Quote:Site of the University of Alabama Extension Center in Birmingham, undated. The former home was located at 2131 6th Avenue North and was acquired as part of a mortgage foreclosure. On September 14, 1936 the University of Alabama's Birmingham Extension Center opened in the renovated building. For the first term, 116 students were enrolled. The center remained at this location until 1954 when a new facility opened adjacent to the Medical Center. The old house was later demolished for a parking lot.

RE: 36
Back in this period of time, the AF of L would organize only skilled trade workers who had a particular skill. The CIO would organize workers according to industry regardless of skill or job. Plumbers, pipe fitters, carpenters, electricians, etc. joined the AF of L while auto workers (Walter Reuther), coal miners (John L. Lewis) and steel workers organized with the CIO. The two groups unified in the 1950s.
