RE: 10 Years Since the Red Wolves were Born
I'm SO glad we picked the Red Wolves. The Indians nickname had become so watered-down and PC is was pathetic (see Letterhead Joe). By that time, they had "retired" all of the traditions and replaced them with more politically correct ones.

I seem to remember an article which highlighted the money North Dakota spent fighting a hopeless court battle for the Sioux name? Cant find it now...but it was in the millions. So glad stAte used their money for other purposes.

It was really bad when the "Indian Family" was introduced. They'd come out in Indian garb, go to mid court and do absolutely nothing.

Red Wolves was an excellent choice. Fight song hasn't been the same, though.

They used to do more. In the old days they'd come out on horse back, dancing and plant a flag at midfield before football games. We had to cut 95 percent of that out, so the appearance became more symbolic.

AState was doing stuff that is now tradition at Florida State before Florida State was playing football but because we were Indians and not a specific tribe, we just kept chipping away piece by piece until it was really dumb to even keep the name... before the NCAA even stepped in.

...instead of singing " I-N-D-I-A-N-S means Vic-tor-yyy! State!" We now sing "RED! W-O-L-V-E-S means Vic-for-Yyy! State!"

I fail to see how drastically different the fight songs are

Didn't say it was drastically different. I said it's just not the same. Hearing the cheerleaders twang EYE IN DEE EYE AY IN ESS is something I miss. The new one doesn't exactly roll off the tongue as easily.

It is a little tortured. But we weren't going to let them steal our fight song too. That verse has an honorable battle scar.

Agree that it does not roll off the tongue as easily and it was a bit of an adjustment for me personally, but I much prefer Red Wolves to Indians. WOLVES UP !!

2. In fairness to our conference mates, I'll note that Warhawks is also a good nickname. The plane connection gives it a nice regional flavor.

I remember some of the ULM fans were arguing hard for Warhawks and were less than happy when the bird logo appeared.

I think ULM might have won the renaming battle had an airplane logo emerged, just too easy to think of special helmet designs based on the Flying Tigers nose art and WWII pilot helmets.

Interestingly enough ULM has now brands way more with the plane than the bird, which is what we should have done from the start. So much in fact, that I would expect some versions of the logo with plane are inevitable.

Forgive my lack of knowledge here....but does ULM have an on field mascot? If not it would have been really cool to nickname one "Gus" after him.

I sing it, but I absolutely hate the "Red-W-O-L-V-E-S" I don't want to change the rest of the fight song, and I don't have a better idea, i just think it's dumb, especially when you knew the old version.

I also liked the Thunderbird and something with trains. Engines or something with a big train whistle, but better heads than me decided Red Wolves and I absolutely beleive they got it right.
