15 Days to Kickoff... a big time D-Line transfer and the future at QB
We are now down to 2 weeks out from the eve of toe meeting leather in Greenville...WOOHOO!...
Already featured earlier in the countdown before he had #15 assigned to him, Ron'Dell Carter is a welcome addition to the defensive line as he transfers in from Rutgers. Ron'Dell is of course the brother of Dukes defender, Robert Carter. Should be a great season for the Carter Family watching both of their guys in purple. Ron'Dell is a Computer Science major from Baltimore. Good luck to Ron'Dell this season and welcome.

and...
Gage Moloney is a big February signee from Rock Hill, SC, just outside of Charlotte. He led his Northwestern HS team to a 4A state title his Junior season. Being able to land a QB who was named "Mr. Football" in the state of SC is a major win for Coach Houston and staff. Moloney was originally an Ohio U. commit before changing allegiance to the Good Guys. When watching his film online (plenty of it at YouTube, btw), my first reaction is he's "a left-handed Bryan Schor". Sees the field really well. Can run with it when needed and very accurate with his throws. I expect - barring no injuries knock on wood - Moloney will be redshirted preferably this season and then he has a legit shot at being our QB for the next 4 years. He should definitely bring a lot of good competition to the scout team at minimum and help prep our defense every week. Good luck to Gage and welcome to the JMU Family. Very excited about watching this young man develop in the coming years.

glad you said this. I think a lot of people are expecting Baby Giraffe to assume that role, but if I was a betting man, I would put my money on Gage. Mr. Football in SC is a big, big deal. that's all I have to go on, admittedly. I also worry that Cole is always going to have that really thin frame. I hope we can keep both guys at JMU for the rest of their eligibility, but that might be tough.
if he does start for 4 years, when was the last QB we had that did that? he could do some major damage to the JMU record books in that case, especially if Houston sticks around. getting ahead of myself, I know. Just really excited to see this kid play.

i knew it happens, but never realized how many players share jersey numbers until WP started this exercise.

2015
This happened...
...and this...
...and this...
At SMU, Vad Lee accounted for 5 Dukes touchdowns while rushing for 276 yards (by a QUARTERBACK!) and threw for 289 yards. That performance was the first time a D1 player (D1A or D1AA) rushed and threw for more than 275 yards in a game. Think about that.

What's interesting in this case is that #15 was Moloney's high school number. And, Ron'Dell Carter is only a R-So. so he has 3 seasons to wear the number.
As has been pointed out before in previous threads, with them on different sides of the ball, it is possible they both could wear #15 -- though you'd think something will give one way or the other. We'll see...

Ron'Dell wore #90 in HS and at Rutgers. That's currently being worn by Rondre Knowles-Tener (redshirt FR). I suspect Ron'Dell will switch to a # up in the 90's next season...93, 94, and 96 will all be available.

Cole looks like the solid #2, I was impressed with his throws in today's scrimmage. He is still thin, but looks stronger. During the hot humid preseason, I am sure it is a challenge for him to keep on what ever weight gain he may have had. Maloney looks like he would benefit from a redshirt year IMO.

The more competition the better. Cole looked like a great replacement when needed last year (after opening jitters), but Gage looks great on film, too. I'm sure they'll both get their chance to prove themselves.

Ahhh the dreaded left-handed reverse spiral. This may have a bigger effect on broken fingers at WR than the coriolis effect on Aussie Harry O'Kelly's punts.
