Louisiana Tech checking in at #91.

https://d1baseball.com/rankings/d1baseba...ms-91-100/

It wasn’t long ago the Bulldogs were an afterthought in the college baseball landscape in Louisiana. Now, the program continues to gain serious steam both in-state and on the national stage. The Bulldogs made a loud statement two years ago with a trip to the NCAA postseason – the program’s first trip since 1987. Tech followed up that campaign with a 36-20 overall record, 17-13 mark in Conference USA last season under the direction of first-year coach Lane Burroughs. Louisiana Tech is making strides from a facilities standpoint, its fans have embraced the sport and the recruiting ground is rather fertile with the ability to tap into Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi, among other states.

Forgot FIU. They checked in at #95.

https://d1baseball.com/rankings/d1baseba...ms-91-100/

The Panthers haven’t been a consistent postseason program over the past decade, but look for that to change sooner rather than later with heralded head coach Mervyl Melendez in charge. FIU last made the postseason in 2015 and went 31-27 overall, .500 in Conference USA in Melendez’s inaugural campaign. The bad news? FIU didn’t make the postseason this past season. The good news? Melendez and his staff are recruiting at an extremely high level and good things are on the horizon. FIU also profiles well as a program, having access to a plethora of talent, more than adequate facilities and solid tradition.

Yes. Somehow I overlooked that. It's on the spreadsheet now.

I expect a game or two vs SELA.

We'll see what the weekend OOC schedule looks like. State is a great opener. Hopefully Berry keeps the directional Illinois and New England private schools to a minimum.

ODU #79

https://d1baseball.com/rankings/top-100-...ngs-71-80/

Back in the mid-90s, the Monarchs were an absolute force to deal with. While the program is still looking to get back to that prowess, coach Chris Finwood certainly has things headed the right direction. Finwood made a big statement in his inaugural season in 2014 with a 36-win season and an NCAA tourney berth. He has eclipsed the 30-win two of the three seasons since, including a 32-24 mark two seasons ago and an impressive 36-win campaign this past season, along with 19 wins in Conference USA. ODU, even with that resume and an RPI of 50, didn’t make the postseason, but it was still a foundation-setting season. The Monarchs have solid tradition, are in a rich recruiting ground and have a strong conference to sell to recruits. Those factors, among others, make them attractive.

Should have some scheduling news over the next few months. LSU was the first to release their schedule, with others to follow in the coming weeks. Things really pick up in September and October. Working on a CUSA scheduling sheet that includes all 12 conference teams. Not much yet, but have a couple USM and LaTech games filled.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...sp=sharing

Also working on a returning production sheet. This is going to change over the fall and winter, since only one team has released their official roster for 2018 (MTSU). The current sheet assumes that all non-seniors that weren't drafted will return for 2018. Obviously, this isn't going to happen, because of transfers/departures. But it should give people a decent idea of what teams lose/return for 2018.

I used innings pitched as the metric for returning production on the mound. I used "bases earned" as the metric for returning production at the plate. The formula is total bases + HBP + BB + SB - GIDP - CS. Not perfect, but I feel like this should be fairly reliable.

I'm a stathead, and a lover of sabermetrics, and I have to point out that while what you compiled is a statistic I don't think it has the value you were looking to establish. In the words of my high school football coach, "We return almost all of our defense from last year. I'm not sure that's a good thing." Ideal would be returning WAR (if you return all but 2 pitchers but those 2 pitchers had +2.0 WAR, it's going to be a struggle to replace that production), but I doubt anyone tracks WAR in NCAA since it would be tough to establish baseline replacement player. Next preference would be weighted wOBA for hitters but that's probably missing, too, so...

Offense: total weighted OPS returning - takes into account both OPS (quality) and PA (quantity)
Pitching: total weighted ERA returning - ERA (quality) and IP (quantity)

No WAR stat for college ball.

I'll see if I can work on the other two things though. What's the difference between total weighted OPS and OPS?

Thanks for posting these. We have a lot of talent to replace off of last year's team. Wouldn't be surprised to see a step back this season but I have faith that Chris will have these guys ready to roll.

FAU #51

https://d1baseball.com/trending/top-100-...ngs-51-60/

Few head coaches have accomplished more with less than stellar facilities than FAU’s John McCormack. The Owls have one of the more unimpressive setups in the Sunshine State. Yet, this program is a postseason mainstay and has had more success on the national stage than most in the state. FAU has reached three regionals in the last five seasons, reaching the 40-win plateau in 05, while also earning 39 wins in 2016 and winning the Conference USA title. FAU fell just short of an NCAA tournament berth this past season, but still had a solid campaign with a 35-21 overall record and 18-12 mark in Conference USA. FAU has made four total postseason appearances, and the prognosis is good moving forward, too. What FAU lacks in facilities, it has in other areas. For instance, it has a strong area to recruit from, and tradition, at least in the McCormack era, is a strong selling point. Perhaps the Owls will soon get some help from a facilities standpoint, too.
