Not really. The NFL and AFL merged because they were more or less on equal footing.

What you're talking about is the merging of the NFL and USFL or WFL. Wouldn't have and didn't happen because the money isn't there.

I know as a G5 fan you don't want to see all this happen and I can appreciate that. If I was you, I wouldn't want it either. We're headed this way though.

I wouldn't worry too much though. You're going to end up with your own playoff and your own national championship within another subdivision. It's not as if G5 games won't be played anymore or won't be on TV anymore. You'll also probably get more home games out of it. And there should still be some opportunity to move up into the Power ranks if certain benchmarks are met.

Wasn't referring to past NFL realignment or expansion. I was simply referring to the NFL playoff model. Allow for more teams and wild cards in the playoff. NFL has 12 out of 32 teams in the playoff. A loss to a good team doesn't kill your season.

If the P5 change the rules to expand conference championships to include semi-finals, win-or-go-home football (ie, the unofficial playoff) could expand to 16 or more teams (depending on realignment - P4?), without significant changes to the CFP or bowl system.

In all seriousness, if the Power 5 forms their own subdivision then they'll have to have a set of metrics that guarantee upward mobility for anyone in the lower divisions. Same way schools leave FCS now and enter FBS.

ECU will have a shot. They just have to keep moving in the right direction. It's a nationally ranked school with good football attendance. A lot of G5s do not have that to their credit.

There was an a piece done in 2014 (https://sportspolitico.com/2014/08/14/d4p1/) regarding a Division IV. Essentially it would have 2 power conferences of 28 (B1G/SEC) and 4 non-power conferences of 10 (AAC/MWC/SWC/WAC). I am posting this here because what if instead of playing strictly "power" schools, the power schools played strictly schools from Division IV or FAS or whatever.

I reviewed this and made some adjustments. I made 1 power/non-power switch and 3 non-power/non-Division IV switches. I also merged the 4 non-power conferences into 2.

I don't believe divisions within each conference would because there simply are too many schools. This is how scheduling would work:

B1G/SEC (28 schools each) - 10 game conference schedule:
3 schools - play each year
4 schools - play 2 every other year
20 schools - play 5 every 4 years

ACC/PAC (20 schools each) - 9 game conference schedule:
3 schools - play each year
8 schools - play 4 every other year
8 schools - play 2 every 4 years
