Another one (of very many) great guys on those teams. My kids really liked interacting with him....

He's hitting .270 at Norfolk, and got called up for awhile to fill in for the Orioles due to injuries. He's spent time on the Orioles roster for small bits of the last 3 years.

I'd quibble in a minor way with Walt's comments that he is considered merely 'good field', as his fielding peripheral numbers (when he's actually gotten on the field) in the majors have been ridiculously good, frankly Gold Glove level had he managed to hit well enough to sustain a starting role anywhere.

With regard to his 'star' definition at Rice, he was all-WAC twice, and his glove was sterling here as well. He also tied for the team lead in RBI in 2004 for Rice. I'm fairly sure he was drafted as a junior.

Rick, I said he was an "exceptional defensive SS". "Good field, no hit" was a phrase regularly used for MLB middle infielders in the 1960s - '70s. Think Don Kessinger, Dale Maxwell, Hal Lanier, Bud Harrelson. The "good field" meant GG caliber defensive ability.

fair enough. Dal Maxvill (I'm a Cardinals fan).

The most famous Wash U baseball grad. He earned an EE degree.

The article also mentioned Charlie James, another Wash U/MLB player. My dad graduated from Wash U 3 years before Maxvill.

RE: Paul Janish New Baseball Assistant
Funny Janish story. Back in '03, a friend and I were working on the groundscrew (not sure how long it lasted, but they had asked for some student volunteers to do things like drag and water the field pre-game....given this was pre-club baseball, figured that was as close as I was going to get to the game post-high school. A lot of fun, but I digress). It was our freshman year. Rice had won 30 straight games and we were playing, I believe, Lamar on a Tuesday evening....we had already made plans to drive to SHSU the next Tuesday for the game that would break the longest winning streak.

After prepping the field, we would generally quietly hang around for a few minutes before the game started. That particular day, my friend slapped Janish on the back as we went down the dugout steps and he went up them...Janish tripped and fell. About that time, I believe it was Coach Taylor, told us it was time for us to leave...I guess he thought we were going to hurt somebody:-) Of course, we went on to lose to Lamar that night ending the winning streak. To this day, my roommate and I still debate whether it was him knocking Janish down or Coach Taylor telling us to leave the dugout early that is the cause of the streak getting snapped.

Happy to have Janish on board. Looking forward to next season.

The MLB game I remember seeing play in was for the Reds against the Orioles at Camden Yards. I think it was in 2011. Maybe he can coach Rice to improve its fielding. The fielding has not been good in recent years and has cost us games.

ETA - Paul J. played for Billings in the Reds organization in 2004, so the Fox article's statement that he was drafted in 2005 is in error.

Here's the official press release on the Janish hiring...

http://www.riceowls.com/sports/m-basebl/...17aaa.html

He's playing out his current contract with the Orioles, so he likely won't be joining the staff until mid-to-late September.

I like the quote from Graham in the press release that says the last game he was thrown out of at Rice was in 2003 and was because Janish was called out on strikes.

Could he be part of a Berkman coaching staff? Did they play together?

Berkman is out of the picture. Period.

And, no, they did not play together. Berkman was here 1997 - '99, and Janish was here 2002 - '04.

Berkman was 1995-1997 - part of the first Rice regional team in 1995 and a 1st round MLB pick in 1997 after helping lead Rice to its first CWS (Matt Anderson was #1 overall that year).

That was game two in the Championship Series against Stanford at Omaha's Rosenblatt Stadium. We were there. I didn't remember Paul was at bat.

You're hearing wrong. And, BTW, there is no position currently available. The coaching staff is set with Coach Graham, Janish and Pope as the two Assistant Coaches and Jordan Kopycinski as the volunteer assistant....and it was The OG who hired Paul and Jordan.

Super pumped to have Janish back! He was one of my favorites; certainly the best defensive SS at any level who I've regularly watched up close.

Bravo!

Pretty sure he's referring to whenever the time comes that the OG retires. We all know the staff is set for now. That's what we were saying after they hired Janish and you kept saying we still hadn't filled VH's spot.

I'm not sure that Janish doesn't become something of a stealth candidate to replace Wayne when the time comes. If he adapts well to coaching and whatever recruiting he does, plus his MLB pedigree, he might make himself a viable candidate. I don't think he's among the leaders at this point, but depending on what happens, he could become one.

How does the salary we pay our head coach compare to the salaries of head coaches at other top programs.

1. I didn't "kept saying"; rather, I said it once when it was first posted because the rumor I had heard a week earlier had him coming in as a student volunteer. I immediately got the inside scoop and posted it.

2. From what I'm hearing Berkman is out of the picture as a Rice coach-- now and in the future. I understand numerous big donors made their voices heard against Berkman to both Karlgaard and directly to Leebron.
