Oh yeah, well, I like him more than you! And to prove it, if I ever have a son, I'm going to name him Drew William!

Well, Coach, I'll raise you one. I will adopt a boy just to name him Drew William!

@TheTrueLakey: Blessed and grateful to announce that I will be playing basketball at Old Dominion University as a graduate student while I pursue a master’s degree in Sport Management. I want to thank Jeff Jones and his staff for believing in me and giving me an opportunity #GoMonarchs ? https://twitter.com/TheTrueLakey/status/...72/photo/1

One of our eagle eyed posters noticed he was added to the roster a week or two ago. Not much info on him, apart from him being a part of the UVA program. I believe as a manager.

I did that. But I knew he was practice fodder. Which was behind my joke about him being the 2nd heaviest on the team to bull rush WKU’s Basey. N

Edit: I realize that you usually make idiotic comments like this in order to argue and then disappear as soon as you have no logic to back it up.

I think people think recruiting is static. Just because we offered a scholarship at one point doesnt mean it is promised throughout the whole season. Some of the offers are backup options in case others move on. Offers are also pulled. When you hear we offered someone that doesnt mean that were a priority.

This class seems to be pretty solid. I dont like it as much as last years but that was as good of a class as we've had in some time. Not sure what the “problems” are

* Depth at the 5 position.
* Defending guys like Bassey at the 5 position.
* Getting offense at the 5 position.
* Depth at the 4 position (if Kalu isn't moved there).
* Getting offense at the 4 position (if Kalu isn't moved there).

Additionally, all newcomers are big question marks as far as how much they will even play with Jeff as the coach. Till they show they can defend to his liking they will face an uphill battle to get playing time. Highly touted recruits - at least as far as the posters on this board are concerned - such as Kah, Hueitt, and Reece (for example) saw very little action their first season with the team. Hopefully that won't be an issue for the new point guards as they will be having to fill approximately 38 minutes of playing time with the departure of Caver.

It depends on what they think they can get from Reece this year. Carver, Dickins, Ekizpe, Karaiskos, and Reece is not bad depth at the 4/5 spots.

From last year they lost 9 mins from Robinson and a handful of BJ at the 4 minutes. This year, Dickens/Ezikpe will see increased minutes over the 25 total they played last year. Reece will hopefully add some minutes. Karaiskos will likely play a handful of minutes. Green/Oliver/Godwin will be able to play some minutes at the 4 when they want to go small.

Reece hasn't shown enough to be a player they can count on this season to play significant minutes and be successful. Maybe he will, maybe he won't.

Karaiskos may end up like the Greek Forward (Pilavious) they brought in prior to last year - i.e. on the bench and nowhere to be seen as far as meaningful playing time. At this point no one knows what to expect from him as far as being a contributor this season. He may play the role that Vassor did a few years ago - emergency replacement center.

Dickens needs more bulk and muscle to hold his ground in the low post against guys like Bassey in order to be successful. Either that or he needs to learn to keep some spacing off of his man so that he can go up with him to challenge his shot better than he has shown the ability to do. Maybe he will, maybe he won't.

Kalu needs to be a 4 guy and play the 5 primarily when Jeff wants to play a smaller lineup. If Dickens doesn't add strength and weight then he too is more suited for a smaller lineup center.

Carver is a good defensive 4 player but a liability on the other end of the court.

Bump .... No post presence. Not surprised.

I am surprised. I figured Kalu and Dickens would be more than adequate and possibly even pretty good. Ezikpe was one of my faves last year.

While I really do wish that you had been correct about those things, I obviously didn't share your optimism, as I stated back in June.

And they made it work last year. This year they lose 9 mins per game from Robinson and add Karaiskos. (Not saying they will be as good because Stith/Caver are hard to replace).

The inside game is of utmost importance to most styles of basketball and especially so with the style of slower pace, rebounding advantage, 2nd shots that are easier ones off offensive rebounds, and defending without lots of help down low that Jeff's teams utilize. He needs a low post scoring threat as well to be successful offensively with his style. Jeff is still coaching his system this season while having very little of those things out of his 4 and 5 (especially) positions this season. Robinson's size, experience, and post up ability are indeed missed. He needed to be replaced during the off season recruiting by someone equal or better and wasn't.

Kalu is still playing the 5 when he in my opinion he is better suited to be playing the 4.

Dickens is still to skinny to hold position against bigger/stronger players.

Karaiskos, thus far at least, is even less than the 3rd string center that I expected him to be - something like the role Stephen Vassor used to play. His injury played into that for sure, but didn't he have an injury when they recruited him? Hopefully he can soon get over his injury and we can better determine exactly what we can expect to get from him going forward.

We are rebounding offensively just as well as last year (30%). Kalu playing the 4 or 5 doesn't matter when he fouls every time down the court.

Robinson played 9 minutes per game last year and provided almost nothing. This team sucks because they lost 2 of the contenders for CUSA player of the year and returning players like Green and Godwin have not stepped up....not because they lost 9 minutes per game of someone giving them 2 points and 2 rebounds per contest.

Im not sure why that doesn't sound silly to you.

THIS no one has stepped up to fill in the scoring void, it may come in time. Conference tourney is uber important now.

Everything is always about a statistic for you so it is not surprising that you don't understand a lot about the game. Especially the intangibles that affect the outcome of a game, but don't show up on a stat sheet.

By your account they lost a player that provided nothing, meaning they lost nothing at the position. The guys that returned at the position (Dickens and Kalu) are more experienced and should be even better this season. By your response to this topic back in June you insinuated that "they only lost 9 minutes" and it worked last year so everything would be fine. Newsflash - the interior play isn't fine.

Yes because everything is reflected somewhere.

Our interior game is not worse than last year. The rest of our team is significantly worse than last year.

The answer should be yes. Kalu isn't improving and Dickens can't hang. AC is just a smaller Robinson.

Exactly. Caver and BJ scored their asses off and made everyone better. I keep seeing people saying x regressed. I do not think this is the case. He was a much better third option than he is as a primary option. He was better because of how good our back court was. And this is evident with the entire team.

I would certainly take Robinson over a couple scholarships that we have on the roster this year but would it make an impact on the team....no.

Like many things stats quite often fail to tell the whole story and often lack context. IIRC Robinson saved his best for last. Yes, for an entire season his stats were meager, but wasn't he a bit of a hero at the end and during the tourney? Seems he battled Bassey to a draw and may have even gotten the better of him. I would certainly take Robinson over Dickens.

Robinson did a fine job on Bassey in the 14 mins he played in the championship game. Got the better of him...certainly not. But, we obviously don't have anyone as good as Bassey so it took other players stepping up for us to win.

Dickens is playing like crap right now. He's a better player than Robinson though.

If you could have Robinson on this team right now, would you take him?

The answer should be yes. Kalu isn't improving and Dickens can't hang. AC is just a smaller Robinson.

I would certainly take Robinson over a couple scholarships that we have on the roster this year but would it make an impact on the team....no.

LOL. Sure it would make an impact on the team this year. It would take Dickens out of the starting lineup and send him to the bench same as it did last season.

Since you love stats, here's some head to head stats for comparison -

Robinson - 9 minutes, 2.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, 53.3% shooting.
Dickens - 15.6 minutes, 3.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 44.4% shooting.
Ezikpe - 14.4 minutes, 5.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 43.2 % shooting.

Not a lot of difference in the "stats". Only thing is that Robinson did most all of his against the starters of the other team whereas the other two guys came off the bench. Robinson shot a much higher percentage, and managed comparable scoring and rebounding averages in far less time on the court.

I'd also point out that if he played on this season's team he would probably have a higher scoring average since he would not be playing as only the 3rd or 4th scoring option behind BJ and Caver who collectively averaged 33.4 points on a low scoring team. The shots and points are there to be had this season for Dickens and Ezikpe. They just aren't taking advantage of it well enough. I'm sure Jeff wishes they COULD score more than they are.
