RE: Class of 2021 admissions stats
The discussion RE: growing class sizes; I thought I had seen some things in the past where they wanted to grow the enrollment. From alumni and potential athletics fandom perspective I really would like to see the enrollment grow each and every year. There are enough outstanding students in the world to maintain the academic reputation of the university at Rice if the admin allows the student body to grow. Sure they would need to grow the facilities. Isn't that a great problem to have? The value of the Rice degree is not determined by its uniqueness.

Right because Asian people don't like sports. We've never met but I'm Asian, btw. I've been organizing the Houston Football Watch parties for the last 3 years, I volunteer to mentor and review resumes at the Career expos every year and I am involved in various alumni affinity groups. I also donate to Owl Club every year and apparently I am only about 1 of around 1000 alumni who donate yearly to Owl Club. I could just as easily say where the white people at??

What do YOU contribute to Rice besides posting about how International students don't contribute to Rice? Not to mention they pay full boat so others can get a subsidized education. Basketball is pretty popular in China, chances are if they like basketball in China they probably would like watching it here, except for old alums who want to tell them they are not welcome.

Bravo!

I want to dispel your myths but I don't even know where to start, and think that you've probably got some deep-seated beliefs that no posts or arguing on a random online forum will unseat.

I will simply say that you are clearly disconnected from the Rice student experience today, and your claims above are false.

Record size class was not intentional but result of higher yield. Guess we admitted especially discerning group this year!

This post is disgusting.

With this weekend's events in Charlottesville as a backdrop to this post, it is especially so.

I don't even know what to say. It's sad that a fellow poster would find it acceptable to put these words out on this forum. Painting an entire race with such broad brush strokes is thoughtless at best and hateful at worst.

Crummy morning perusing the news made worse by checking out the Parliament.

How many Asians belong to the Owl Club? It should be at least 30% based on the average enrollment. Can someone please verify or does such stats actually exist? This is not a racial issue. This is a financial issue. With such a small student enrollment, Rice needs financial help for the athletic program from everyone. Otherwise, we are just spinning our wheels.

Try again....and keep digging. The living Rice alumni base is nowhere close to 30% asians.

Singling out a race of people for not being a positive contribution to campus culture is pretty freaking racist. Doubling down on said racism and hiding behind the weak excuse that it's a financial issue is awful.

My advice- Step away from the keyboard. Come back when you are ready to type something to the effect of:

"Looking back at this thread I realize now how terribly I came across. What I said was unacceptable and I will learn from this experience. I'm sorry to have made disparaging remarks directed towards an entire race. I will choose my words more carefully in the future. There is no place for racism in this forum. I sincerely apologize."

Otherwise just stop posting. You are embarrassing yourself.

I guess you are saying the large percentage of Asians enrolled and graduating from Rice is a recent trend but historically this is not the normal trend?

I will treat your question as a serious one.

I was at Rice from 1963-1968. The only Asian students I remember were grad students.

Of course, most people older than me are dead, so i cannot speak to the percentages of "living Rice alumni".

Thanks for your comments. That is what I thought. I wonder if the Black and Latino enrollment has increased or decreadef over time. Maybe these stats are not available.

The black enrollment is not very high at Rice. If you see a black student (especially a male), there's probably a 50/50 chance it's an athlete.

The Latino population is sizable and diverse in terms of country of origin.

As you can tell from my years at Rice, I entered under the will, graduated after the will was broken. So I was there when it was all white, left in the early years of diversification.

I never saw a black student, although the first ones were admitted while I was there. I did know a couple of Hispanic students, both in the class behind mine. I am of partial Hispanic descent myself, but nobody would take me for Hispanic from my name, accent, and appearance. I sometimes wonder if i slipped in without them knowing my heritage. Would I have been accepted if my surname came from my grandmother instead of my grandfather? Without revealing actual details of my personal life, think of the difference between something like "Wainwright"(grandfather) and something like "Rodriguez"(grandmother).

The classes were much smaller then - 425 in my freshman class, so if you are trying to figure the profile of "living alumni", take class size into account.
