Very good guy to have as backup, but if Graham is your starter, you are in some serious trouble. Childers was the best player in spring ball, on tape obviously brings the most dynamics, I just don't see how it can be any other player at this point. He is the only one of the three with any appreciable upside.

You don't think Santa has upside? He ran well, and we didn't really see enough to know how well he can potentially pass. He only played in a couple games.

I was told that Santa looked very good today hit DJ deep for a score on the first play live today and hit both Blake and DJ deep other times !!

I think we can say that all the QB's will be improved (including Graham). It's also a fairly certain that no one knows the offense better than Ryan. Santa has only 6 quarters of experience but showed significant improvement; He also took the first team snaps in the spring so he must have showed something this spring. Childers has talent and potential but is a complete unknown. Both Santa and Childers have a ton of mistakes to make before they are good; but both appear to have bigger upsides. What this means to me...we have a bonafide QB battle on our hands; may the best man win. Certainly not a no-brainer

The fact that Graham throughout all his experience hasn't separated himself from the pack is telling enough that he's not the Starter. Let Santa and Childers battle it out. If we have to play Graham he'll be one the best #3 option in the country.

Let's also not forget Santa prob took a total of three snaps for the spring and fall of last year. After Hare, Graham and Maddie there was virtually no attention paid to him. Things should be a lot different with all three prepping to be starters.

You have to go with the best playmaker. That's why Maddie played well last year. Let the playmakers play.04-rock

That would be me then. My NIU flickerball team was awesome and I could sling the rock if I do say so myself.

I will do a pre-emptive cagey post and I know and admit "I have no right to have an opinion because I have not coached one day at the D1 level or have never coached a kid in my life", but if this QB decision is not a no-brainer, I completely give up on this coaching staff. It is obvious to anyone.

A no brainer? Starting a player with zero experience over a kid with two years of running this offense (18 games 8 starts); or a player with two wins in two games, that has showed solid potential and continuos improvement....If Childers leaves camp as the best player, he should get the start, but you make it sound like there is ample evidence already inplace to make this decision. Based on what? Two series in a controlled spring game scrimmage and a HS highlight film. I think Carey has a very tough decision to make that will likely take all of camp to answer.
[/quote]Djud. Good perspective. Sometimes this board goes to "11" without the necessary reason. This will be another tough year selecting a starter and reminds me of the season after Lynch left. Whoever gets the nod then has to face a very tough non-conference schedule to start. Hopefully that doesn't slow down his growth.

Does that mean they're going to move Childers to WR? 05-stirthepot

The translation based on prior posts ... I have no confidence in Carey making the "no-brainer " choice... Childers

RE: Quarterback this season
anybody who calls the dude none of us have ever seen play the obvious choice is a dope.

i truly don't believe it'll be Graham, but if i'm a betting man I would say 55-45 it's Santa over Childers right now.

I'll (hopefully) be at both practices this weekend.

With how shaky Santa looked, and slow to read things last year @ EMU, its a little disheartening to think he would be in the discussion. Is Childers that far behind?

I just don't trust Carey, at all. He will choose A) the upper classmen B) the player that will play it safe and not make turnovers, while at same time never making big plays. I don't think the best player is high on Carey's evaluation criteria.

How do we/you know who the "best player" is? Santa came in to the EMU game right before half with the team down by 21. No doubt he threw poorly; but he ran for nearly 100 yards, which likely had an impact on Huff's monster game. He also made a huge pass to KG in OT which led to the winning TD. The next week he is a dropped pass away from a 300 yard game, again leading the team to victory. Why is it disheartening that he apparently had a solid practice and may be ahead of Childers? Carey and his staff must win this year; collectively, they are going with the QB that gives them the best chance. They will choose Childers over Graham and Santa if he is "the best". It's ridiculous to draw any conclisuoons on either Santa or Childers based on the limited body of work. FYI, Hall of Famer Ryne Sandburg went 1-32 to start his Cub career; somebody saw some amazing potential in spite of his horrible start.

We do know Santa and Graham are not good passers. I don't think you can get by with that this year. Teams are going to be loading up to stop NIU's run. It's going to take a QB that can throw

7: looking forward to your assessment of the QB situation and the overall vibe of the team. Listening to some of the media reports, you get a sense there's more energy and drive this year. Bobby Jones seems to be standing out as the vocal leader this year.

In his only full game/start Santa is 13-23 for 258 yards; and has a perfectly thrown 50 yard pass that was dropped; so what did he do (or didn't do) that leads you to the conclusion that he can't throw?

Djud - his 1st game was so horrible it was hard to watch. KG to me will be remembered most for looking at balls thrown 10 yards short. He looked HORRIBLE as a passer last year.

Obviously that's not the case or he wouldn't be in the discussion. Lynch was 6/16 (38%) and a rating of 65 his first start. Graham was 9/12 with a rating of 194 his first real action. We know how they turned out. To judge a QB by his first ever college action seems like a bad idea to me.

That is indisputable, so we should conclude he sucks and can't throw based on one half in his 1st game as a freshman?; my question was based on his first complete game.

It's hard to play as bad as Santa did in that first game in this offense.

Graham has all that experience and he is still bad. He's bad at even the short passing game. If it weren't for KG last season our QBs (except Maddie) would have looked even worse.
