I hope I'm wrong but I don't expect much from Elmore this year. Cacok's freshman year I felt like the potential was there. I haven't seen it with Elmore yet.

When have you seen Elmore play beyond the few minutes he was on the court at the beginning of last year? Cacock was definitely more "college ready" from a physical standpoint right out of the gate. Elmore isn't a big man bruiser, he's an outside shooter. I didn't get a chance to see him on the floor for long enough periods of time or for many games, so I have no idea what he can or can't do a year later.

At 6'9", he can shoot and score from anywhere. But, he is really only equipped to play power forward, not center. So, he will need to be paired with a big man at center when he's in the game.

I think Cacok could have been a stud his freshman year but couldn't stay out of foul trouble. It's pretty amazing how much he improved in this area over one year.

Elmore may be good someday but I didn't see much last year (granted he didn't play much). He didn't seem quick enough on defense and didn't hit shots from outside. I hope he improves a ton...with confidence maybe he can contribute. I'd love to see him take Marcus Bryan's minutes!

My contention with Elmore is that coming from a rural 2A high school that didn't play against very good HS competition, then transitioning to D1 college basketball where the game speeds up a lot (a huge jump by itself), and on top of that adjusting to a style of play that is super fast even by D1 standards and is built for 4 perimeter players and one athletic big man who can really run the floor...was going to look somewhat lost, bewildered and overmatched. I saw enough on his highlights before he came to UNCW to think he was going to be a guy that would really help us....reasonably athletic for his size with a few post moves and could definitely shoot. I think he will absolutely contribute this year, and could become a really good player down the road.

Let's not forget Elmore played on both the Under Armour and Adidas Circuits. This link has him with some darn good competition. http://www.slamonline.com/college-hs/hig...PyipigC.97

RE: Surprises with the lineup.
Elmore might fit in the system now but he had virtually no chance to play in a Keatts system and I had serious doubt that he would stay at UNCW. He can shoot when open but has a tough time using his size inside with no interior skills to speak of. That could change now with Joe Wolf coaching the bigs they have to be better than they were. Keatts came from a system that places zero emphasis on a inside game and he took it to another level. Time will tell but he at least has a shot to develop now.

Agreed. I figured he would transfer too.

RE: Surprises with the lineup.
I always wondered why Keatts brought him in to begin with. He obviously wasn't a good fit in the Keatts system and the writing was on the wall that he wasn't going to see floor time. Elmore was probably happier than anyone that Keatts went to NCSU.

RE: Surprises with the lineup.
I don't know if Keatts planned for a four guard line up from the beginning. Flemmings kind of fell into place along with Bryce and he wanted them both on the floor. Then, Cacock turned out to be an athletic beast and voila', Elmore has no place to go.

Don't forget, Keatts hung on to playing CJ Gettys till the end and he didn't fit his system at all.

Good point. I think Getty's shear size and ability to clog the paint played more into that than his positional skill level. Had he been Elmore's size I don't think he would have been on the court much either.

All great points 82. If this is the staff I think it is, this entire squad is going to develop. There is a lot of talent on our team and I think this staff will know how to capitalize on this talent.

You have to think that we have to have a better shot at recruiting higher quality big men due to the presence of Joe Wolf.

When was the last time UNCW had a coach that had any particular expertise in developing bigs?

RE: Surprises with the lineup.
The last time we had a big to coach the bigs was probably during Mel Gibson's tenure as head coach. Rick Holdt (sp?) was Mel's assistant. RH was then a recent ncsu player & grad. He was only around for a couple of years. He had been a forward at state. There was also Mike Winnecki (sp?) under Wainwright and Brownell. Mike had been a forward at richmond. No former centers as I recall.
I can't remember a big as big man coach since. Although my memory could be off.

RE: Surprises with the lineup.
Elmore was a raw freshman big man last year. And what I see is a four year practice player or a player with a lot of potential. Maybe we have another Callahan in the making. Coach McGrath apparently has seen a lot of growth in him. We are deep enough to take a chance that he may be a force by his junior or senior year. How about let's lay off the kid and see what happens. What I saw last year was a kid who was thinking too much on the court. Maybe he's now learning to let the game come to him.

"Thinking too much on the court." Is that like Yogi Berra's statement that "You can't hit and think at the same time"?

Another accurate assessment by Yogi. If you're thinking at all about your mechanics when you're at the plate, you're screwed.

Thinking about what kind of pitch you're about to get and where it will be located is acceptable, but once the pitch is on the way, it's all muscle memory.

That's definitely a great way to describe what we saw last year. I'm pumped to see what our new system brings to the table and get this season going. We've definitely seen a lot of players in Seahawk jerseys in the past develop into strong players when we thought they weren't going to make it as freshmen. Hoping Elmore feels that confidence and gives us another "X Factor" teams have to worry about.

From the little I have seen of the 7 footer Kalina on SnapChat, he reminds me of Gettys in his athleticism.

He's a bit more athletic than Gettys and more active.
