RE: 17
1917 - America enters its 18 month involvement in The Great World War (two of our allies were Japan and Italy) which ended with an armistice officially beginning at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Armistice Day was rendered irrelevant by the Second Great World War in 1939 - 1945. That is why it was reborn as Veteran's Day.

The red poppy, symbolic of Flanders Field - a scene of battle carnage - was the official symbol of veterans of that First Great World War for many years.

In 1917 a crowd of 35,000 looked on as the Human Fly scaled the building’s exterior. The publicity stunt received national press coverage.

RE: 17
Linn Park - formerly aka Woodrow Wilson Park - was originally set aside in hope that the state capitol would be moved to B'ham, thus the name Capitol Park. The idea was that 20th Street leading up to the park would resemble Dexter Avenue leading up to the Capitol building in Montgomery. It would be framed by the Jeffco Court House on the east side and the City Hall on the west side. Rural political forces centered on the Black Belt and south Alabama kept that move from happening.

These forces stifled Jeffco and B'ham by refusing to reapportion the state legislature from 1901 to 1965 when they were forced by federal courts after "Reynolds v Simms" in 1964. The Jeffco delegation grew from one Senator of 35 to 7, and from 7 House seats of 104 to 20. That illustrates the level of antipathy in Alabama toward Jeffco and B'ham.
