I don't know about your RB's but Keon Howard looked like a good runner to me albeit with loose hands and terrible throwing. Ito Smith will definitely be a top 3 RB in the league.

It will depend on the O-line AND O-line depth.

With Mullins gone, they'll have to.

Our running attack will be good this year. We may have the best back, and he's a freshman.

Southern Mississippi was 8th in CUSA last year in ypc and 6th in total rushing yards.

We should have a good rushing offense this year.

Maybe, and maybe not. I think Lawry and Cox will give Smith and Payne a good run for their money (pun intended). As for QB production, that will depend on who wins our QB competition, but if it is JUCO transfer Jordan Hoy, he ran for 712 yards last year while throwing for 3434 yards and 37 TDs at Fullerton College in California. If he is our starter and as good as we hope, the Monarchs will challenge any other running game in the conference.

Ito is the conference's top returning rusher. Need a decent O-line and connect on some vertical passes downfield. We may not have the 'best', but we'll lead the league in rushing attempts for sure.

ODU and LT should have solid run games.

If the O-line holds up, FAU might have a fearsome platoon of running backs this season.

Ito is a monster, though...

Ito is an amazing RB. But this is the year eveyone will finally get to see another amazing running - tez parks. This kid is a top notch running back and should finally get the carries he deserves.

I think Ray Lawry is the best back in CUSA. I think he has Jordan Howard like potential, and we will see him on Sundays next year.

RE: Will USM have the best RBs/ground attack this year in CUSA?
Ito was tied for 9th in CUSA in Rushing Yards Per Attempt 5.5 ypc (take away the 8 carries and 128 yards vs fcs and his avg is 5.1) & George Payne was 18th 4.8 ypc and that was with Nick Mullens at QB.

Unless S. Miss finds a QB that can pass the ball down field or hit the short pass and make good decisions. CUSA defenses will bring up a extra player into the box. Lets put this in context of the year before last and a wide open offense with Mullens having a great year. Ito avg 6.6 ypc

A good passing QB's make life easier for running backs. Good passing and decision making QB's makes the running game even better.

Whomever has the best oline will have best running game. I think everyone in the league has a guy or 3 they can hand the ball to that posses the ability to make big plays in CUSA but the best will be paired with the best line. Add in good qb play

Even as an understudy to Lawry with limited carries, Cox has shown flashes of Lawry-level greatness. If he is as good as I think he is, we're probably right up there with USM in terms of having that "1-2 punch" rushing capability. I give USM the edge because their third guy is a known quantity whereas I don't think we've had a third guy shine yet

Truly made me reconsider my entire attitude towards football. I especially liked the part where he analyzed the "veer" offense in terms of the evolution of blocking rules since 1970... we've all thought that, right? But who ever phrased their analysis in such a cogent fashion? And his analysis of the economics of realignment in the era of online TV? Just one more example of why Marshall is the academic jewel in the CUSA crown. Man, I love amateur football. It really brings out the best in people.

RE: Will USM have the best RBs/ground attack this year in CUSA?
Its interesting to me that Lawry gets overlooked a bit on this board. He averaged 6.3 yards per carry last year and missed some time with injuries (and played through in the early going) He averaged 5.9 last year and 7.1 as a true freshman. There is not a back in the league that I think is better than Lawry though Smith, Singletary and others are good as well. ODU also returns almost everything on the OL. Unless the QB is a trainwreck and teams can stack the box, Lawry should have a huge year.

The backup Cox averaged 5.7 yards per carry. He could start for most CUSA teams at RB and would probably be considered for one of the all CUSA teams. He has a unique blend of power and speed. (see the run after catch at the 30 sec. mark here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_78IrPYqiI) He also showed an ability to run away from ACC athletes vs. NC State. When he's been asked to be the lead back, he's performed really well.

We haven't seen much of the other running backs, but heard good things. Marriner is a transfer from UConn. Couple others have had little field time due to Cox/Lawry.

If another RB duo ends up being better than the ODU backs, I will be surprised.
