Exclamation C-USA Lone Star Champships: North Texas
This is not the ideal way to start a traveling trophy, but we do what we can...

C-USA is home to 33% of the FBS programs in the state of Texas. I have long thought there should be a traveling trophy that recognizes the best Texas team within our western division... something like a title belt, that can change hands throughout the season. After 4 seasons, I think we have enough data to establish where this fictitious title should start.

After reviewing the data, it is clear Rice and UTSA have had the most success against the other C-USA Texas programs, both going 7-5 over the first 4 seasons of this configuration. And, neither have a losing record against any of the other C-USA Texas programs.

I found this on the internet. It works for this fictitious title.

[Image: ?u=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FG8B5UBu.png&f=1]

On October 21 Rice and UTSA will play in San Antonio. The teams may not fly the above flag in the end zone, and the winning team may not run and claim it at the conclusion of the game, but the winning fans can add this "Come and Take It" flag to their sig, until they lose it to another C-USA Texas team. I will use this thread to keep track of which C-USA Texas program has the rightful claim. Post a reminder of when the flag is on the line. And, this will also serve as the official "Look at us... We are the Best in Texas" thread.

Good luck to both Rice and UTSA. I'm sure we will enjoy a fun and exciting game. Hope you Texas fans enjoy. 04-cheers

So far North Texas is in last place at 4-8. UTEP is in third with an even record of 6-6. By Oct 21st UTEP could be tied with RICE at 7-6. There could be a three way tie for 1st if North Texas beats UTSA the prior week.

I envisioned this starting by awarding the flag to the fan base that wins this season's Rice@UTSA game, on Oct. 21st. To get the title, a Texas fan base's team would have to beat whichever one is holding the flag. Depending on who has the title and when your team plays them, there could be seasons when a Texas team doesn't get an opportunity to play for the title. I liken it to the number 1 contender getting the run around in boxing.

If Rice were to win on the 21st, then UTEP would not get to play for the title this season. But, If UTSA were to win, UTEP would have a shot at the title on Oct. 28th.

If UTSA were to win, North Texas would not have a shot at the title unless UTEP were to beat the Runners on the 28th. Then North Texas would have a chance to win it on Nov. 11th. If UTEP lost to UTSA, then North Texas would have to chance to play for the title, even if we has beaten UTSA on Oct. 14th. If Rice wins, and beats UTEP too, then North Texas would play for the title on Nov. 25thto end the regular season.

Not perfect, but the best I could come up with.

Um..."Come and take it" is already UTSA's motto. Nice try though.

Oh ok I had something completely different in mind. I figured the team with the best overall record vs Texas CUSA teams would be the champion. Until another team earns a better winning percentage then they become champions.

Your way could work to award the first flag but only if RICE beats UTEP on 9/9. IMO the first "championship game" should be between the clear #1 vs #2.

Assuming UTEP won on 9/9 and UTSA won on 10/14 then that would pit UTSA (8-5) vs RICE (7-6) for the first flag. As a Miner fan I don't think that's fair since we would also have an identical 7-6 record and a fresh victory over the supposed "#1 contender." If UTEP won on 9/9 and UTSA lost on 10/14 then that would make the "championship game" a 7-6 UTSA vs a 7-6 RICE once again not fair for UTEP to be snubbed holding the same 7-6 record.

If RICE beats UTEP then they improve to 8-5 and the outcome between UTSA vs North Texas wouldn't matter. Since a loss puts UTSA at 7-6 and still the #1 contender ahead of a 6-7 UTEP team. Of course a win makes UTSA 8-5 and it would become an undisputed matchup between #1 vs #2.

What do you think of my method for crowning the first champion?

It needs to be retroactive since UTEP had the best record vs C-USA Texas teams last year!

If UTEP beats Rice on Sept. 9th, we can talk about figuring out another way. If UTEP loses the game, I'm okay with not having the title on the line on 9-14, when we play UTSA. I can wait to see who wins between UTSA and Rice.

Serious question, do you think UTSA invented that motto? Or were even the first football team to use it?

in the approaching two decades that I've been a MT fan, we've had a half dozen or so mottos, half of which I've seen used elsewhere(some, like "All in", in more than one place).

You should send your original trophy idea (or was it a flag?) from a year or so ago to your AD and cc the other CUSA AD's in Texas. Its a really good idea to create some extra interest in the Tx vs Tx CUSA games.

No, UTSA did not create the 'come and take it' motto but were the first Texas FBS team to coin it. We might as well call it the Texas to the Top Trophy.

C-USA Texas Traveling Trophy... Almost
I like this idea a lot.
I like the "title belt" method... once you have the trophy... it's yours until someone takes it from you.

But if it's based on the 2013 configuration... we need to go all the way back to 2013 and follow the title belt from there.

What say you to this:

At the start of 2013: RICE begins the season as undisputed holder of the trophy. Why?
1. At the time, Rice had won its last meeting against all three of the others (2 of those were OOC)
2. If a similar trophy had existed among TX CUSA schools in 2012, RICE would have been the incumbent trophy holder (by beating SMU, who'd previously beaten UH in 2012).

2013 was a great year for the trophy with three of the teams in contention for the CUSA West.
Rice retains it against UTSA and UTEP, but loses the trophy (and the inside track on the division title) on Halloween Night at UNT.
When UTSA later beats UNT, it clears the way for RICE to take the division title. But UTSA finishes 2013 with the Texas Trophy!

In 2014, UTSA opens as trophy holder and defends its honor by destroying UH in TDECU (thank you, that was something Rice didn't do against UH OOC as Trophy holder in 2013). But in UTSA's first trophy defense, UTEP wrangles it away with a 34-0 shutout. UTEP defends against UNT, but hands over to RICE on 11/21. Rice ends 2014 as trophy holder.

In 2015, Rice defends against UNT but loses the trophy to UTEP the first week of November (I have to admit I'm surprised UTEP held it twice) and then UTEP defends against UNT to hold the title after 2015.

In 2016, UTEP defends against UTSA (52-49!) but loses trophy back to RICE on the season's penultimate week.

So if you all agree... this is how it should be. Everyone's had it at least once. And it's on the line in week two at UTEP.

If RICE wins then we take it to TDECU to show it off to our former CUSA TX pals and hopefully repeat UTSA's success there... and UTSA would be next in line on Oct 21.

IfUTEP wins then UTSA is still next in line but one week later on Oct 28.
Either way, UNT won't play for it against UTSA Oct 7 but might have the opportunity in November if UTEP or RICE still have it then.

Trophy Holders:
2013: RICE, UNT, UTSA
2014: UTSA, UTEP, RICE
2015: RICE, UTEP
2016: UTEP, RICE

More good ideas. If this ever went viral the traveling trophy should be a belt buckle. I know a lot of real Texas cowboys and they take their belt buckles seriously.

2016: UTEP, RICE

Retroactive is fine by me.... If there are no serious objections, Rice has the Title.

Rice fans feel free to display this graphic in your signatures, hang a banner of it at your tailgates, and or wave it at your stadiums on game day.

Enjoy it while you can, you won't be keeping it. 04-cheers

The Title goes up for grabs on Sept. 9th, when Rice travels to El Paso to face UTEP.
