I don't think San Antonio traffic is that bad. There are some places with issues but overall it's pretty good.

Where you are stationed will make a big difference in your commute and where you might want to look. I'm not real familiar with the east side which is where Randolph and Fort Sam are closest to. Lackland and the old Kelly are on the west side along with Brooks and Camp Bullis. There are many places at a wide variety of prices on the west side. The Dominion will be a little expensive for your military. I live one hill NW of Fiesta Texas in Crownridge. It is a very convenient community with homes built in the mid 80s to just a few years ago. Traveling west on 1604 from the NW I-10 1604 intersection has many very nice homes at varying price ranges. 1604 loops around to HWy 90 which is a short jump to Lackland. Along the way is Helotes on Bandera Rd which is a nice community.

Events you might want to partake - Fiesta about 2 weeks long with many events along the way such as river parade - Rodeo with numerous events such as the cowboy breakfast

Food

Mexican - El Mirasol in the alon off NW Military and on Blanco Rd inside 1604, Chachas on Bandera Rd just inside loop 410
Pizza - Sorrentos on Broadway in Alamo Heights, Lucianos in the Shops at La Cantera
Itallian - Scuzzis 1604 and Military Hwy, Tui Steppe 1604 and Braun
Chinese - Ding How 410 and Calahan
Mongolian BBQ - Hu Hot I-10 and DeZavala
Upscale - Tre Enotica Artisans Alley off Bitters Rd, Battallion S Alamo, Sustenio I-10 and La Cantera Pkwy, Piatti same location in Aelon, Gigga on the Banks downtown near river walk
Cajun - Pappadeaux
Great breakfast tacos - Aguas Caliente 1604 just west of Babcock next to Hills and Dales where you can get a nice brew

Quote:The San Antonio metropolitan area is fortunate to have one of the most comprehensive urban freeway systems in North America. In fact, Bexar County has one of the largest systems of state highways in the nation and one of the highest ratios of freeway miles per capita in the US. In 2014, there were 1,004 centerline miles and 3,384 lane miles of state-maintained roadways in Bexar County. Approximately 256 centerline miles and 1,900 lane miles of that total were freeways. A study by the Surface Transportation Policy Project in 1998 ranked San Antonio's highways as the best among the largest US urban areas.

Minor League Hockey - Iguanas...wait scratch that Rampage.

Don't forget about the Alamobowl and Seniorbowl.

i went through a hockey jersey phase and bought an iguanas one...love that jersey!

The city is booming & infrastructure sucks. Depends on your price range. Good gated neighborhoods in Stone Oak & Dominion is probably the best. That's where Greg Pop , manu, George Strait live among others. 600-25million.

I like a place called Terra Mont right behind La Cantera our outside mall, and utsa & Valero HQ. It's also across from Medtronic, & the Rim which is a really upscale area.

I've been looking at the New Braunfels area. Traffic bad out that way?

It can be if you are commuting into San Antonio daily. Traffic in I-35 is heavy during the day, even in New Braunfels.

The 410 / I-35 interchange is a parking lot every single day. Try coming from the airport area and trying to get on I-35, say, every single day at about 5 pm.

RE: OT: UTSA Fans
The traffic is each persons perspective. I used to travel a lot (a whole lot) with my former job. When you compare San Antonio to Dallas, Houston, Austin, LA, Atlanta, New York, DC, San Francisco (and all their respective metro areas). San Antonio has no where near a traffic issue, in fact I'd say it's downright non-existent. Yes there's traffic during rush hours, but it clears up quick. I've never been in a rush hour type jam at 7:00pm on or after 9:00am. Try getting across town at any of the other cities at those times, it's miserable. As was stated above, city planners have done a great job with the highway system here. San Antonio doesn't have traffic issues. You want bad traffic and poor city highway planning, take a quick trip up the road to Austin. The planners there should have been taken out and flogged for what they didn't do there. That city is a mess.

I totally disagree. I've lived in a few cities you've mentioned and my brother lives in DC which has some of the worst traffic. San Antonio has an awful problem on the north side 1604/10 1604/281 1604/Bandera.

That's why they just approved a 5 year construction plan on 281. They are building too many high density housing with two Lane highways.

They can't develop 1604 due to environmental lawyers . San Antonio is the only major city without HOV lanes & was awarded nearly 100m dollars out of 1 billion to large congested cities. Just look it up and see all the projects that will be changing our highways.

I think I10 will get HOV lanes. They were talking about it. It just has to be official.

RE: OT: UTSA Fans
This thread has apparently evolved into a traffic thread. Having lived in San Antonio for about a decade, and now living in the Houston area, I can tell you Houston traffic is much worse. And if you don't believe me, US News ranked the cities by worst traffic, and Houston was the only city in the top ten from Texas, coming in at #4.

Meanwhile, Business Insider has Austin (where my younger brother lives) as the worst in Texas, coming in at #15 in the country. Forbes has Houston at #9 in the country. The Washington Post has Houston at #6.

So in Texas, it seems to me that it comes down to Houston and Austin, with Houston getting the distinction from most reporting on the subject. San Antonio isn't mentioned anywhere.

I've commuted by bike a couple of times with some help from public transportation. Wish I could do the full commute by bike but SA is just so bike unfriendly. I bet hipster cities like Denton and Austin are much friendlier.
