Word is Richard Irvin has not enrolled nor is attending classes for the Spring sememster at Tulane. He has officially become a transfer from Tulane. It appears that Harvard is the beneficiary.

Wow. I guess I should've seen that coming. He saw the writing on the wall and didn't want to play second banana to Ricard for the next two years.

He's a good qb and should burn it up in the Ivy league. I wish him well.

I think he was feeling more pressure from Elliot than from Ricard.

What do you mean? The only pressure Elliot can put on him is to take over the #2 spot. Either way both of them would be riding the pine the next two years barring the unforeseen.

The boy probably wanted to play. Ricard is in his way of that, not Elliot.

Elliott is in the way. Even after Ricard graduates or goes pro, Irvin was still going to be riding the pine. And, the strong possibility exists that Irvin would have been 3rd string in '05.

Elliot's in the way of nothing. As I stated, second or third string in '05, what's the difference? He's still riding the pine. He's got three years of eligiblilty left and knows he'll spend the next two behind Ricard. Ricard going pro? I like the guy but you're getting ahead of yourself.

I think the pressure to leave in order to play comes from Elliot. Should Ricard have the kind of year next year that a helthy Ricard is capable of, he would likely opt for the draft. That would leave Irving sitting the bench behind Elliot for the remainder of his college career. If Ricard were to stay through his senior year, he would be followed by Elliot, leaving Irving on the bench.

I don't want to argue it to death because frankly it's not that big an issue.

You guys are assuming quite a bit:

Ricard will go pro after his junior year? Based on what? He played well for three or so games in his first season?

Elliot will automatically beat out Irvin whenever Ricard is out of the picture? Again, based on what? Elliot has yet to take a snap in a college game and I'd be willing to bet that you guys have yet to see him play at all.

Irvin is a player who wants to play. RICARD is in his way. He had his chance to beat him out last season but lost the job. Ricard went down on injury late in the season and opened up an opportunity for Irvin. Despite Irvin's performance in relief of Ricard he understands he will not be the starter in 2005.

That is the writing on the wall. Elliot has nothing to do with it.

Don't subscribe to the Picayune. Just saw this online. Irvin transfers because he didn't want to sit behind Ricard (smart move by him, imo).

Irvin transfers:
"Lester (Ricard) did a great job; Lester's their guy, and that's fine," Irvin said. "But I have to take care of myself, also."

Irvin, who will be a sophomore this fall, said the fact that Ricard, the starting quarterback until he broke his right wrist in the second half of the Army game, was only a year ahead of him also played a part in his decision, as did the fact that Harvard is a Division I-AA school, meaning he won't have to sit out a season before playing.
