Will the Arkansas State Red Wolves Defeat Its Out-of-Conference Curse?
Why the Red Wolves’ horrible, terrible, no good OOC record sucks for the Sun Belt.

It comes down to a simple question: “How good is the Sun Belt if its perennial conference champion sucks so hard against out-of-conference opponents?” Crassly put, but it’s a fair query.

Where does manhandling UCF fall in this story?

I'll take a shot......your coaches prepaid the team to play.

Their OOC record under Anderson & Company was a result of how Anderson prepared for them, especially last year, which he acknowledges was a mistake.

It is also a problem that is in your real view mirror, although the much tougher OOC this year may not show it.

Probably another 0-4 start, with a blowout loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff before they get serious and go 8-0 in SBC play...

The good news is that two of the conference games are long shots and the SWAC game StAte should be able to win playing 10 people.

SMU is obviously the biggie.

My actual point was that maybe his story would not have been quite as dramatic if he had mentioned the UCF thing just a little.

IMO their OOC record, especially the loss to UCA, should be brought every-time they flash those rings in the other SBC schools face.

A-States HC said the did not do a lot of looking ahead to those games, and just used them to learn about his team.

Not fair to the other SBC schools who, at the request of the front office, shoulder the burden, and consequences trying to actually win these games.

All that said I do think they are taking the OOC games seriously now, so hopefully Anderson & Company being an embarrassment to the league is about to end.

My point was that his story might not have seemed as journalistically dramatic if he had included our UCF victory.

I think this all gets answered in Lincoln Nebraska. I'm not predicting a win but how they perform there answers a lot of questions regarding preparation. I consider this game and Miami a long shot but SMU a possibility. If we come out of OOC 2-2 I'm going to be OK with it.

Real bummer you guys will probably not have Dee Liner for that game.

Don't get me wrong you are gong to be very good on the DL even without him, and Nebraska will have their hands-full with your front four, but Liner was finally playing the way everyone expected when he signed with Alabama.

Bowl Game changes the equation. For all of our OOC Troubles in the regular season, we're 3-3 in bowl games in that span. Outside of the Tech disaster where we got killed by first half injuries, we've generally always been competitive in bowl play.

Not to mention we were facing a UCF team that let players sit out of bowl events for charity, and struggled to drum up interest for a game a few miles from their campus. They weren't focused or ready, which seemed to be a recurring theme for the AAC this past bowl season.

Unfortunately, we can't count on SMU to be as completely and woefully unprepared.

The SMU's of the world are not the problem. We have done just fine against G5 opponents out of conference. The problem is that we don't play Wake Forrest or Vandy when we play P5 opponents. We play Auburn, USC, Alabama, Oregon, etc. and those are tough even at home. We split with SMU the last time we had a home and home. Split with Tulsa. Won 3 of last 5 with Memphis.

Well....I guess we really should start taking these preseason games seriously.
I'll pitch the idea to Blake.

Nope. But, fear not. You'll likely have a funbelt trophy shared or not.

You chalk the past few OOC seasons up to Coach Anderson. After last season, our AD has helped the staff see "the light" and yes, you can expect to see better performances. Not necessarily a win but better play. Count on it! Last fall the team hit very little. That experiment is over and this fall may be the toughest coach has put them through. He now understands these games are important for all. Almost forgot but we will have a tremendous improvement in our play calling over last season. Anderson has assumed those duties as well.

Because Blake cannot get out of his own way in using the first four games as a sort of preseason.

If ASU can win OOC then South can win in the SBC, right?
