn't mean we'll lose, but I don't see it necessarily as a good thing.

I seem to recall us playing an FBS team where it rained and we did pretty well.
I would also say we are a much better team this year.

Regardless, I don't see the rain bothering our team. If we were a finesse team I'd be far less confident.

That year our offense had questions and our D was our strength, kind of like this year.

Our offense had about 5,000 more questions in 2010 than we have this year. That defense wasn't coming right off of a championship good.

While the lack of championship is true, the 2010 D was a great defense, perhaps the best ever at JMU. 162 points given up all season against a CAA schedule and VT.

I'll be curious to see how this year's D stacks up to those stats. I should look up ppg allowed in the post-2004 JMU world.

RE: ECU game weather
2004 – 17.9 ppg
2005 – 15.3 ppg
2006 – 16.8 ppg
2007 – 22.1 ppg
2008 – 23.1 ppg
2009 – 18.9 ppg
2010 – 14.7 ppg
2011 – 19.6 ppg
2012 – 21 ppg
2013 – 24.1 ppg
2014 – 29 ppg
2015 – 28.7 ppg
2016 – 21.2 ppg

Mickey really did have some good defenses. Some of his "worst" years were 07 and 08 when I'm sure the offense scored too quickly and the defense had to defend more drives throughout a game and were more gassed.
2011-2013 was really a consistent decline as mickey's tenure ended. Everett managed to make that trend even worse with some historically bad defensive teams in his two seasons.
It's impressive to see Mike Houston improve our defense by 7.5 ppg in a single season, which was the best defensive performance since 2012.

let's not forget, the game has changed a lot in the last 5-10 years.

back in MM's days, these hurry up offenses were virtually non existent.

Now, everyone does it. the majority of teams are playing fast. That means, more plays per game and thus, more scoring.

I still maintain that 2010 team had a special D and if we had an even passable O we would have been playoff bound. I mean ****, we held VT (albeit on a rainy day) to like 50 less points than our average against them.

Well, not anymore. The line is back up and now is a pick em.

Perhaps the odds maker did a closer review and is now factoring in the 6 suspensions?

Yep. I think mainly the Kloo and Alls suspensions + 2 season ending injuries

Rain like we had against Tech doesn't hinder the passing game very much at all nor have much effect on the outcome. However, that rain at Liberty absolutely altered the way the game was played and could have easily allowed the lesser team to prevail.

RE: ECU game weather
Prefer dry weather because I think rain tends to slow things down and make it more a battle of the lines/trenches. That could negate Schor's ability to make an impact on the game. Maybe we would/could go to a multi-back run option in those circumstances, but it still feels like a more one dimensional game with significant rain.
