The DSO scope is tied as the largest in the state with a scope operated by UNC-Greensboro, but the UNCG scope is much closer to the city lights of Chapel Hill and Burlington. They are do public viewing and have a nice set up but they have more light pollution concerns than App has to worry about.

The student lab on campus has a roll off roof like some stadiums now have, which is nice with weather changing so quickly in Boone and the hours saved setting scopes up.

I am a bit of a homer but the undergrad intro to Astronomy lab on top of Rankin must be one of the top 5 labs in the country between the number of scopes available, the type of scopes available, and all the technology available.

We might not have an observatory but we have a planetarium which is pretty neat and does free shows all the time. They even did a Pink Floyd laser rock show in there one time.

Dr. Caton used to have hair down to the small of his back. I am not sure if this is an improvement, but I'll cut him some slack given how much outreach he does with DSO. He also inspired me to make a bed-of-nails which I use to this day in my own classes. Being willing to be sandwiched between two layers of bed-of-nails deserves something in the "I'll cut him some slack" area I think.

We do monthly laser shows and rotate between Metallica, Pink Floyd with two different shows, Led Zep, U2 and the Beatles, along with a Halloween theme and a Winter Holiday show in December. I don't want to bring you off your GaSo high, but in most areas that are used to modern things like running water and electricity a laser show is fairly common.

We actually have three. One on campus, one about an hour away. And there's another one in California that has the world's highest angular resolution telescope https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHARA_arra. It's the one that found the first earth like planets outside of our solar system.

That is a nice facility.

The facility about an hour east does public viewing, but I have to ask what is expected of me at an observatory named Hard Labor Creek Observatory.

I go there to see the rings of Saturn and before I can look I have to bust up a boulder for road construction?

I had Dr. Caton for Astronomy my sophmore year and he was easily one of my favorite professors. A little eccentric at times, but always great. I remember the first night of labs (10:00pm-12:00am) when we got to use the telescopes. Looking through that scope and peering into a crater on the moon was such a mesmerizing thing. (full disclosure, I smoked before heading into lab )

He singled me out in front of the whole class one day and I thought I was in some deep ****. It turned out that I had scored a 100 on the first exam of the semester and it was the first one he had seen in quite some time.

Glad to see great things happening at App. I think I'll take my kids when Dark Sky is opened to the public.
