UAB Football
Was there any discussion of us playing our first game this weekend? Maybe there was, maybe there wasn't, but I feel like if we were able to play this week and have the whole state to ourselves for our return it would have been very beneficial. I know schedules are hard to make and all, just wondering if anyone knows if this weekend was ever in consideration.

The first week is regulated by the NCAA, no team can play before next weekend.

RE: UAB Football
There are five FBS games scheduled for this Saturday (10 more teams than none).

Oregon State at Colorado State
Portland State at BYU
Hawai'i at UMass
South Florida at San Jose State
Stanford vs. Rice (Sydney, Australia)

Playing this weekend was certainly a possibility.

Teams can play this weekend. I know Rice plays tomorrow and JSU plays Chattanooga in Montgomery. SJSU has a game and there are some Thursday night games. Should be a few more Saturday.

Had more to do with not having an open date after the first game.

I thought he meant the NCAA picks which few teams can play this weekend. If not, I really think we missed an opportunity not finding away to play this weekend.

Can you imagine the conversation about playing the first game before students start classes? All you-know-what would break loose.

Be interesting to see how the students react and show up for the games. The last game was played before most of them were out of high school.

I believe only teams that play Hawai'i or travel overseas can start a full week early.

This.

Nope not true. Oregon state plays Colorado State, Portland State plays BYU, South Florida plays San Jose State, and Hawaii plays at UMASS. You can play week 1 but most teams choose not to.

RE: UAB Football
The NCAA says that if you play at Hawaii, you can play a 13th game that season to cover the expense of traveling too Hawaii.

There are only 13 weeks in the season, and it's not fair to make teams play 13 games in a row, so the NCAA lets those teams play a week early. The NCAA doesn't make those teams only schedule othe Hawaii opponents because that would be impossible to schedule, so they can play anyone who they want to schedule and those teams can also play a week early, but don't get a 13th game.

So, let's test this hypothesis.

CSU plays at Hawaii
BYU plays at Hawaii
San Jose plays at Hawaii
Hawaii, why they get to play 13 games every year for the same travel expense reasons

By George, I think we are on to something here!

Jacksonville State plays Chattanooga. Neither play Hawaii. I don't think Rice and Stanford play Hawaii either.

Pretty sure four other FCU matchups Saturday and Sunday.

RE: UAB Football
FCU level schools play by different rules.
Rice and Stanford don't get a 13th game, but since they are playing in Sydney Australia the NCAA gave each team an extra bye week to compensate for the travel, which is why they are opening a week early

You don't have to be a smart a$$, but you could be right about the NCAA allowing an extra game to cover travel expenses. It's interesting that San Diego State and Fresno State both play at Hawaii and don't play 13 games.

You don't have to play the 13th game, you are just allowed to. Schools with more money than scruples have been known to take advantage of the rule in seasons where they are banned from post season play by scheduling away games at Hawaii for a 13th game and treating it as a bowl game for their players.

Hawai'i at UMass? That's insane. They won't quite travel halfway around the world...
