Western Kentucky five-star center Mitchell Robinson is expected to transfer after cleaning out his dorm and leaving campus, according to a report from Scout’s Evan Daniels on Friday afternoon.
A Western Kentucky men's basketball spokesman could not be immediately reached for comment Friday and a message to Robinson was not immediately returned.
A 7-foot, 222-pound center and the eighth-ranked player in Scout’s final 2017 rankings – the highest-ranked signee in program history – Robinson arrived in Bowling Green on July 9 and attended summer school for two weeks prior to his departure, the report said.
Robinson participated in practice this week ahead of the Hilltoppers’ trip to Costa Rica for competition with international teams in August. Former Western Kentucky assistant coach Shammond Williams, Robinson’s godfather, resigned on July 3, per another report from Daniels.
A New Orleans native with a 7-foot-4 wingspan and 9-foot-3 standing reach, Robinson told the Courier-Journal’s Fletcher Page at USA Basketball training camp last month he was "ready to get in classes and start working with the team.”
"I think we're going to do some special things at Western Kentucky," Robinson said. "We've got a lot of nice people coming in, with recruits and transfers. It's a good thing for us. What we've put together, we could go really far in the NCAA. It should last a long time."
Robinson, also the program’s first McDonald’s All-American, was one of five freshmen in Bowling Green, along with four-star guard Josh Anderson, who was the Hilltoppers’ highest-ranked recruit in program history before the 7-foot center committed in November.
Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball and three-star guard Taveion Hollingsworth, three-star forward Marek Nelson and the 10th Region Player of the Year in Scott High’s Jake Ohmer are the remaining incoming freshman to commit to Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers also welcomed a slew of transfers, including Jordan Brangers, the third-ranked junior-college prospect, according to JUCOrecruiting.com.
