And, no, they did not play together. Berkman was here 1997 - '99, and Janish was here 2002 - '04.

Still hearing Berkman might be a candidate.

You're hearing wrong. And, BTW, there is no position currently available. The coaching staff is set with Coach Graham, Janish and Pope as the two Assistant Coaches and Jordan Kopycinski as the volunteer assistant....and it was The OG who hired Paul and Jordan.

Pretty sure he's referring to whenever the time comes that the OG retires. We all know the staff is set for now. That's what we were saying after they hired Janish and you kept saying we still hadn't filled VH's spot.

1. I didn't "kept saying"; rather, I said it once when it was first posted because the rumor I had heard a week earlier had him coming in as a student volunteer. I immediately got the inside scoop and posted it.

2. From what I'm hearing Berkman is out of the picture as a Rice coach-- now and in the future. I understand numerous big donors made their voices heard against Berkman to both Karlgaard and directly to Leebron.

Let me guess...bathroom bill?

I didn't know we had numerous big donors.

So...any guess on where this all points us longer term? Does this become a 1-3 year audition among Pope, Janish, and perhaps other Rice baseball alums TBD who are already in college BB coaching ranks?

That's a disturbing statement. Based on what?

So complaining big donors can keep a person from even being considered for a coaching spot?

That's surprising since donor complaints seem to fall on deaf ears when said complaints are made about an actual coach with poor on-field performance over a number of seasons. More unconventional wisdom I guess.

Maybe the not so big donors should just let the "big" donors fund the athletics program and university. Have fun running what's left into the ground.

Berkman still has a shot from people connected to the program that I know. Hopefully, a change is made after this next year. The program has regressed. Also, I have not heard this (and he would probably need a few years of success), but Patrick Hallmark could be a candidate if this process stretches on.

The last sentence makes total sense if the OG stays for another 2-3 years. I could definitely see that coming to fruition.

If "big donors" are running the athletic department then we are in serious trouble. If we do have "big donors", chances are they are not exactly athletically inclined.

I love Walt...I really do....but sometimes I wonder where this inside info comes from.

Sure, Hallmark could become a viable candidate if he proves successful in his first stint as head coach, but I also think both Pope and Janish are now in a 1 - 2 year audition to see if they have what it takes to be head coach. I do think there is a strong desire to get someone who wants to stay at Rice, and not just use the head coaching job as a stepping stone. Hallmark, Janish and Pope are all Rice alums with strong family ties to Houston.

You might do a little research into the name on our basketball fieldhouse.

That's not to say he's had any hand in Walt's claims, or that there's any truth to those claims at all. I have no info on any of that.

All that said, I certainly hope Walt is correct.

Not to mention the names on the baseball park and baseball field. A good number of Rice's biggest donors are avid sports fans, and many were athletes themselves.

Yes, you are correct. I guess I should have put more thought into my post. However, when I think of most of the "big donors" to Rice University, I don't think of athletics.

I just wonder about the meaning of "numerous". Six? Twenty? Eighty?

And also the definition of "big". Four figures? Six figures? More?

But it is not surprising to me that many of the big donors are former athletes. It has always been a source of pride to me that many of our athletes go on to major success in non athletic fields. I wonder how many of TCU's "big" donors are former athletes who made their money in fields other than pro athletics.

Buddy, I consider myself a leadership donor, but not one of the "big pocket" ones who can provide lead funding to buildings and facilities. From my perspective, a "big donor" is one who has given well over $1MM to the University.

I consider you an outstanding donor, Walt. Certainly way above my level. My guess is that there are not a lot of "big donors", especially if the $1MM is for a single gift and not an accumulated total. In fact I can think of only three, although some may have been more anonymous with their gifts. Was this the number you were thinking of when you said numerous big donors made their voices heard against Berkman?

Thanks for your response.

Buddy, to me "big donors" are those who have donated an accumulated total of over $1MM...and there are more of those than you might think.

Maybe the donors who are opposed to Berkman are not athletic donors, but donors to the university/endowment?

Not likely since most of those donors would not have known that Lance was a potential coaching candidate.

His statement was ' "big donors" to Rice University' not ' "Big donors" to Rice athletics'. No need to correct (or 'clarify') by misstating what was said.

Try again. Actually, I simply said, "big donors", and did not refer to whether they where Rice athletic donors or donors to the university in general. (See post #40 in this thread.)

I'm most certainly not new to the program. However, my initial thought process when hearing the words "big donors" immediately shifts to non-athletic entities regarding Rice University. As I said in my follow up post, I should have put more thought into the context of the conversation as it related to the "big donors" statement.
