I don't see the problem. Rice is not conventional. Why not say so?

the target audience should be potential students that happen to be watching a football game where they might see this broadcast.

The student life aspect along with the quality of education and fellow student athlete(s) is what we have to offer.

I like it

It shows that students who have killer skills/ambitions and unexpected interests/activities are welcome at Rice.

I thought it was fine. Certainly not worthy of complaints about the commercial itself (I do understand complaints about "unconventional wisdom").

The first girl was one of my freshmen during my last O-Week as an advisor. Just started med school in Dallas and one of the most effervescent and nice people I have ever met.

They're labeled as "auto-generated", so it seems that somebody at Rice checked a setting to have YouTube extract the English text from the audio, translate it into Spanish, and use the Spanish as the base for captions. If you try to set it to English, it goes through an English > Spanish > English game of machine translation telephone that spits out gibberish. I suppose the account administrator has to go in and modify it to display the original extracted English. Maybe the extracted English text isn't accurate so they knew to disable it but didn't want to appear so obviously Anglo-centric? Or maybe they just didn't think of captions as necessary for English on YouTube but wanted to reach the Hispanic market. In any case, it needs to be fixed. If the original text isn't good, the auto-translation isn't, either, and, if the original is good, there's no reason to not show it for the deaf.

As I remember, unconventional is he opposite of conventional. I see no point in running an ad that says "Come to Rice! we are the same as everybody else!"

I'm OK with the message. I think it helps disprove some of the reputation that Rice has for being a bunch of ultra competitive academic overachievers to the detriment of their social life or having fun (if that makes sense). I asked our former CEO why his kids were considering Ivies instead of Rice, and he said that he thought Rice had a suicide problem (I told him I hadn't heard of that) due to grade pressures.

Yeah, definitely some virtue signalling going on, as somebody else mentioned (trying a bit too hard to prominently display the under-represented minorities first), but if that's our biggest problem we're doing ok.

Egad -- that was the rumor in the late 1970s!

Actually, early to mid '70s. When I was applying in 1973 - '74, the Yalee hand book that year claimed Rice was first or second in the country in campus suicides.

My nephew has a Bachelors in Economics and Performance Percussion, but from Oberlin. Shepherd wouldn't let him double major.

I've heard of Rice music students managing to get a dual degree, B. Mus. and B.A., but they had to to sneak it past their music advisors. The Shepherd School of Music officially doesn't allow it. Shepherd wants their students completely focused on music and only seem to view distribution and general university requirements as a technicality of being part of Rice, but the Registrar/rest of administration only care that the student completes the stated minimums for the two degrees. Students who do this have to come in with enough AP credit that they can use their few elective hours to complete B.A. requirements and hope that their advisors in Shepherd don't realize that they're taking enough advanced classes in their second degree to graduate with it or else that can be used as grounds to dismiss them from the music program. The School of Music doesn't realize what these students have done until they're walking across the stage at commencement by which point it's too late to revoke their B. Mus.

The School of Architecture also doesn't allow dual degrees*, but I never met an archi who was able to accomplish all of their work without putting in 60 hours per week. I don't see how it could be done. At the same time, there isn't much chance for a musi to get a B.S. They just require too many hours, even taking the few summer school classes they might get to sneak through around the school's expectation of summer performances.

*If I recall, one of the reasons Andrew Luck cited for going to Stanford instead of Rice was that they allowed him to get a B.A. in architecture while playing football. Rice only offers the architecture B.A. to students who were attempting in good faith to get the B. Arch. and decided late in their time at Rice that they don't want to pursue a career in architecture. It's supposed to be an out for those students to be able to graduate in four years instead of having to spend another three or four semesters working on a major from another school at Rice. The B. Arch. is so intensive that it's not open to double majors or varsity athletes, and admission to the B. Arch. program is prerequisite for finishing with the B.A. in architecture. I wouldn't be surprised if Shepherd has the same rule, but I've never heard of a top athlete who was also a top musician.
