Nice to see Rice get /equal billing/ with other Texas SWC programs in this feature... but... I'm sorry, Maegle WAS NOT the player to leave the bench in that famous play.

Maybe they'll have made a correction by the time most of you see this. It's only been up 2 hours.

How about: Maegle is best known for single-handedly curb-stomping Alabama in the 1954 Cotton Bowl.

The Seven stages of being a rice fan on Chron.com

1. Cool, a story about legendary college football players in Texas! Maybe there's a Rice mention- There ought to be!!
2. Ok, lead with UT and A&M of course, the usual suspects. Maybe they forgot about us.
3. We'll, they've got TCU and UH in here and plenty of throw backs to days gone by..maybe there's a chance
4. YAY we made the article! Tommy Kramer for the win!
5. Oh look, more horns & ags. Maybe Kramer was just a token Owl in a sea of orange and maroon
6. No! Not top billing but EQUAL REPRESENTATION!!! This is the most awesome article ever and it's got Dicky Maegle (and several other Owl legends, too!!!)
7. Face Palm.

I didn't see it earlier, but this is what it says now:
Quote:Maegle is best known for being the person tackled by an Alabama player coming off the bench in the 1954 Cotton Bowl, but he also set 26 school records in his career and made the College Football Hall of Fame. Oh, and Maegle was awarded that touchdown in the Cotton Bowl.

As a ten year old boy with my family I saw this play directly below me by about twenty rows. He had a marvelous day - nearly 300 yards on about nine carries.

265 yds. on 11 carries, a bowl record for average (24.1) that may still stand. Four TDs.

If you do, don't forget to mention we are 3-0 against them all time...

They have been dodging us lately.

Alabama player = Tommy Lewis

He also scored their only touchdown.
