NMSU completes (almost) their 2018 Indy FB Schedule
Utah State and Texas State were announced as NMSU's 10th and 11th opponents in 2018. Both are road games, giving the Aggies 7 road games and 4 home game. presumably the 12th and final game will be an FCS opponent (my WAG on November 3rd) for a 5th home game.

The return games will be 2020 for Texas State and 2021 for Utah State.

2019 looks similar 3 Home and 6 Road games are scheduled. Likely you'll see two more G5 games, one home one road, and the 5th home game an FCS school. 2019 looks brutal with 3 P5 opponents (at WSU and Alabama to open the season, at Ole' Miss late in the year; 2018 has only Minnesota early on and BYU late).

I don't know how long they can hold out after that in FBS. It's pretty brutal when you have only 5 home games and one is an FCS school. Also Liberty is not likely to continue a two game per year schedule as they should be on their feet by 2020. That will make the November problem even more severe going forward. But hats off to Moccia for getting this together. If he can push back the return games for the last two G5 in 2019 to 2022 or 2023, the schedule will remain flexible for them to move into a conference.

This is worth watching because NMSU needs to succeed as an Indy to keep in the WAC. Just wanted to note the scheduling milestone.

RE: NMSU completes (almost) their 2018 Indy FB Schedule
Holding out in the FBS will be easy. The three P5 opponents in 2019 will earn NMSU a total of $3.8 million dollars ($1.7 million at Alabama, $1.5 million at Ole Miss and $600,000 at Washington State). That kind of money is good for the athletic department and will be hard to walk away from.

Getting Texas State was easy. We had a home opening in 2018 due to a cancellation from Tulsa. In 2020, we have three non-conference home games and we needed a road game. Perfect fit. Getting Utah State at home in November in 2021 was huge for NMSU. As an independent, home games in October and especially November can be difficult.

Scheduling G5 opponents at home can be done, especially if they can tie basketball games to the football scheduling. UMASS has done this with success. Being an independent may be the best thing for NMSU for the next five years. I don't see a lot of movement from FBS conferences at this point.

If UTEP and UNM really wanted to kill NMSU football, they could just opt out of the games, that would be really hard to overcome.

Or tell NMSU they wont play in Las Cruses but will play them in Albuquerque or El Paso. Like WSU did to Idaho

Good to see NMSU staying alive in FBS. It sure helps to have Liberty move up to FBS as an independent.
