RE: Navy at FAU
But playing Navy and VT (and hopefully winning a few) does build our brand regionally. While we boast of drawing from all 50 states and being a "national university" in the eyes of USNWR, that is based mostly on the number of PhDs awarded. We really are a pretty large regional university and anything that builds press and prestige from NY to Ga is good in my book. Playing Navy would do that.

The plan when the Rhinos were supposed to come was to tear down the hotel across the street by Greyhound and put the arena there. I still think that would be the best plan. Especially if the city is able to redevelop the area next door.

The city hasn't been too logical though with planning.
The Bus depot should have been located closer to the baseball stadium. That way it would have been a Bus / Tide / Amtrak facility...

RE: Navy at FAU
Playing Navy at this point does nothing for us at the current size of Foreman and possibly even Foreman 2.0. We have no tickets to usher local military and their families to Foreman Field. The 500 or 1000 tickets Navy would get most likely would go to the top brass in the area. If we had a larger stadium with 1000's of seats available it would be great to have the military and their families come out for a game.

RE: Navy at FAU
Classic example of having trouble with an unbiased view of where our program really is.
Navy has very little to gain by coming to ODU's FCS level stadium. It just isn't even remotely interesting. They don't even go to play the Aztec, who have a huge Naval Base community and a MUCH different level of historical accomplishment and football commitment.
Good for FAU that they open with them. If ODU ever decides to even build what they have, perhaps Navy would find us a little bit interesting. Perhaps even interested in having us join them as upstart conference mates. Until then, let's look forward to enjoying our comfortable cushioned 22k seat stadium. I doubt it will even be impressive to the USNA even then.

ODU's FB schedule has more P5 schools on it than any other G5, except one and that's ECU. I wouldn't trade schedules with FAU, but would like to get a game with Navy.

Not necessarily disagreeing, but based on your logic how do you explain the FAU game?

Maybe or maybe not
Lots of pretty girls for the Midshipment to see "eye candy"
Lots of retired officers down in FL. Navy looking for booster money from them old farts.
Lots of seats available at FAU.
Couple Navy bases.
You're right I dont know why Navy would play FAU

RE: Navy at FAU
There's no Navy base in South Fla, closest one is Jacksonville and that's almost 6 hrs away. Navy personal retire were they can get on base and get health care. Not many in South Fla, the cost of living is too high. Northern Fla, there's quite a few.
As far as fans traveling to Annapolis, ODU would bring a great crowd. Gameday in Annapolis, is one of the best. The hospitality and pageantry, is second to none.
My guess Navy was looking for an easy W.

Agreed, it is also a chance to recruit talent rich S. Florida.

FAU joined the Sun Belt in 2005.

Thanks Aggie!
I think we'll score long term games with schools like Navy in time

RE: Navy at FAU
I think sometimes we read too much into scheduling decisions, or believe that every OOC game must represent a significant philosophy, or multiple philosophies, when, to paraphrase Freud, sometimes a noncon game is just a noncom game.
Navy's going to Marshall in 2023 as the second half of a home-and-home. Unless they have some insider info on global warming and polar ice cap melt, or their AD took Deep Impact a little too seriously, they have no Navy business in southwestern West Virginia.
They're clearly not looking to reinvent the wheel with their OOC schedule. Marshall, FAU and Hawaii are the only FBS opponents, other than the indefinite games against the Army-Air Force-Notre Dame trio.
Having the Navy connection helps for ODU, but at the same time, it's not as though Navy is putting base proximity high on the list of considerations for road games.

Got to wonder what their thinking. They should have a few alumni at the world's largest naval base.

I will be one this May.
Wife is ODU grad / Navy Vet.
Considering 1/4 (Around 5,000) students are Military affiliated, that is ALOT of ODU / Navy folks that graduate every year.
