RE: 2018 Mens Hoops Recruiting
Sounds like they are going to keep that one in the back pocket for now, and only use it if the right situation/player comes along. Otherwise, I see nothing wrong with taking three into 2019 recruiting. Looking forward to seeing some growth from the team come November.

AssyrianDuke, do you have any more eligibility remaining? We need another guy in there. Mine is way used up plus I can't ball whatsoever.

Lol. I can't ball either, but I'm sure I can help the soccer team. Maybe you can join the baseball as a trusty bat off the bench?

RE: 2018 Mens Hoops Recruiting
Not sure how if at all this impacts JMU but ODU has added a few transfers in recent days- most recently a big from Providence. According to the ODU beat writer Jarvis Vaughan is slated for prep school not ODU for 2018. It was reported that Vaughan visited JMU after his verbal to ODU. Remains to be seen if he will go prep and then ODU in 2019, reopen his recruitment or if he is being encouraged to go prep because they don't have room on the roster for him. Bears watching because he's a local Valley kid and a front court player. I wonder if he'll end up at Massanutten Military or leave the Valley for prep.

The prep school circuit (post-grad year) are all so sketchy to me. Just my opinion but that whole process is very sketchy.

prep schools are becoming more and more attractive to hs players and their parents. re classifying gives kids the extra year. it used to be post grad but now more and more kids are reclassing in 10th and 11th grade.

makes recruiting more difficult for sure. not all preps deliver on their promises but most are legit.

Exactly, that is one of my points....this whole thing where kids for example re-classify when they go from a public to a private is part of the problem I see. That is just kind of 'gaming' the system so you will be a year older as a freshman. Or what is worse kids start public --- go private(reclassify) --- then come back public and play as a senior when is reality they should be out of HS.

But this diverges some between the original point of the post-grad/prep year. I get it, if it is a year to get your grades on in order, but a lot don't deliver on that. I place a lot of the blame on HS coaches that don't push these kids to do what it takes to be recruit-able by colleges. Sure they are eligible per VHSL for example but you better be off the charts good if you are sporting 3-Cs and a D and taking no college bound type classes. Sometimes if parents have not been to college they don't know, but everyone of these HS coaches know what it takes to be recruited by FBS/FCS schools. Almost every coach wants to see a transcript before they even talk to a kid....this first stop is in the front office if they don't already have it and college coaches get real pissed if a HS Coach has wasted there time on a kid that is not recruit-able.

Looks like a good group of all-around guys. A couple honor roll students, and Flowers was a math tutor in high school! Kudos to HCLR and staff for bringing in quality guys. Now let's see some growth on the court to match their talents off it.

RE: 2018 Mens Hoops Recruiting
Good article in the DNR today about the incoming Freshmen. Sounds like Flowers and Parker are the guys positioned to contribute right away and Urbach and Hicklin appear to me more of role players which is ok by me. Flowers is patterning his game after Kevin Durant's- a point forward if you will which is a type of player that JMU doesn't have on the roster. Parker is very young- not even 18 yet- but has good size and natural PG skills.

Excited about seeing these guys play with the rising Sophomores to see how they fit and gel with the group as a whole.

This is not a new thing. When my brother went off to prep school as a scholarship kiddo in 1959, two boys from my (public) high school went with him for that extra year. One was a wrestler who needed a little bit of an academic boost (he was already a good student, but every little bit helps!) and went on to have a pretty dang good career at Dartmouth. The other was the son of the head football coach (UW-Madison, just for further reference), whose dad felt he needed some extra academics AND a little extra development. He came back to Wisconsin and had a decent, if not spectacular, career playing for dad. These kids were known in prep school parlance as "ringers". Maybe still are.

My brother, incidentally, graduated magna from prep school and went on to Harvard, where he played varsity soccer as the goalie. He then went on to Columbia law school and played on a semi-pro Greek soccer team in NYC where they all joked they hired him because they couldn't find a Greek dumb enough to play goalie. He later coached youth soccer and high school boys and girls in California.

Cameron Smith seems to have definitely received his 6th year. Looks like we have a full roster!

RE: 2018 Mens Hoops Recruiting
Interesting. How commmon is it for hoops players to get a 6th year? I don’t ever recall one in the history of JMU basketball.

RE: 2018 Mens Hoops Recruiting
Where do you guys see this as confirmed? All signs point to it just curious. I think it's technically Smith's 5th year of eligibility. Freshman at Juco (14-15), 2 at FIU 15-16, 16-17, 1 at JMU 17-18. I think he's just a very good student to be a grad transfer going into last year with only 3 years of college.

Semenov was a legit 6th year. Smith will be a 5th year.
