RE: UPDATED: 8/5 Practice Notes (8/6 Update on Page 4)
For the record, I really don't have a problem with 2 QBs playing in the non-conference. Just get it figured out heading into conference.

Carey being willing to pull McIntosh probably won them the Northwestern game in 2014. Being willing to pull Hare probably won the Kent State game that year as well.

Ideally, have it figured out going into the last non-conference game at San Diego State. If they want to split time with Graham and Santa before then, so be it.

Say what you want about Carey, but this idea he has this guy in his head who he wants to have the job and sticks to it is comical. He moved Maddie to WR before the year, but still was willing to admit his mistake and pulled Graham in the WIU game and never looked back from Maddie. If you want to rip him and the staff for their evaluation of Graham and Maddie to start with, that's totally valid. But Carey has never been shy about making changes. Hell, he put in Graham for a series in 2016 at CMU when Hare was playing like dog ass.

The D-line does appear to have a lot of depth. I would expect Leroy, Heflin, Lee, Webster and Corley to get playing time at tackle and Sutton Smith, Corcoran, Sanders, Wynne and possibly Lorbeck at end.

Dillon Thomas is practicing at corner. He has a lot to learn but looks the part there. With his length he could turn into a Rashaan Melvin type for us.

Overall I would say this team has a chance to be really good, depending on QB production of course. There's plenty of talent everywhere else.

With a 1 dimensional offense I don't see more than 3-4 wins. The defense is going to have to be on the field way too much
They won 5 conference games last year playing 3 different QBs and a 1 dimensional offense.

As long as they don't completely **** the bed OOC again and lose to EIU, they should be at minimum a 7 win team.

I think people are underestimating the impacts from loss of playmakers. Golladay did alot of covering for Carey the past few seasons. The fact Carey is going to be content with Graham or Santa tells me that we are headed to one of the most predictable unproductive offenses we have seen in some time. I feel bad for those two also, they just might get killed at some point. Defenses are going to be able to tee them up

Yep, because NIU has really desguised what they wanted to do on offense in recent years lol

I agree the biggest thing to come out of this is that Carey is to blame that the one
QB that has a potential upside high enough to win with is a redshirt freshman and maybe it would be unfair to put him in that situation. It's a bad situation and Carey does get the blame for that

Go watch a practice and I don't think you'll feel the same way.

Are you seriously dismissing Childers based on the first few practices of camp?

For the future? No. For this year? Hey, maybe he makes leaps and bounds improvement over the next few weeks. I'd love to see it. However, I didn't see anything to make me believe he's more talented than Santa is and he certainly wasn't making better decisions than Santa or Graham (which should be expected as a freshman).

NIU at least had weapons that defenses had to consider. Without that this year, I just have this fear that Carey is going to go into a complete conservative shell and amplify his already existing tendencies. I just feel bad for all three QBs , they are being placed in what is going to be a very tough situatio
And maybe the thing that pisses me off the most is Carey will throw THEM under the bus and say we didn't execute when they are being put in a situation that is impossible to succeed with for anyone

I don't doubt that you know what you are talking about. I, for one, appreciate the updates/insight. One weeks worth of practice should not close the door on Childers. I didn't see him play, but it doesn't sound like the gap between him and the other too is significant. I just struggle with how "all over the map" this site is. We have now gone from a "burn the shirt" campaign (Hall), to Childers being the obvious "no brainer" choice to...who knows what. Three issues in particular give me heartburn. 1) the overall disrespect for Carey. Is he a perfect coach, no; I don't care for his sideline demeanor, but he runs a fairly clean program; he will make the tough personnel decisions, but will also give a kid a chance to recover from mistakes. He has hired a pretty talented staff, and he does not shy away from accepting responsibility. I know he inherited a ton, but his record is pretty damn good. 2) the total disregard for Graham; is he the most talented QB we ever had? No; but he represents the University very well, a classy kid who has done nothing but his absolute best. He was put into a challenging situation and has responded reasonably well; he knows the offense better than any QB, and when he is right does not make the mistakes that will lose games. 3) the negative conclusions on Santa given the incredibly small sample size. The kid has battled back from what I understand was a fairly substantial arm injury; in his first game back he struggles throwing the ball, and we want to conclude he is...not the answer...not a QB...He's terrible, etc. This rationale is ludicrous to me. Based on what he has done, why we are pessimistic rather than optimistic is a mystery to me. I am looking forward to this year, and I hope who ever gets the call, the kid lights it up.

I hear you on not putting blame on Graham and Santa , it's more on carey for putting them in this situation. Don't agree with you on Carey accepting blame.

We got spoiled with QB play and winning, myself included. And what you're saying about Graham and Santa isn't wrong per say, but people want to win. I know as I get older not being too hard on unpaid college kids is something I have to get better at. Right or wrong, I always found it more acceptable when I was the same age as them lol

At this point I will give way more leeway to Santa than Graham.
I just hope Carey picks the right one, whomever that may be.

If Graham is QB1, its going to be a long year for NIU. He sounds like a great kid, and he'll always have that nice stretch of play as a freshman, but I think by this time he's proven to be a pretty sub-par D1 quarterback.

Let Childers play and grow. Those first 4 games are tough. Childers can go 1-3. Then with the MAC schedule I could see them winning another 4-5. 6-6 or 5-7 year. Not a bad start for a Childers.

And let's not forget---Graham has done something that none of the others will ever do----sit at a table at the first round of the NFL draft!! Might have been for only five picks---but he was there and got some good air time on ESPN!

I'm sure it's too soon to eliminate any of the QBs from consideration, especially since they just started with full uniforms IIRC. In any case, I try not to read too much into one bad day since everyone has those.

Thanks for the practice reports! 04-bow

Really hoping Huff has a big year - he's certainly capable of it. I get the feeling that people (non-NIU fans) are still a bit unaware of him and he could surprise them. If Beebe can stay Healthy and Blake can catch the ball we should have enough weapons in the passing game.

Unfortunately I don't see Carey letting any of the QBs throw this year. If NIU was so ultra predictable with playmakers last year, how is it going to be this year with no playmakers. We are going to see the most conservative offense we have ever seen at NIU and opposition will absolutely bottle up the run

2016...highest amount of passes per game thrown in NIU's history. Over 33 attempts.. It was also the most balanced ratio of pass to run we've had since 07. But you call it one dimensional. And if a team is going to win only 3 games, they're obviously going to constantly be down in points and HAVE to throw. Try to Sprinkle in a little football logic with that bias.

Passes which are extensions of the run game don't count , NIU had the best WR in college football, and we were trailing most of the time . Please include some logic also

I mean they probably threw that much because they were losing....lol. I don't think more passes equals good for NIU. Never has.

You do understand how the spread option offense works, right? Why those passes are thrown sideline to sideline? And also that NIU was doing it before Carey was head coach?

NIU was down more than 7 points in a game only twice in all of conference play. WMU and EMU. So no, not trailing most of the time.

NIU was down more than 7 points in a game only twice in all of conference play. WMU and EMU. So no, not trailing most of the time.

Rabid you have to remember you can call it a "spread offense" but playcalling still matters. For example, rolling Hare out on every play vs OSU and throwing the ball into the 10th row everytime generally will not yield results. Also please note that the offense tends to run a little smoother when you have Jordan Lynch as your QB. This is a failure of coaching, when you do not adapt to the personnel you have at the current time. That is why Graham probably will be dead before the year is over. Carey runs this team in a state of fear the way I see it, fear of changing anything up, fear of being held accountable, fear of players making mistakes. The time has come for a change, so I'll stop harping on this for rest of the year. We have an AD that is not even holding anyone accountable, so heck I might do what Carey is doing to.

I think you are going to see a Boise State game kind of bad in the offense this year on many occasions. I am not going to say I told you so at that time, so I will just say it right now.
