So is Liberty joining the Big East for a few sports?
I was in Lynchburg for a few days and spent a lot of time at the campus. Driving around I noticed that Liberty was hanging Big East Conferences banners. I see that they are doing Field Hockey from a Google search. Are they also trying to get in for Baseball, Volleyball, and Soccer?

Are you sure they weren't Big South banners?

They are only affiliate members in Field Hockey.

I don't think they can shop around for affiliate membership if their "home" conference (Big South/where they play men's BB) offer those sports. I could be wrong here though. The BS offers all those other sports you mentioned.

There a handful of schools that are 1-sport affiliates in conferences despite their home conference sports sponsoring the sport. Outside of the Pioneer Football League, I am aware of maybe 7-8, but I don't have that info in front of me.

One hundred percent sure it was Big East.

Didn't know if it was only just for field hockey though.

The Big West allows for schools to be affiliates in up to three sports. Not sure about the Big East. I'm guessing each conference is different regarding affiliates?

doubtful. At that point they're practically a full member.

There's a lot more conference affiliation than one might think:
Mizzou is in the MAC for Wrestling
San Diego St is in the AAC for field hockey and PAC for Soccer
Air Force, Wyoming are in the Big 12 for wrestling
UNLV plays soccer in the WAC
Kentucky, South Carolina and New Mexico are in CUSA Soccer
Boise is in the PAC 12 for wrestling.--if they don't drop wrestling, which I heard they might.

Providence was in America East for volleyball, so if Liberty found themselves homeless, that may be an option.

Boise is going to drop wrestling and replace it with baseball.

I know WVU plays in the MAC for men's soccer since the Big XII doesn't sponsor it...

Why wouldn't Liberty go independent in MBB? Is that even possible? With their kind of money they could hire a real good coach and seriously upgrade their schedule. Who knows, they could possibly be in the running for NCAA at large bids on a yearly basis. And, as a bonus, they would get to keep all tournament payout money for themselves.

RE: So is Liberty joining the Big East for a few sports?
. . . If they make the tournament. There are realistically about 250 schools competing for the 6-8 at-large bids not given to the P5 in a typical year. They would be better off taking the steady $100K to $150K they get every year as a member of the Big South. That number would increase in the event someone wins a tournament game, or someone does snag an at-large berth.

Sure one NCAA appearance every 9 to 10 years might break even mathematically, but that's a big gamble when a school realistically has to be one of the best 25 teams in the country - some teams with an RPI of 28 or 29 have had their bubble burst.

Big South is a pretty good baseball conference.

No because there are only around 32 at large picks available out of around 356 schools. You need a conference so your school has a hypothetical shot to go to the NCAA Tournament through the conference tournament auto bid. That's why there is 0 out of 356 Independent basketball programs.

Why would the Big East ever want Liberty for anything? I wouldn't touch that university with a 1,000 foot pole.
