RE: 2018 Mens Hoops Recruiting
Objectively speaking, I wonder what fans of other schools would think if their basketball coach still had 2 open schollies on May 18. I could possibly see leaving one spot open to balance the classes, but hard pressed to think this is a good thing as it currently stands. Gonna try to remain optimistic that HCLR has something he's waiting on.

I bet he uses one ship on a transfer and banks the second schollie.

I don’t think it is unusual to not use all 13 scholarships these days. 11 is fine. If you don’t have the guy you want available, why waste scholarship money bringing in someone who won’t contribute? It is wasting money.

Hofstra has 2 open scholarships still- many others have 1 with a guy who hasn't signed a LOI yet (I believe ODU with Jarvis Vaughan may be in this category). I think JMU is being very selective in terms of the players they added and are recruiting. One PG, One Wing, and now One Front court player with Flowers. Rowe is on record as saying he wants certain types of kids that fit with the culture as well.

JMU was recently mentioned with a mustachioed D2 transfer. He's a kid who had good size on the wing and had 4 triple doubles this past season. He wound up committing to Winthrop who apparently has successfully mined the D2 ranks for transfers the past few seasons. Good to see JMU thinking outside the box a little. Hofstra has a D2 transfer on roster who has been a serviceable big man reserve the last couple of seasons.

I'm not too worried about it- many thought JMU would lose players this off season- they didn't. Many counted Pinkard as being someone who was gone- he's not. The coaching staff is fully in tact. There is good continuity for the first time in a while. They have 11 able bodied guys which is enough depth. If someone who really fits is available I'm sure they will bring them in the fold.

You're a glass is half full on this one. I look at it from a standpoint of "why isn't he getting the players he wants?" (relative to our level of course) His strength is supposed to be recruiting.

To me, the difference between having 11 and 12 is pretty big. Not really concerned about the last open schollie as it probably would benefit us to have it remain open to balance the classes. Should the team lose a guy to academics and another to injury, the next thing you know you're practicing with the student manager.

Right now, we have 3 freshman, 5 sophomores, 1 junior and 2 seniors. Even if Rowe has struck out so far on adding a 4th member to this class, I would not at all consider it wasteful to add a grad transfer. Even if the guy can only provide depth minutes, it would be nice insurance and provide some mentorship to the 8 freshmen and sophomores. And that scholarship would be open for the next season so it wouldn't hamper the future.

I think your logic makes perfect sense. If there is a guy out there that fits the mold you describe, go get him. I like the idea of a quality Juco or grad transfer at the 4. Someone who can push Wilson, Jones and Jacobs for playing time.

I think JMU is pretty set for the top 8 rotation. Any add may not see much court time. Give the recruits some credit. They are looking at the roster and know there is a wealth of young talent on it. In addition, the recruits play pick up ball with the players on their visits. I don’t rule out the possibility that the ones who signed elsewhere did not measure up to what is already here in those pick up games so they chose another school.

Grad transfer and Juco bigs are in short supply and highly sought after. JMU went 1-2 on them last year- Cam Smith was available due to his injury history. Phillips was a good recruit. To put the timing in perspective Phillips was announced last year on 5/18 and Cam Smith not until June 23rd. Still time.

I would be surprised if JMU doesn't add at least one more player. With the way guys leave programs, I would advocate for 13 players. Provides competition and allows for spirited practices and covers for attrition of all kinds.

Guess appears to be heading that route this year and there are rumblings that Sebron will as well. Ty Foster was a guy who fits that mold from last year. Is it for academic qualifying reasons or are these young men set on P5 offers and getting bad advice? Just crazy from where I sit that they wouldn't go to a quality mid major league to play immediately if they could.

I believe 5/16 is a big date- National signing day. We may have more clarity in the next week or so and if someone from under the radar emerges as a late signee.

You're right on Dereon Seabron, as he signed for Massanutten Military Academy.

Christian Guess is still unsigned.

Jamari Dean, the SF out of GA that JMU was his only DI offer went the DII route.

Da'Shawn Phillip out of Dunbar HS in Baltimore City is unsigned.

Keyshawn Bryant 3.5 star SF still unsigned with some SEC schools checking in on him along with 15 offers.

Odd Oguama the PF out of Raleigh reclassified to 2019.

Rowe offered a number of 2019 scholarships but haven't found much on if there are any other 2018's on the radar.

247 already has Guess listed now in 2019 class.

I noticed at Jamari Dean's twitter, he received a trade-type of high school diploma (not college prep). I wonder if he didn't have the necessary credits to be admitted into a 4-year college. Georgia Southwestern College (D2) is a glorified community college. Hard for me to believe a guy in the Atlanta area that made All-City and All-State teams for 2 years and won awards is not capable athletically of playing D1 hoops. Has to be grades/credits related.

according to verbal commits (not the most reliable source i know) we only have one open offer for 2018, dima zdor

http://www.verbalcommits.com/schools/james-madison

Still uncertain whats happening with Matthew Urbach. Could be grades, could be something else? Walfish has been a little lazy in reporting on that issue.

Walfish is 'ok'.......not up to Madia's level.

Having said that Walfish is better than than the 2 previous guys for the DNR

Illinois recently offered Zdor as did Arkansas. Would be nice to snag him but guessing our chances are very slim.

RE: 2018 Mens Hoops Recruiting
Keyshawn Bryant is scheduled to announce today at 5pm. Recent schools for him are Tulane, Miss St. Missouri, and Wichita State. I'm not sure how many still have room. McDuffie for Wich State is returning after exploring the draft, Miss State just got a commitment from Prince Oduro the Siena transfer today. Tulane received a commitment from a Seton Hall/NJ transfer guard earlier this week but they still show an opening. Not so sure JMU is even in the mix or has a shot at this.

Some other updates: KC Hankton- a one time Dukes front court target committed to St. Louis. Isabell the Drexel grad transfer also committed to the Billikens

Dima Zdor is still out there being recruited- Illinois is the latest to offer.

I like the selective approach by JMU- some may say- hey what's going on we have 2 scholarships left but they are being thoughtful about it to make sure the kid is a good fit. Once they got their front court guy Flowers I think they feel they are good there.

It seems to me like JMU has really moved away from 4 year transfers and Jucos and highly favors 4 year high school guys who are good students. This is a positive development in my eyes and shows patience by the staff and at some level you could read this to mean that the admin will have patience with the staff and has communicated that to Coach Rowe and his assistants. I know it's not what some of you may want to hear but there is a calmness over the program that I am kind of ok with.

Looks like Urlach is in the fold https://twitter.com/JMUCoachTaylor/statu...9597074434 Doubt they would tweet this if he wasn't a scholarship guy. 1 more schollie for juco, grad transfer, or 4 year transfer.

BTW some JMU related recruiting news- Ty Foster the GTown decommit from last year who played at Mt Zion this year- by all accounts JMU hasn't recruited him in a while- committed to ECU today.
