RE: Rice in the NFL (2017 edition)
One question about yesterday. 3rd and 4 or 5, around own 25, 4 point lead with about 1:50 left, Seattle just burned second time out. Do you throw the ball? Incomplete pass stops the clock and saves Seattle's last timeout, first down wins the game, a run into the middle is unlikely to produce the first down, but will force Seattle to use last timeout.

I would say, what's the play that gives me the best chance to make 5-6 yards, and run it. I like getting a mobile QB to the edge with passing opportunities in that situation. Any other thoughts?

Texans ran straight ahead for a yard, Seattle took last timeout, Texans punted, good punt and good coverage, and Seattle scored in 3 plays. That has to be on the Texans' defense, but the offense had a chance to win the game. I like giving the offense a chance to win the game before putting it all on the defense.

You ALWAYS put the game into the hands of your playmaker(s). Definitely call a roll-out run/pass option, perhaps with the TE starting on the left side, faking a run to the left, rolling to the right with TE dragging on a short route, WRs with longer outs, and perhaps the RB on a wheel route up the left sideline. But what do I know, I'm just a casual fan.

I agree. I would have preferred to see something more creative than "up the middle". I was hoping for a run/pass option rollout for Watson, and let him do what he does. I had no confidence the beat up Texans defense could stop Wilson and the Seahawks.

I didn't watch this game, but I have thoughts on the situation as you described it. That one TO for Seattle isn't very valuable if you give it to them on offense. If you throw an incompletion and let them take it to their offense, it will only save them about 10 seconds or so. When Seattle has the ball, they can choose how fast they want to go. An NFL offense shouldn't feel forced to attack the sidelines until the last half minute. Take it if it's there, but if the safeties are sacrificing the middle of the field, get the extra yardage that's there. Outside of the final seconds, an NFL offense should be confident that they can get set with a new play or a spike very quickly. The TO really isn't that valuable at this level until very late. I might like the call to run it in college, especially if the opponent is playing a backup or underclassman at QB, but NFL offenses execute at such a high level that the opportunity for the Texans to get a first down was much more valuable than forcing the last TO.

The Texans better not kneel at the National Anthem again like in Seattle. Their may be a mass exodus by the fans from the game. Houston is not Seattle and the Astros is "The Team" of Houston, not the Texans. Oh yea, Covington was kneeling like all the rest of the majority of the players. Great rep of Rice University.

The problem with rolling the QB is it cuts the field in half. This makes the defense only have to cover half the field. In addition, if you need only 6 yards, the defense will be up so you decrease the passing lanes while bringing the secondary closer to the LOS to come up for secondary run support. Obviously, go tripps with quick crossing routes to the tripps. The single receiver will be manned up and can do anything to just get open past the marker. The single back can get to the flat or lead block for the QB and the QB can throw or run depending on the receivers and the rush. You have rubs, single coverage, built in blitz routes and ability for QB to run while making the defense cover the whole field. See offense can save the defense.

Yes, he is a great representative of Rice University. And that extends to his choice to join a short, silent protest.

More to the point of this thread, though, he's out for the season with a torn bicep.

That sucks for Covington and is bad news for a depleted Texans defense.

JJ Watt, Mercilus, Dylan Cole, Covington are injured. and Cushing is suspended.

Wow.

Putting aside the snide political comment ... Covington is Canadian. Should foreign players really be forced to act a certain way when in another country and when that country plays its national anthem? What if a US citizen is playing basketball or soccer abroad and decides not to stand during that country's national anthem? Should that country force them to do so? Should the fans at those games denigrate the player?

Putting aside he anthem/NFL protests, I think it’s common courtesy to stand for whatever anthems are played.

You don’t see Russian NHL players kneeling for the Star Spangled Banner, nor do you see American players kneel when playing at a Canadian rink.

I do not disagree, but I do not think the issue here is “common courtesy”, certainly not the context in which OldOwl brought it up. But this isn't really the best place for a discussion like this and I shouldn’t have taken OldOwl’s bait. It just struck me as a particularly silly commentary when directed toward a non US citizen.

Protest against what? he owner calling them "inmates"? he didn't like what the owner said so he disses the flag? Does not compute.

Amd in London, the players stood for "God Save the Queen" and did not stamd for "The Star Spangled Banner". what message does, that send?

i am rapidly losing interest in the NFL.

For the record, Covington is a dual citizen as his father is from North Carolina.

Maybe we can just agree to stop discussing the national anthem protests in a thread that is supposed to be about former Rice players in the NFL? I agree to stop.

Callahan had minimal impact in the Saints/Bears game yesterday. I kept looking for him on the TV, but other than an early missed tackle and a pass-defensed, I did not see him. I saw a note that he left the game with a knee injury and was questionable to return.

Boswell was 2/2 on FGs and 2/2 on XPs. For the season, he is 18/20 on FGs and 15/15 on XPs.

Or this.

Also, Sendejo served his suspension yesterday. so he should be back next week for Minnesota. He was suspended for a hit to the head of Mike Wallace the week before.

Luke Willson made a heads up play recovering a fumble down field on what initially looked like a forward pass, but after review was a forward fumble following a Clowney hit on the other Wilson. Luke seemed to be the only player on the field that thought the play might be a fumble. Seattle scored shortly thereafter. As it tuned out they needed every score they got.
